I think that if they had ever extended that runway, they would have had to take up a considerable amount of golf course. (I used to be a member there). At the Runway 01 end, the ground drops away down towards White House Lane, and then down hill all the way to the stream at the bottom, close to where they are planning the rail station, whilst the land on the other side of the stream goes up again, causing problems on approach from the Bramhope side should any extension have been that way. To extend the runway 19 direction would immediately take it on to the golf course, and the ground drops steeply on the other side of the fence from the airport, on to the course itself. In fact I would estimate that parts of the golf course immediately beyond the pan at the top of the old runway, are at least 50 feet below the runway level, before they rise steeply back up again on to fairly level land until beyond Bayton Lane (the road between Horsforth and Yeadon). It would therefore take a considerable amount of landfill to extend that runway across the dip in the course, and there would the small matter of Horsforth Golf Club being virtually destroyed in the process, with 5 or 6 holes completely wiped out and the course effectively split in half.

I have to confess that I too have had this thought before wawkrk, and it would have been a logical runway to extend, although there would have been a high cost and a lot of low flying aircraft over Rawdon village area. At least it would have been more into the prevailing wind, although still not where it should ideally be. The ideal is Runway 28, the wartime runway closed a few years ago, but again the only direction to extend would have destroyed Yeadon! In the end, they obviously opted for the least disruptive option, even though it leaves LBA with a regular cross wind problem.

It's good to see the airport putting on some advertising. 96.3 Radio Aire has a good following throughout much of West Yorkshire so it should prove a good choice for the airport. On a further note, I think Ryanair are advertising on Real Radio (Yorkshire)

Can you really call it pulling out? They only operated through the summer most years. I think 2009 was the last summer the airline operated into LBA. Somebody will correct me if I am wrong.

Noticed the arrivals and departure boards now show flights for much longer after they have happened so they do listen !!!! much better now.

Huddy, summer 2010 was the first summer for a long time that Air Malta didn't operate from LBA, nor did we have any IT charters to the island, mainly I suspect due to the commencement of the scheduled services to Malta by Ryanair, which are year round.

Summer scheduled flights normally commence on the last Sunday in March. This year it will be Sunday 28th
Jet2 spread the start of there summer services. Some Routes start in April while other services don't commence operation until the first or last week in May.

Summer Charter flights programme normally commence on the first day of May, Which this year will be Sunday, May 1st
Thomas Cook will operate some early summer service's to Las Palmas, Monastir, Antalya, Bodrum and Dalaman in April this year due to the Easter Holidays and the Royal Wedding thats taking place throughout that month

To summerise I would say don't chance it, especially if you have a mortgage to pay.

You will be more than aware of how turbulent the aviation industry is at the moment. You will probably find that nearly all of the jobs that are advertised now are temporary positions for the summer months only. Nearly all of the people employed now for the summer will cease employment at the end of October when the summer season draws to a close. If you were jobless I would say take a chance but I wouldn't risk it with a mortgage to pay. Some overtime is probable but not guaranteed. If you can fit some work in between your usual job then you might want to do that to gain some experience, perhaps some casual work might suit you whilst you finish your training at the Aviation Academy?

Not a lot of competition coming from DSA at the moment.
Only 2 departures showing today.

Just shows had bad things get over at Donny. At least LBA can hold its own in the winter nowa days with at least 30/40 scheduled flights.
is that in a day or in a week?

That's departures per day by the looks of it. It more than triples on summer days with around 120 departures on most days.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
