Discussions relating to Liverpool Airport
Very interesting addition, very surprising too I must say. Strange that it’s leaked though, but it’s in booking engine so… Good to see, will be a great base I’m sure.

Destinations are
Bourgas
Ibiza
Mallorca
Menorca
Alicante
Paphos
Fuertenventura
Tenerife
Lanzarote
Gran Canaria
Corfu
Heraklion
Kos
Rhodes
Zante
Faro
Madeira
Antalya
Bodrum
Dalaman

Very quiet in winter then. Canaries, Antalya and Paphos not full season, Alicante and Malaga. Be interesting to see how they go up against EasyJet in the ski market.

Pretty standard for Jet2, very seasonal, I think the airport operator will have given lots of terminal space for the red signage. Interesting to see what easyjet do now given their growth trajectory in MAN. Perhaps a LBA easyjet base is on the cards 🤔

There a number of unserved destinations there which is good to see. They have been talking to Liverpool for a long time, must have reached an acceptable deal.

Good to see Zante back, long established route of Easyjet and Direct Holidays before them. Then out of the blue EZY decides not to offer it.

Being a frequent traveller through Liverpool, Im wondering which stands Jet2 will use ? In fact I dont know how this normally works, do airlines get allocated them, both Ryanair and Easyjet have there areas they usually park. Im not sure how ' in stone ' this is. The aircraft type looks tobe 737-800s.

@Silvercity its usually down to the airport operations to do stand allocations. All down to the gates they may use. Your right in respect there is probably usually a certain stand or two that are always used by the resident carriers.

Afternoon flights will be different as based aircraft for a Ryanair/EasyJet will be away whilst a Jet2 is on the ground in Liverpool and vice versa.

I’m not familiar with Liverpool airport but if there is a set 4 stands available every night and there’s gates nearby I would be inclined to say that they’ll get that.

Knowing we were launching post eurovision I quite liked reading all the naysayers comments this past few weeks.

Mainly the P Site but, also a few on here… there seems to be an awful lot of armchair experts who seemingly know relatively little when it comes to airline economics.

It will be great to see Jet2 in LPL… the futures bright and the base will grow.

Fair enough, but when this info comes from the horses mouth who is to deny that until something is officially announced? Accepted that they will not divulge information to those who have no need to know until it’s official. If you’ve been around long enough you will know how long LPL have been dangling the carrot only to be rebuffed for reasons outlined previously.. The reasons for not believing it was LPL were directly lifted from a recent event hosted by the guy who knows everything there is to know about ‘airline economics’.

I am not in the curry club, if I was I wouldn’t be posting business secrets on a forum.

Fair play albeit one thing, if you check my original post I released nothing official simply hearsay jet2 were looking at the possibility of expanding and a potential future base.

I simply sowed the seed for everyone else to guess. SOU, LPL, MME etc…

You cannot be naive just because SH says one thing, it’s political he’s not going to spill his guts because a reporter he has a good rapport with is asking the questions. I’ve been around long enough to know the in’s and out’s and given many on here a nudge preceding previous announcements.

Finally I’ll add there’s nothing personal here, i simply feel sometimes the rather vocal lot on the other site shut down a lot of conversations based on nothing but their lacklustre knowledge or information when quite a number of times they are in fact very wrong about most things and should stick to taking photographs at the side of 23L.

I personally didn't see it or any future base as I couldn't see where on earth the aircraft were coming from. Acting as a relief/overflow makes sense for Manchester for me it was where on earth are they getting AC. Additional unit in Belfast, Bristol, Scotland?!, Leeds 737-300 replacement(s)?, additional 2 in Stansted which will become furniture imo I just couldn't see it - clearly no one is privy to information that they are at top level.

My post was not meant to be accusatory at all, nor was I suggesting you shared company secrets. The information I was alluding to was not to some external reporter, this was very much internal with only internal people there, and it was blankly shut down when in previous personal experience this has not been the case (without going into specifics). So something has changed in the last couple of months. Perhaps it’s the ability to secure a seemingly endless number of midlife NG’s for a start. I also believe easyjet base may not long be for LPL for various reasons which may have prompted an opportunistic response from Jet2 and from LPL owners. They have been trying to tempt Jet2 for many years, I believe around ten years ago they almost did go in but something (body?) put a stop to it. That is second hand info.

SOU has been looked at in some capacity in the past - no idea of the situation now as I’m not privy to this and nor do I wish to be. Performance will always be an issue.

I do think this news is excellent and having flown from Liverpool myself I would do so over MAN any day.

