I have long been a supporter of the idea that the airport would be of more use in a different location for many, many reasons however, as Seasider rightly points out, putting it in Church Fenton instantly makes Manchester a far more attractive proposal. Quite aside from the fact that residents of Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax etc would up sticks and head West, an airport here would do little to attract new customers from other populations centres.

For what it is worth, I believe the ideal location would be next to Junction 45 of the M1, opposite Temple Newsham. The land is currently, mostly, a landfill which could be used to generate an amount of energy. The road from Junction 45 into Leeds is massively underutilised, as is the junction itself. The location would sit next to the Leeds - Sheffield/Nottingham railway line offering new links with other population centres as well as being easily accessible by car.

An airport in this location with the correct infrastructure would attract routes such as Dubai etc and offer a viable and attractive alternative to the people of Sheffield, who would then have the choice of EMA, MAN and the new LBA. Furthermore, such a site would provide the people of York and Hull with much faster access (journey time improvements of roughly 30mins). The move East would be mitigated by the improved access provided by road and rail with journey times from the centre of Bradford (10mins) and Huddersfield (30mins) improving over the current situation through use of the M606/M62. Additionally, the journey to the business centre of Leeds would be faster which, I am sure, would further enforce the business routes that are, presently, better than LPL, EMA, HUY, DSA. Such a move would, probably, lead to the closure of DSA altogether and there would be a case to divert European development fund monies (from which DSA benefits) to the new project.

Importantly, though this area does suffer, to a small extent, with early morning mist at certain times of the year due to the local geography, it is not subject to the prevailing weather in the same way as the current site. A runway length of at least 2,750m is possible with a landing distance of at least 2,400m (based on an Eastern approach over Beeston) with full ILS capability and a West/South-West - East/North-East orientation. If departure routes were set accordingly, the number of residential areas overflown on both Departure and Arrival would be significantly less than at present due to a far lower population density in South Leeds.

I will concede that there are negatives to such a plan; the wetlands and local wildlife would be particularly problematic and the speed of access for a large proportion of Leeds and Bradford residents - as well as those from other towns such as Keighley/Skipton/Ilkley/Harrogate etc - would be adversely affected. However, an airport in this location would still be more attractive than the trip to Manchester, especially if the new airport were to offer good rail links to the aforementioned towns and attract a number of new routes. I see it as the only real option for a new airport because other locations that I can think of simply do not provide any benefit to the population over the current site.

Still, that is total pie in the sky because, as Aviador rightly points out, it will never happen. There is little political will for it to happen (other than the typically vote grabbing nonsense that has already been mentioned) and no available cash to build it (unless, perhaps, a Russian oligarch has some spare change). There is then the question of the current site and owners. How exactly would all that be sorted out? No. A full redevelopment of LBA would cost half as much and provide enough benefits to grow the airport in line with - or slightly ahead of - other regional airports. If I am wrong and there is indeed political will for this to happen, the provision of a dedicated link road and rail line would be the most important contribution they could make.

Certainly, if there is now political pressure for LBA to grow, the local government ought to look at the lack of investment and insufficient forward planning during the time they were in charge as a current stumbling block. A close relationship between the incumbents and local government is necessary for sustained future growth.

Good comments everyone. Lots of angles covered. Catchment area still seems to come into the fray regularly. Why do people fly from Manchester?? because that is where you can get direct flights to so many more destinations than the likes of LBA, LPL and even NCL.

Would anyone generally class Newcastle in the catchment area for Manchester? The reason I ask is that a few weeks ago I got a train home from Newcastle. It was nearly full from Newcastle, and I have to say that a large contingent were heading to Manchester Airport (I had a look at various baggage tags on their cases). Now that’s with a local airport that carries over 4 million passengers a year with better and more frequent links to European Hubs. So, what chance do we have unless our region gets a major boost to infrastructure that can attract a bigger spread of destinations.

I don’t really mind how they achieve this, whether by major improvements at LBA, or a new regional airport somewhere else. I must admit overall I tend to agree with White Heather that an airport just down the Aire Valley would be the preferable option. Good rail links now, but could be improved with some services running to Bradford etc. Leeds City would be only 7-8 minutes away by rail. Local bus services around Leeds, particularly the Wakefield and Castleford routes could also serve a new airport, as could the NGT (if it ever happens!!) which could be extended a short distance from Stourton.

If the powers that be had the same ambition that they clearly have over the hill, maybe we could get a transport system over this side of the hill that we could be proud of.

According to the 2012 CAA passenger survey 371,000 of MAN's passengers had origins/destinations in the North East.

3.885 million were from Yorkshire and the Humber, 1.081 million from the West Midlands, 773,000 from Wales, 704,000 from East Midlands and 341,000 from Scotland.

On my commutes home from work I have notice a large concrete cylinder opposite the car parks at LBA which is before the travel lodge on the way towards Horsforth. It is filled with water and the level fluctuates. Is this storage for the rain water run off from the runway at LBA and is it slowly released into Carlton beck to prevent flooding?

