[textarea]Pool passengers will get 'more reliable' service

Springtime changes to bus services should give passengers from Pool-in-Wharfedale a more reliable service.

That is the view of Metro chairman Councillor Ryk Downes (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) over proposals that would affect the 757 (Leeds to Leeds Bradford Airport to Otley) and 967 Otley to Menston services from April.

Coun Downes also claims that most people who have attended consultation events on the proposals, which will include changes to the 747 (Bradford to Leeds Bradford Airport to Otley) service, have responded positively – although he insists the process is still ongoing.

As first reported in December, Metro (West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive) is proposing to turn the 757 into an express service that would finish at the airport and, on its way to Leeds train station, not stop to pick up passengers beyond The Fleece at Horsforth.

The 757 currently goes on to Pool-in-Wharfedale and Otley after the airport, but the new service would instead link to an extended half-hourly 967 bus which would run from Menston train station via Otley to Pool and then the airport.

Coun Downes acknowledges that the “trade-off” for Pool passengers would be losing a direct bus to Leeds – but believes passengers will be better served overall.

He said: “This should give Pool a more frequent and more reliable service to Otley and the airport and onto Leeds.

“The 967, which is partly funded by the town council, at the moment goes from Otley bus station to Menston train station and Menston every half hour.

“The idea is to extend it so it goes from Menston station to Otley bus station to the airport and then to Pool. The new service is proposed to start earlier, run later and and be every half hour during the day, which the 757 isn’t.” He added: “The change would involve losing a slow, direct bus to Leeds and replacing it with hopefully a more reliable, and more frequent, linked local service that will span a greater part of the day.

“We want to provide a better service to and from Otley, which, like the airport, acts as a springboard to other places.

“By linking the 757 to the 967 there should be less risk of buses not running and, if there is a problem, if you’re at the airport there are at least information displays up telling you when the next bus is coming – and a terminal to get a coffee from if you have to wait.

“Passengers will still be able to get into Leeds, they just won’t be able to do it from Pool in one bus.

“At the moment the 757 sometimes terminates at the airport if it is running late and so misses out Otley and Pool.

“And if the 757 ‘misses’ and you want to get back from Otley to Pool it’s a big problem, and you’re stuck.

“This is also about making the airport more of a ‘hub’, ahead of extra funding that will be coming from the airport for public transport initiatives.”

Metro is also considering reducing the frequency of the 747 service to hourly, and making it take a more direct route from the airport to Bradford.

Aireborough Civic Society has raised fears that residents in the Kirk Lane and Westfield areas of Yeadon would lose out as a result, but Metro says a new, half hourly 969 bus that would run from Guiseley train station to the airport, via Yeadon town centre, should plug the gaps.

Anyone who would like to comment on the proposed changes should contact either Metro (telephone and e-mail details available at wymetro.com) or Coun Downes on 0113 247 4580.

[textarea]Horsforth councillors want safety measures

Councillors in Horsforth are wanting safety measures on local roads to protect residents from increased airport traffic.

The demands to highways officers are being made in the wake of two accidents at the Bayton Lane/Brownberrie Lane junction on December 19.

No-one was killed in the accidents, which involved a bus and a car and later two other vehicles. but the injured were treated in hospital.

The accidents, happened des-pite work last year to improve safety at the junction which has a reputation for being an accident blackspot.

Coun Brian Cleasby said they were waiting for a police report on the two crashes, one of which happened at 7am and the other in the evening.

He said the two incidents in one day, both of which happened in the dark, indicated that there was still a problem at the junction.

The local ward councillors on Leeds City Council have been campaigning for months over the issue of road safety in Horsforth with traffic levels to the airport expected to increase, and they have received dozens of responses from residents who have put their own suggestions forward.

Now the ideas of residents are being put forward to highways officers by Councillors Cleasby and Chris Townsley.

They say the measures are urgently needed to protect local people from increases in traffic to and from Leeds Bradford Airport.

Suggestions include traffic calming measures, parking rest-rictions and the introduction of 20mph zones.

A number of improvements have been eequested on the Bayton Lane/ Brownberrie Lane /West End Lane crossroads, an area they are stressing has been the site of many accidents.

