Bristol: TUI Airways Route News & Base Updates

Northerly route today for the Cancun. G-TUIB, our old friend Alfie the first B787 to visit BRS in 2016 when on a courtesy visit, is currently heading towards north-east Canada.

Most of Tom aircraft went northern route today,plus quite a few other airlines as well. I suppose weather would be the biggest factor which route tey take. KMS wise there is very little difference flying northern route or southern routes.Its all to do with the curvature of planet earth.

Tomorrow's inbound TOM645 due 0745 is showing a 90-minute delay. A check with FR24 shows the outbound TOM644 went via East Midlands this morning, presumably for a fuel top-up. There haven't been many instances of fuel stops this summer on the Cancun.

I departed on yesterday mornings Edinburgh flight (07:15), and can confirm a very wet BRS with very heavy rain (you’ve never seen an A319 loaded so quickly as the passengers tried to get from the bus and up into the aircraft as fast as possible). This could be the reason that the TOM644 went via EMA for a fuel stop.

Off topic - BRS was again fantastic yesterday when passing through it. Easy check-in (no pun intended), fast and friendly security and BRS now has a great range of food/drink outlets as well as shops. I heard it described by a passenger onboard my flight as a mini Terminal 5 - which I thought wasn't a bad thing at all!

Anyway, sorry for the thread drift there, back to TUI!

It might well be the article is not fully accurate and hopefully BRS will see an increase in capacity.
TCX didn’t have a base at DSA, yet the article says capacity is being increased there....
Out of TUIs top 10 bases, the article didn’t mention LGW, BRS, EMA, CWL and STN all of which were TCX bases.... a hastily written article maybe?

MAN, BHX, GLA and NCL are all Jet2 bases so part of the thinking might be that because Jet2 seems to be reacting significantly to the TCX void TUI ought to react themselves at Jet2 airports to prevent Jet2 grabbing the lion's share of the former TCX passengers.

The snag with that theory is that East Midlands is also a Jet2 base and was a TCX base and is not included whereas, as Severn has pointed out, Doncaster-Sheffield was not a TCX base, neither is it a Jet2 base.

One would have thought that TUI would be eyeing some of the half million TCX passenger journeys through BRS. That's half as many again as NCL's lost TCX travellers.

Given the many comfortably-off leisure travellers in the BRS catchment - one of the reasons Barbara Cassani said that Go went to BRS in the first place - it seems odd that no-one as yet has put their hat in the ring to grab some of them.

Hopefully it will be a case of this being phase one and increases for Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter will come later.

With the impending increases to northern uk airports I thought I would have a brief look at brs summer 2020. I’ve noticed that the Monday Gran Canaria is no longer stated to be on the Dreamliner whilst all the others planned are. However I cannot see a replacement route yet. Also Enfidha which was planned as a all day affair (w pattern elsewhere ) is now an early morning dep allowing an afternoon slot yet to be filled.

I think the Monday LPA is still on the 787, but the afternoon IBZ moves to the morning making 5x departures plus a 787 departure...
I'm sure there will be lots of changes over the coming months from all bases.

I wondered about the plan to have the 787 at BRS all week given the TCX situation and TUI's plan to create two million more seats next summer (I presume this means one million outbound plus the reciprocal inbound). As has been said there will doubtless be lots of changes across the entire TUI system next summer compared with the programme originally published.

I think that Severn has emphasised this point before but the TUI statement on its website reads, "Sticking with its commitment of offering more flexibility and choice for its customers, TUI will offer more 7, 10, 11 and 14 night durations and even more flying from popular airports including Manchester, Doncaster Sheffield, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow to its unrivalled range of hotels."

Although the airports mentioned don't include any in the south of the UK the TUI statement uses the word 'including' not solely.

They're supposed to be receiving 2 more 787 9s this year so that should help.

Still early days yet for final programs from airports. I would think still a lot of chopping and changing with routes and type of aircraft used.We must not forget the 737 max issue which caused problems for tui this year. If the max is still grounded for next summer then unless tui can get another extension of the 757 ,if they cant then that will be another situation for tui to get sorted.So all in all I can still see a lot of changes in one way or another.No British airline have not got spare capacity to cover the TC programme they had.

The 2x new B787s have already been planned to be based at LGW and MAN, 1x at each.
LGW will then require 6x B787s to be based and 4x will be required at MAN (one of which will operate from DSA 2x days a week). Both bases see the aircraft operate a mix of long and short haul.
1x aircraft will be based at BRS, operating long and short haul,
1x aircraft will be based at BHX, operating only long haul,
and 1x aircraft will be shared between NCL, GLA and BHX operating long haul flights.
1x aircraft (usually a B787-9) is then kept as a operational spare.
Given the TCX situation this may all now change, but currently this is how the timetable stands.

There is a rumour that BHX will get a short haul 787 so it will be interesting to see where they get that from.

I don't if this is what RedFlyer is alluding to but it looks like Orlando will be 2 weekly with flights on Mondays and Thursdays from May to October.

Have you had a chance to see if anything has been reduced to allow for these increases? Furthermore, does the Monday Florida replace the two B 787 short-hauls (Las Palmas and Burgas) originally planned for Mondays or is it in addition?

I wonder if all this means an additional TUI aircraft or more third-party carriers.