There is an unused 3000 metre runway at Elvington, why not put that in the mix, 50+ years ago knew every yard as it was in those days aero modelling. having lived in Pockington for many years the local rail lines pre Beeching are still in place, M62 and M1 close by. Issues of military flying, but those can be changed. Prison labour on hand too.
As said all pie in the sky, certainly no new airport in this region will open in my life time.
If HS2 does happen likely to route through Woodlesford not Church Fenton, wakefield coincil just voted against the latest plan.
Changing subject, having tried to support LBA by showing airports such as malaga etc are far worse, glad to see this survey supports my issues with Malaga. http://travel.aol.co.uk/2014/01/30/mala ... d%3D240179

Elvington would be useless as an airport for Yorkshire. It is simply too far from the population - although Tarn Spotter I suspect you mentioned this very much tongue in cheek! The Pole, the cylinder you refer to is the recently installed water run off from the airfield, that Bridgepoint have had to install at some considerable cost, in order to comply with the ever more stringent regulations. This is one of those 'improvements' that cost a lot but are generally ignored by those who claim that there is insufficient investment. I believe that these tanks are able to separate the chemical pollution within the water (probably kerosene Jet fuel) preventing pollution of the water courses. Hope that helps

tarn spotter
whats your problem with Malaga airport? we have been flying into agp for 30years this year and don't have any problems.

Firstly the pointless walking, last March we were allowed T2 arrival straight to T2 baggage. Subsequently we had to do, T2, T3 and then T2 baggage, when I asked why, they wont man T2 passport controls, rather we walk.
T1 booking in then walking to T3 security and then back to T2 departure is crazy, accept jet2 bagged great booking gates next to T3 security, but we also fly domestic during our stay and the walking gets too me, when not needed.
Removing the tables behind the x-ray machines as joke, no seats to sit on to take off my shoes, impossible to drop off/collect, I could go on, thankfully, I have the great LBA to return too.
White Heather, you saw through my comments on Elvington !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Out of existing airfields Elvington has got to be the best option with it's 3000m runway pointing in the right direction. I really like the idea of Elvington my only concern is it's just a little far out from the main conurbations of West Yorkshire. The A64 would need upgrading to Motorway standard (does anyway) with a spur to the airport.

Yes,

It was built last year. I'm not sure if it's designed to filter the water to some extent as well as release it at a slower rate into the beck. The annoying thing is it's right where the railway line is on the old Masterplan, so I think it's safe to say that's scrubbed now!

It’s not often that something really hacks me off, but the YEP certainly managed to do it on Friday. The big article about the airport on Friday was living in the past. What really hacked me off was the 3 photos they chose to use.

First, was an old 1960’2/70’s shot showing old cars and scaffolding round the building

Second was an old shot looking at the apron with a BA Cityflyer J41 on 32 and what was probably a F70 parked on stand

Third...yes you guessed it...the BA Tristar hanging off the end!!!
Who pays these people????

All designed no doubt to undermine LBA. That seems to be the YEP's favourite past-time these days. Gone are the days when our local newspaper championed LBA and its development. They will see the campaign for a new airport as a chance to generate story after story, and it won't suit them to show the 'new improved' LBA. The worse they can make it look the better.

Shame on the YEP :bomb:

On the topic of a new airport. It needs one for the future 25+ years away, will we get one I highly doubt it...

I applaud the council for having foresight seriously but right now what the city needs is a full orbital dual carriageway/motorway and this dam super tram/trolly bus sorting and built.

On yes, and I forgot to mention that the article also stated that the airport is 5,682 ft above sea level. Higher than Snowdon!!!

I left the cafe on Sunday at 16:00 there were no less than 20 aircraft on stand. Looked pretty impressive. Shame the YEP weren't there to take a snap!!

Nice to see that both KLM and Monarch Airlines/Cosmos Holidays are advertising there flights and services from Leeds/Bradford on the big screens at the Leeds Trinity Center.
Meanwhile whilst in town yesterday I noticed some new British Airways advertisements on the side of bus shelters and on Yorkshire Tiger buses advertising the Leeds/Bradford - London Heathrow (T5) route and the fact you can connect to over 70 worldwide destinations.

I think it’s fair to say that the South West has been taking an even battering than the England cricket team recently. With the main line shut at Dawlish, should the powers that be start thinking about some alternatives, even on an emergency temporary basis. I am thinking on the lines of getting some flights running to Newquay. Cornwall is as near as damn it cut off as things stand. It would be nice to see Jet2 doing a twice daily service with one of the many spare 737’s that are hanging around at LBA (and no doubt MAN).

Not just the main line.. the only line! Seems a somewhat short sighted decision to close the other route in the 60s. And Plymouth airport only closed a few years back too (taking with it the flights to/from Leeds from the southwest).

[textarea]Overgate Hospice named among charities to get support from Leeds Bradford Airport

The Elland hospice is one of five good causes to be supported by Leeds Bradford Airport this year

A hospice at Elland is flying high after being named by Leeds-Bradford Airport as one of its chosen charities for 2014.

Hello, new to this forum, would just like to ask a question! There are apparently 2 runways at LBA (14/32). 14 towards horsforth and 32 towards menston, how is this when there is clearly only one runway? Is it 'theoretically' split into 2 depending which side the aircrcraft land/take off from? Thank you in advance for your help - Luke.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