I also agree re. The other forum. But that’s the enjoyment of the debate, you win some you lose some but most importantly you learn some too. There were a lot of shocked people when this news was released this morning, as I assume you will know.

They have recently managed to acquire some midlife’s. I do not believe this is to be as an overspill for MAN, it’s simply a natural growth strategy with Liverpool being the largest unserved city region in the U.K. now. Next largest unserved city region with an airport(s) is the BOH/SOU area, but there may be a keenness to get into LGW at some point.

No no I didn't take it as an aim at me. It was my opinion as to why LPL was a shock. But like you say they must have the finger of the pulse in terms of what's coming up. I suspect a couple other airlines may go under this next year like flyr.

As for easyJet in LPL. They offer something Jet2 done - the connection to Belfast & Isle of Man flights are
just as busy as for example London - Dubai/New York. If easyJet pulled Liverpool would be lucky to have those flights replaced. Jet2 wouldn't and I don't think Ryanair would have the same pull as easyJet on Belfast and Isle of Man flights.

Runway isn't the best. However I'm reading easyJet will be the ones to move first on this to protect and fight off Jet2. Jet2 would probably rather have London Gatwick providing they can get their dual operations up and running. Mind you they are fighting the green cult. And they are just narrow minded bigots.

When I say overspill what I mean is I'll set the example. 2 extra aircraft. They can only base 1 in Manchester but want to add to other routes (Palma etc). They also want to add another destination or two and also increase frequencies to other more niche routes. Do they give it to Alicante/ Palma/ Dalaman/Canaries/? Or add frequencies nicher routes and new routes whilst sending the Alicante/Palma etc stuff over to Liverpool?

Bear in mind - Manchester to Palma is like 30 times weekly. Manchester Tenerife 15 weekly.

No it wasn’t a response to yourself, just more general.

With regards Easyjet and LPL, it appears to have stagnated a bit. Not suggesting they will pull out completely but they may move towards more use of outstationed aircraft to service the more popular routes. They pulled out of NCL following the fallout of Covid, have retreated back to LTN from STN and have all but abandoned SEN. It’s strange they maintain a presence at LPL with the size of their operation at MAN. At the risk of being shot down for knowledge on aviation economics, it really does have an impact when you are competing with yourself locally. Jet2 are far more U.K. centric, easyjet have a wider European network to consider. Is it really sustainable to have two bases next to each other in the face of increased competition from the number one tour operator? Particularly when there are large parts of the U.K. that do not have an easyjet base within an hour.. BHX would make more sense for them now, as would LBA if capacity can be increased to handle them comfortably.

Still think SOU is a no go for Jet2 unless they are happy to accept the performance limitations, they do this at some destination airports but that’s cos they have to.

Quite so, well said.

I have to say sadly their is more than a little anti- Liverpool bias over on the P site, it's quite extraordinary at times.

Easyjet have not always worked in favour for their Liverpool base. Suddenly stopping long established and busy routes ( Berlin for example ) personally it's about time there was a bit more competition, they and FR have had it all their way for for too long. If they choose to react in a negative way, they are really cutting off their nose to spite their face. Liverpool to Belfast is an extremely busy route, they will still want that im sure.

I think that’s quite unfair.

A lot of the people championing LPL on there (and elsewhere) also believe that LPL should have a load of long-haul destinations on its departure boards. Airline economics indeed.

Whenever there is a rumour of a jet2 base, literally every airport is sold as a possible on there. In many cases those people got lucky with their guess quite frankly, obviously the source on here was correct but that is not the point here as most of the other posts were guesses based on simply the fact that the airport wasn’t served by Jet2 (which is correct) and that the market is large (also correct), but there are other large markets that Jet2 are going to try to get into in the next couple of years.

I’ll say it again, there are a lot of people on the coal face that were caught by complete surprise by this news. STN, BHX and BRS were not a surprise, nor was GLA when it was announced. It is great news, and Jet2 Liverpool has always had a ring to it but they have remained away from LPL for many years now for reasons that I and others have outlined so it is not in anyway based on misinformed opinion or lack of understanding of ‘airline economics’.

Truth is LPL is and always will be overshadowed by MAN due very much to the fact that it is a major airport, granted it is in the largest aviation market in the U.K. outside of London, but still the actual catchment area for MAN is the entire M62 corridor and that provides the critical mass required to sustain a wide range of global destinations.

What is clear now for Jet2 is that they are preparing to solidify their position as the leading U.K. tour operator, it is excellent news for Liverpool and excellent news for Jet2. It may, however come at a cost of other services from LPL.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours

Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
