Thanks @White Heather, comprehensive update as usual.

Sounds like the bigger win on the recent night quota decision was to set a baseline ready for the new planning application. This applications is an absolute must in my eyes to get the airport to grow to its potential.

Really disappointing news on the airline/route front. Seems like we are going backwards losing airlines and routes, with only growth coming from Jet2 or increased frequency with Ryanair.

I have to admit I’ve seen very little advertising from the airport itself if the easyJet routes apart from their launch. Next to no mention of easyJet Holidays anywhere either. Very disappointing. I’ve been hugely disappointed with LBA on a marketing front personally and I’ve seen some very childish replies to comments which doesn’t reflect in a good light.

Fingers crossed there’s some new stuff in the pipeline or it’s going to be a slow few years at LBA outside Jet2 and Ryanair.

Once again, whilst the loss of 3 easyJet routes plus Sun Express and no interest from BA re a return is disappointing, and perhaps even frustrating, by putting a few things into context does mean things aren't as bad as they may initially seem:
DSA - still closed with any potential reopening getting further and further delayed
CVT - recently closed
MME - very stagnant and recent loss of European Cargo, even though that never really got going
All I am saying there is whilst yes some airports do better there are 3 examples above where things could be a lot worse. Then we have:
Jet2 - continually growing their LBA portfolio, albeit steadily.
Ryanair - maybe not new routes but frequency increases
KLM - vast majority of flights now E295
Aer Lingus/Emerald - retaining good frequency on BHD and DUB
So whilst it would be great to have more variety and perhaps not all the eggs in just a few baskets the current situation gives our incumbent airlines the opportunity to continue to go from strength to strength at LBA at a time when the industry as a whole is facing challenges, so all is far from doom and gloom at LBA but like @Speedbird1 says could things be perhaps even better with some extra marketing

Thanks as always @White Heather and whilst it might be disappointing to see the perceived momentum of easyjet seem to reverse it’s probably just a safety net for them. This might explain why they’ve shifted capacity around the network recently.

Ultimately the purchase of the controlling share by AENA is a positive regardless of current market conditions. It’s inappropriate to draw parallels with NCL which operates in a far more isolated market where it has more ultimate control.

Thanks for the update once again @White Heather . Shame about EasyJet & Sun Express. Let’s hope a Turkish replacement is sorted. Great to see more commitment from our resident based airline Jet2. Especially now it seems the is a plan to start retiring the 300’s Also looking forward to seeing more parts of REGEN2 coming online soon.

Just out of interest was anything said about Emerald’s slot requests into the 3x London Airports?

Lots of suggestions elsewhere that these slot requests by Emerald are just using LBA as the destination to mask their true plans/destination(s). That said I agree @lbaspotter it would be good to know if there is anything in it for LBA although some commercial confidentiality will surely be at play here regardless

My frustration stems primarily from seeing how much growth NCL is currently experiencing compared to that at LBA
It's worth looking at the bigger picture. The NCL current surge is heavily reliant on Ryanair basing an extra aircraft and as we all know, Ryanair can pull that capacity away overnight if the yields dip. Don't forget how quickly easyJet pulled its previous base there the moment things got tough, which strongly suggests the yields up north aren't always as lucrative as the raw passenger numbers might make people think.

LBA can play a completely different long game. We are the absolute heart of Jet2, and their massive longer term commitment to a full A321neo operation here gives us guaranteed, long-term structural growth that NCL just doesn't have. Plus, LBA sits in the middle of a massive, resilient West Yorkshire catchment area, whereas NCL is constantly squeezed by Edinburgh to the north and Teesside to the south.

NCL might be having a flashy low-cost summer, but once our terminal regeneration unlocks LBA's capacity constraints, our growth is going to be far more permanent and secure. Patience will definitely pay off here.

I don’t think it’s fair to compare NCL with LBA but I do understand @SierraHotel.

I’m not aware of any commitment to a full A321 base from Jet2 either. Maybe I missed something?

I know we pin a lot of hope on the terminal regeneration but if airlines can’t make routes like Antalya, Malaga and Palma work against Jet2 and Ryanair, it’s going to be tough to ever convince others to operate those routes again. Let’s hope there’s a few rabbits in the hat.

Just double checked LBA’s socials and there’s next to no mention of easyJet or easyJet Holidays on there barring one post in Feb. There’s no adverts in and around the city. How are the general public meant to know about these flights? Personally think they’ve massively dropped the ball on this.

