Heard a rumour that on the LBA anniversary day maybe something special happening, even a KLM 747 flypast.

Don't know if I'm right on this but i understand that LBA cannot handle a Boeing 747-400 as the runway is just not long enough for her. Yes a flyby is possible though.

I had heard that the retro painted KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Boeing 737-800, PH-BXA may make an appearance on one of the Amsterdam rotations in substitute of the normal KLM city Hopper, Fokker 70/100 aircraft.

I imagine a lightly loaded 747-400 would be able to land would it not if the 200/300 series can do it with passengers.The length of the 400 is the same as 100/200/300 series but with greater wingspan.

Won't they try their best to try and avoid it coinciding with the Hajj charters....? I suppose it's very fortunate that the anniversary is in the quieter period of Summer-Winter transition and every passenger can move through the airport easily.

It wouldn't surprise me if there is some mention along the lines of "....we have chosen to commence the refurbishment for the airport's anniversary...."

It would also be nice to see Jet2 paint on one of their aircraft, something along the lines of what they did with G-LSAE and Newcastle Airports' 75th Anniversary!

I've got tomorrow off work so will go up if it is tomorrow, although strong winds are forecast. Hopefully that won't put paid to any flypast or landing. Does anyone know if a 747 is coming for certain? Even a flypast would be something!

Just checked on Wikipedia and it says the airport opened 17th Oct 1931, so it must be true.

There was an article, front page in-fact showcasing the Airport's up-and-coming anniversary. On display there will be the propeller (Rolls-Royce) that made the first trip down to London in October 1919, or so the article said.

Unfortunately I can't recall anything more than that as it was a local paper for Menston and so there is no website, and I don't have a copy. I will try to find out more details though.

A propeller from the aircraft that made the first scheduled flight from Leeds to London in 1919 is to feature in an exhibition at Leeds Bradford Airport.

The mahogany and brass Rolls-Royce propeller from a Blackburn Kangaroo aircraft is thought to be the only surviving part of such an aircraft.

The flight was a result of a rail strike when the government took over civil aircraft for mail flights.

The propeller will feature in a display to mark the airport's 80th anniversary.

Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford Airport's Commercial Director, said: "We are delighted that such an important part of Leeds Bradford's aviation history will be on display at the airport to mark our 80th anniversary.[/textarea]

According to other posts on the LBA Forum, between 1300 and 1500hours.

Yorkshire Post News Paper have reported from the airport today. This video has just appeared on there website

John Parkin has said that new routes are going to be announced very shortly. Plus he expects the airport to pass the 3 million pax within the next few months.

Well done to BBC Leeds. They have really done good promoting LBA today. 2 shows this afternoon have featured the aiport.

LBA's Tony Hallwood was interviewed for about 5 mins on BBC Radio Leeds this afternoon at about 4:20pm on Andrew Edwards show. He gose onto mentions a bit more information compared to John Parkin regarding new routes to be announced in a few weeks time which he says will hopefully bring in more passengers into Yorkshire.

Liz Green dedicated a full hour of her lunchtime BBC Radio Leeds show talking about LBA. Ken Concliff was interviewed plus there was a listeners phone inn. Most of the comments were good but they were a couple of bad ones as you would expect.

Flypast, book launch and exhibition help mark milestone

It has been a high-flyer since 1931 and shows little sign of slowing down.

And even as it celebrates an 80th birthday, Leeds-Bradford International Airport (LBIA) today proved it is still capable of lighting up the sky.

A pair of Belgian F16s tore through the air on no less than five occasions in a spectacular flypast to help commemorate the Yeadon site’s birthday.

The planes were able to show off thanks to Ken Cothliff, who has penned a book charting LBIA’s history from the humble Yeadon Aerodome in October 1931 to the expanding multi-destination site which is widely regarded as one of the fastest-growing airports in the country.

Mr Cothliff’s book, Yeadon Above the Rest, has been launched alongside a photographic exhibition charting LBIA’s rise through the decades.

I've just watched the video on the YEP site and I had to laugh when Ken was asked about how the airport affected local residents. He said the airport was here before most of the residents. In a roundabout way he kind of said, if you don't like the smell of pigs don't live next to a pig farm.

Nice to here of some up and coming route development. Still nothing to report about the terminal expansion yet scaffolding has gone up in Check-in hall A and this evening contractors are beginning to dismantle a brick wall near desk number 1.
