Cornwall Airport Newquay - General Thread

Agreed Malaga, Alicante and Faro should be able to sustain year service. I'ld even throw Tenerife into the hat for at least once weekly service as well.
Guess it rely depends on how the relationship between the airport and Ryanair goes?

I personally think the airport would bend over backwards for Ryanair at the moment. The impact of them going again would be a real dent. Ryanair know it also... I would add that although Flybe account for 85% of the traffic at NQY I don't believe they would dable in sun routes while they have a few out of Exeter

Just booked a London Gatwick – Newquay return flight in December for a meeting at the Airport.

A couple of notable firsts for me

• First visit to Cornwall
• First time on Flybe

Bloodhound Super Sonic Car

The Bloodhound carried out its first public test today and the runway at NQY was the venue. It reached a speed of 210 mph but the ultimate aim is to reach 1000 mph. The current world land speed record is 763 mph.

The car will have to go abroad for tests at higher speeds with a dried-up lake in South Africa earmarked as the location.

The Bloodhound is built and developed in a nondescript warehouse-type building on an industrial estate at Avonmouth, Bristol.

I've been scanning the net for any rumors or news updates to come out of the recent routes event... I'm not sure if it was the first time NQY attended with some serious intent as they outlined in their news feed prior to going. I'm guessing that any new routes for next year as a result of attending or pre courting of airlines would have been made public by now (noting nothing new from Ryanair although given recent issues not surprising) Having said that we may get some early part of the year.
It would be great to see one or more sunshine destinations to compliment the growing network and continued growth...

Probably not too late for new routes to be announced for next summer. I don't expect anything like the phenomenal percentage growth of this year. For starters, next year will have a higher base from which to calculate percentage growth. I'd be very surprised if nothing new came along, very surprised.

Its good to hear Newquay is doing well, for years it was difficult to reach. I can remember Brymon Airways used to do a Heathrow link via Plymouth, I think it started with a HP Herald.

If NQY has some serious intent to get a hub link to Amsterdam, it may have now been scuppered somewhat if KLM are cutting back on UK regional links as suggested in other posts.
I am aware that the airport team have made no secret of trying to secure a big hub link in the absence of any link to LHR. AMS was quoted several times. Of course for now they do have a daily Dublin link year round.
So as we approach 2018 I wonder what if anything we shall get in terms of new routes..? other that Stuttgart it all looks the same so far.

Ryanair winter "ops" are on the wishlist and it's worth remembering the current PSO contract ends this year so there may well be changes afoot.

I'd be surprised if Flybe stopped the London route. I'd have thought they'd try and get it moved to Heathrow.

I don't think they will stop given the passengers that use the route how they have invested in routes at the airport over the last couple of years. As for Heathrow, who knows!
I really though Ryanair might have added a route from one of their bases in the canaries or Palma. All I believe would be as popular as the other routes. Obviously Alicante year round would be great

Ryanair is a mystery. They added based aircraft to ALC AGP and PMI but just seemed to have increased flights to the usual suspects like MAN and BHX I believe.
I was thinking that with the LGW route Flybe might shift it to Heathrow if the PSO ends especially with Heathrow slashing their domestic charges and offering incentives. Would be good PR for LHR to get a new domestic route and knick it from their rival Gatwick.

454,000 passengers for 2017 according to the local rag.. best ever year I believe and 22% up on 2016.
I’m sure the official figures will be slightly different but none the less, a great result for the airport and team.
As yet, only Stuttgart added as a new route... I believe Ryanair and eurowings are starting their programmes earlier so hope for more growth in 2018.

Like BRS, the airport seems to be underplaying its annual passenger numbers for some reason. The CAA shows 459,924 terminal passengers up 24.2% on 2016, over 6,000 more than NQY itself shows.

More Soaring Success at Cornwall Airport Newquay
Cornwall Airport Newquay has ended 2017 on a high having experienced its busiest ever December. The Airport handled 23,937 passengers during the last month of the year, a whopping 18% increase on the previous December.

The year as a whole was very close to record breaking numbers, with both July and August figures coming in as the second busiest ever. Total numbers for the year have been recorded as 453,795, up 22% on 2016, a number which is likely to see the Airport named “Fastest Growing UK Airport” for the second year running.

Commenting on the year, Al Titterington, Managing Director at Cornwall Airport Newquay said:

“What’s really positive in the 2017 stats is the huge spike in the winter passenger numbers. Experiencing our busiest ever December shows that our hard work over recent years to break down the seasonality of the Airport is starting to pay off.”

With 2018 now underway, the Airport management are focussing on another busy year ahead which sees one new scheduled route added to the summer programme (Stuttgart with Eurowings) as well as a new charter operator (Super Break) offering services from Cornwall for the first time, with the first charter to Seville operating in March.

The Airport has also welcomed the recent announcement by London Heathrow that they will reduce airport charges for domestic travellers with effect from 1 January 2018. This further shows Heathrow’s commitment to regional connectivity and the support that they are going to give to routes that connect regional airports such as Newquay to the nations’ international hub airport.

Al Titterington added: “It is a long standing ambition of ours to get a connection between Cornwall Airport Newquay and London Heathrow. The support we get from Heathrow is key to us achieving this so we very much welcome this further positive move from them in this respect.”

Another interesting figure to be released by the Airport with regard to 2017 was the number of hire cars rented from the Airport over the year. Over 18,000 cars were hired which is a 16% increase on 2016. This statistic demonstrates how the whole of Cornwall is benefiting from the Airport’s growth, with passengers being more mobile and visiting more of the County, helping the economy as a whole to prosper.

The Airport site now employees over 600 people directly, making it one of the larger employee sites in Cornwall. Aircraft Engineers, Pilots, Air traffic Controllers, Flight Training Instructors, Security Personnel and fire fighters are just a few of the skills employed on this diverse aviation site.

I believe LPL to NQY is well supported , could do with more than on per week, particularly when is was a A319 with Easyjet.