No, nothing at all about Emerald. That could of course be a significant and deliberate omission, or just 'nothing to report'. They were the only regular LBA airline he didn't mention.

I know you posted about the REGEN but are you able to elaborate on how things are progressing now?

Regards the Jet2 A321’s I have read LBA could be the last base to start receiving them. So in theory it could be a very long time before LBA is fully converted to Airbus operations

LBA is the place Jet2 planes go to die! it’s s currently last base to operate the Boeing 737-300’s and it could be potentially the last base for the Boeing 737-800’s.

Heather great update, but I like everyone else feel deflated/disappointed by the lack on Route & Airline updates.

Sun Express for one I am shocked at. (maybe someone should tell TUI as it is on sale for next year). EMA/LPL both had the chop (EMA had it before they even started). I'm not sure what position Sun Express are in but I don't think it is great.

easyJet chopping AGP/PMI if they can not make them work, is not very encouraging going forward. GVA ironically NQY has had a short 6 week (better timed) GVA service announced.

BA could absolutely fill a A320 night stop.

There will become a point I guess where the number of A21Ns will far outweigh the B738s so it then becomes a matter for the LS bean counters to decide how long it's sensible to persist with a mixed fleet. Some 738s are as old as the 733s but the newer 738s are what say 10 years old so would suggest there is at least 10 years life in them if Jet2 still want to be operating a mixed fleet at that point. But they may have to consider A21Ns at LBA sooner if they want to continue to grow pax numbers. Or perhaps the 3 x A321 CEOs may come to LBA to die in the interim as they seem happy to operate those from here as back up

Absolutely correct @752.

If they can’t make these routes work then a base won’t be happening. GVA is particularly frustrating to only see them start small, marginal markets like Newquay and Isle of Man. To be honest, I maybe been negative but I can’t see Barcelona and Paris lasting too much longer either on this basis.

Here is a summary of today's ACC. I have 4 pages of A4 notes, so this is very much a summary, or I will still be typing on this phone at midnight.

* Airspace Change Programme

LBA has finally got past stage 2 and has now started on phase 3. They are buying in the services of expert consultants 'Trax' at a cost of 750k to wade through the CAA process. Various options will now be whittled down to the final few then subjected to public consultation. Up to 6000 responses are likely. This will be mid to late 2027 with all phase 3 completion early 2028.

* Bus transfers/ Aircraft stand towing

A query was raised as to why aircraft are being moved off stand to remote stands after unloading and vice versa. This is to maximise the use of stands within walking distance of the terminal as both passengers and airlines prefer that. Vince Hodder stated that the day before the terminal extension opened, there were 92 bus transfers in 24 hours. The following day, using current procedures, there were just 6. He confirmed the transfer buses were operated by the airport and its staff, not by ground handling teams.

* LBA Regen

The red crane on site is removing old HVAC equpment and lifting new platforms and HVAC machinery etc into place.

Two new double size elevator pits have been created ready for the installation in due course.

The new World Duty Free area is now being fitted out by WDFs own contractors. Started 1st June. It us due to open Sept 2026.

The old Saltaire Bar is now completely removed. The new Montys Bar and Starbucks will go here.

Latest opening dates

Starbucks. July 2026
WH Smith. TBC
World Duty Free. Sept 2026
Montys Bar. .Sept 2026
Other retail units. May 2027
2nd WH Smith. June 2027
Upper Crust. May 2027
Juniper Bar. June 2027
New CSZ. Sept 2026

Domestic Baggage. Aug 2027
Int baggage comp. Sept 2027

* Aviation Report, Declan Maguire

Forecast pax throughput 2026/7 is 4.59m.
This is seen as good progress but less than previously expected due to the loss of some carriers and routes due to instability caused by rising aviation fuel prices and the impact on bookings.

Sun Express withdrew and consolidated via a reduced programme ex MAN due to fuel costs and their need to cut costs. I asked if this was a temporary suspension and if they would be back. Despite LBA having a large untapped market to Turkiye the current situation is that Sun Express will NOT be returning in the forseeable. As a result Declan is now holding discussions with other carriers. Think Hull City shirt sponsors.

