New Newquay to Leeds Bradford air route for Spring 2016

A new air route from Newquay to Leeds-Bradford is expected to start operating next Spring

The Chancellor, George Osborne, announced in last week's Spending Review that 11 successful bidders across the UK had been awarded support from the UK Government's Regional Air Connectivity Fund - including Cornwall Newquay Airport.

The new flights with Flybe will offer fast journey times to Leeds-Bradford.

The new route from Newquay to Leeds-Bradford will take just 85 minutes

Exeter airport will also benefit from an additional route to Norwich.

Aviation Minister Robert Goodwill said: "Newquay and Exeter airports are vital engines for South West's economy, connecting the UK and creating opportunities. That is why the UK Government backs new South West air routes, with our investment benefiting hardworking people across the country."

The start-up aid bidding competition was open to airports with fewer than five million passengers per year and allows air routes that are not currently commercially viable today to be introduced early, giving time for airlines to build passenger numbers and deliver a more sustainable service.

It is anticipated that flights will begin from Spring 2016.

Start-up aid of up to £7 million is being provided through the Regional Air Connectivity Fund. The fund already supports strategic routes to London from Newquay and Dundee.

Newquay route to be introduced from Leeds Bradford Airport

By Alex Turner - Editor

FLIGHTS from Leeds Bradford Airport to Newquay are expected to begin next year after the route was chosen to be supported by the Regional Air Connectivity Fund.

The £7m government fund was open to airports with fewer than 5m passengers per year and is designed to support routes that are not currently commercially viable to be introduced, giving time for airlines to build passenger numbers and deliver a more sustainable service.

The Leeds Bradford-Newquay route will be operated by Flybe. Other routes from the north of England being supported are Newcastle-Norwich and Carlisle services to Belfast, Dublin and Southend.

Aviation minister Robert Goodwill said: "Carlisle, Newcastle and Leeds-Bradford airports are vital engines for the Northern economy, connecting the UK and creating opportunities."

The confirmation of routes followed the announcement by George Osborne in last week's Spending Review that 11 bids had been successful.

Also hearing we should hear something positive about more new routes been possibly announced before xmas.

If Aurigny are going to operate LBA-GCI they need to be putting it on sale by the end of the year, as most people who go to the Channel Islands book at that time.

I hear the finer details have now been worked out regarding Aurigny's proposed and now route licence approved Guernsey service is to be finally announced within days.

I know that a new leisure route will be announced tomorrow - Friday. It was described as a new airline, new destination and with no competition on the route, so could well be Aurigny. Or something else!

Well I'm going with a reintroduction of Guernsey or Inverness. It's getting a little late in the day for new flight announcements. Places further afield usually require more lead in time for sales. Usually most route announcements are made well before Christmas with all but a few exceptions.

Well, still nothing announced by LBA on their website, but.........at 1pm today, Leeds Bradford was not listed as a destination on the Aurigny website. At 3pm, Leeds Bradford was listed. Draw your own conclusions!

Just wondered about more polish routes. Why don't wizz air operate from Leeds Bradford instead of Doncaster Airport. We could really do with a airline like that.

I believe they go where the landing charges are lower, therefore choosing Lpl over Man, or Ltn over Stn for example.

I have no doubts that Wizzair would be happy to fly to LBA if LBA were prepared to offer huge financial incentives for them to do so. No point in bringing in flights if they end up costing you money rather than making money is there? Perhaps it is significant that the two airports in the North that they use have both been losing money - and lots of it!! Clearly Wizzair flying an ever increasing number of routes out of those airports has done little to make them profitable. What we really need at LBA is for Ryanair to increase their offering into Poland from LBA to include the likes of Warsaw, Wroclaw etc, but that would require (in all probability) a 4th based aircraft. There is a significant Polish population in West Yorkshire and too many are having to travel to DSA or LPL because there is no flight from LBA - when the demand is almost certainly there.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, AIR EUROPE are going to Palma from LBA fri mornings from June 2016 for Thomsons

Back in the days when Air Europa had it's old livery I would've been excited but their livery is so dull and uninspiring these days. Still, it's a different tail on the deck so I suppose we should be pleased.

Well you might not believe it but Air Europa have recently just under gone a re-branding this summer and the new livery is even worse than the existing one:

I can see why they are moving towards blue as it's the European flag colours. They should have added the member state stars somehow. A touch of Yellow would be nice too.

It's a far cry from the original colour scheme though which wasn't broken in the first place.

Interesting article appeared on the Travel Trade Gazette website today which mentions that flybe are launching 3 new routes from Newquay including flights to Leeds/Bradford and also includes comments from Newqauy Airport Management which I think is the first time I have see anything quoted by them regarding the funded route. So it looks like this route might actually be happening afteral even after flybe's snub of setting up a base down the road at Donny.

I think the move to a Blue Livery maybe more connected to Air Europa's closer links to the Sky Team Alliance which also includes Air France and KLM whom have blue in there liveries.

After reading the article posted on the Travel Trade Gazette website this morning I ended having a bit of twitter conversation directly with Newquay Airport this afternoon regarding the proposed Flybe Leeds/Bradford service. It seems they are very positive about the route happening from June 1st 2016 with an final confirmation still to be confirmed..

They Initially posted the following tweet:

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