Wizz Air and Easyjet were both said to be more exposed to the impact of the middle east war as theiy had not hedged fuel costs as far ahead aa Jet2 or Ryanair. Wizz have already made cuts at BHX and GLA and are considering their stategy out of the UK relative to Wizz Air Hungary and Malta. Apparently Wizz UK, based at LTN, are unlikely to be impacted. LBA are in regular discussions with them with a view to ensuring our routes are not lost but this is about UK ops generally.

Easyjet have also taken action to remove marginal routes at non base airports including Leeds. Geneva will not operate this winter and both PMI and AGP are axed. The loadings were acceptable but this is a cost saving measure. However, it was stated that in the longer term, there are still 'plans' for Easyjet at LBA. Until then, they will continue operating Belfast, Paris and Barcelona.

Ryanair seat capacity is up 9 5% on last year.

Jet2 new routes announced (see Jet2 thread)

KLM doing really well with the newly introduced E295 services and LBA will seek to have additional rotations in future.

TUi doing well with their flights to Palma, Corfu and Dubrovnik to connect with cruises.

Aurigny doing well.

Not mentioned but presume Aer Lingus/Emerald also doing well.

BA not interested in operating to LHR. They are not convinced the loadings on an A320 would justify it (they are phasing out the A319s)

Admitted this winter could prove to be a difficult time as many airlines reduce capacity due to rising ticket costs due to high aviation fuel costs.

* Fuel availability

No shortages for next month. Beyond that there is no clear picture, but nothing is known currently to suggest there will be any shortages irrespective of what goes on in the Strait of Hormuz. UK refineries have increased jet fuel refining from 10% to 30% of output, whilst greater imports are incoming, but supply and demand dictates high prices, translating to reduced demand, and airlines consolidating to reduce costs.

Business Update. Vince Hodder

Vince confirmed the May outcome relating to the night movement CLEUDs but that G***A have indicated an intention to seek a Judicial Review. They have until midnight today to do so and if so their case is against LCC.

The big news however is that if they do not seek the JR, LBA will be submitting a Planning Application to LCC by the end of July, with a view to sorting out the remaining night issues, ie:
- night time hours seeking 2330-0600
- a shift away from movement limits to average noise exposure with associated noise insulation schemes.

Both are in accordance with Government guidance.

If G***A do seek a JR, the planning application will be delayed until the outcome is known as it is based on the planning approval as confirmed by the CLEUD.

* Police

West Yorkshire Police are seeking to increase their charges by circa £1m with 24/7 cover and a resident police inspector, despite LBA being closed overnight in winter. Their claim is based on published charges imposed by LBA on non regular airlines, which are not charged to the airlines using LBA regularly. LBA are seeking discussions but these requests are being refused. LBA has therefore referred this dispute, which started in 2024, to the Dept for Transport. Their report on the issue is overdue. This has not, and will not, impact on policing at LBA.

* AENA

AENA completed the acquisition of 51% of LBA on 7th May. A new Board of Directors has been set up consisting of 5 x AENA, 2 x LBA and 2 x Infrabridge Capital. AENA said to be very good to work with and very focussed on LBA achieving all targets, both aviation and environmental. The first board meeting was yesterday, in London.

* Fire Evacuations

The new system is now operational and when a call point is activated, it is supposed to allow a 6 minute period to investigate and decide if a full evacuation is needed. Due to a programming issue this delay has not happened and a full evacuation was triggered 4 times in a week after call points were activated. The programming fault has, they are told, been identified and will be rectified. The call points were activated 3 times by passengers (not necessarily with malicious intent) and once by a contractor.

* Security Screening queues

The average queue time this summer is 10 minutes. Longer queues have only occurred as a result of equipment failures or other things going wrong.

* Airside seating.

More seating has recently been added and there will be more as and when works complete in the intended seating areas.

Thats all.
As ever, many thanks for the excellent update. It appears from their website today that GALBA has decided NOT to pursue a claim for a judicial review regarding the CLEUD.

Well that is another bit of good news.

I am hopeful AENA have positive things up there sleeve for LBA. in the meantime I suggest we all play our part and book flights from LBA and spend where possible (and sensibly allows) in the car parks/fast track/terminal.

As others have posted, we could be in alot worse scenarios also

I hope we get 321's sooner than that. The airport say they have stopped building new stands on the basis that they will meet paasenger projections without them- but this is predicated upon the operation of larger aircraft.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