The suggestions put forward to planning officers include a reduced speed limit of 40mph on Bayton Lane, with the area around West End Primary becoming a 20mph zone.

Councillors are asking for the Bayton Lane/Brownberrie Lane junction to become a plateau and for it to be a ‘stop junction’.

They also want to see Chicanes put in as a means of calming traffic.A series of measures have been called for along Scotland Lane, with a plateau at Scotland Close and Fairfax View to protect vehicles exiting Scotland Way.

They want a pedestrian crossing at the end of Scotland Lane which is closest to Brownberrie Lane – making the route safer for children walking to Westbrook Lane Primary School.

The suggested measures would also included parking restrictions at the Brownberrie Lane end to prevent motorists parking there.

A 20mph zones along Westbrook Lane and Lee Lane to protect pupils going to the primary school and to Horsforth School is also wanted, Coun Cleasby said: “We have given our list of demands to highways and planning officials in order to protect Horsforth from the 90% of airport generated traffic not considered in the recent successful airport planning application.”

More dribble from Wharfedale Observer with their usual anti airport slant.

The vast majority of people using both Bayton Lane and Brownberrie Lane are commuters driving to and from work between the Yeadon and Guiseley area and Leeds. The country lane is too far off the beaten track for general 'airport users' as the paper describes them.

“We have given our list of demands to highways and planning officials in order to protect Horsforth from the 90% of airport generated traffic not considered in the recent successful airport planning application.”

This is simply not true. There is no way that 90% of traffic using Horsforth roads is airport related.

Aviador,

I've just posted a response to a post regarding someone who demands that LBA 'be moved' to DSA in which I pointed out that exactly the same sort of raving loonyism is sometimes written about Bristol Airport in letters to the local rags.

I can only say that this post resonates in exactly the same way. The increased traffic around BRS is blamed by local councillors on the airport whereas most is generated by locals who commute to work in the city from outlying villages.

One village supposedly did a count of vehicles passing through its high street which it blamed on the airport. These figures were farcical because it would have meant that nearly every person, including children, using the airport drove alone through that village.

LBA and BRS have even more in common than perhaps we already believed.

I think you're right TheLocalYokel. This paper never ceases to amaze me with what it publishes. How did you describe your local rag before?

I can't remember now. I've called it so many unrepeatable names in the past, and not just because of airport matters. :diablo:

The Yorkshire Evening Post has confirmed today that the 757 service will no longer serve Pool in Wharfedale from April.

Thats a real shame. I thought the airport were trying to enhance the bus services to LBA, not reduce them. This just shows a rail system of some sort seems more favourable, even though more expensive.

They are trying to enhance them. Pool is getting the extended 967 service, which will give them a direct service to Menston Rail Station. The 757 will be considerably speeded up as it is going to be limited stop. Then there is the new 969 running from Guiseley Station to the airport. the 747 from Bradford is also to be speeded up, although it is being cut back to hourly which is a retrograde step.

Overall, not too bad in the end.

I agree with Big-Man

The airport will be better served by local buses once the changes are made. The local mini buses that are currently been used on the 747 service to Bradford are going to be reallocated onto the new revised local 967 and 969 routes.

The tender which is currently in prorcess states that New 3 low floor single deck full size buses are to be aquired for the revised hourly services 747 and 737 to Bradford while 4 new buses will be required for the new improved every half hour limited stopping 757 airlink to Leeds.

I have heard so far that 3 compaines are intrested.

Also a new revised service 787 to York is about to go out to Tender and are looking for the service to commence in april as well.

Parking charges have just gone up. Little Leeds Bradford is now charging big airport prices.

I've just been looking at Liverpool's parking charges. The drop off zone is FREE for 10 minutes which is the same as LBA. Each ten minutes there after are charged at £2.00 for every consecutive ten minutes. So the charges will look something like this:

0-10 Min FREE
10-20 Min £2.00
20-40 Min £4.00
40-50 Min £6.00
50-60 Min £8.00

So the drop off charges are substantially higher than the equivalent charges at Leeds.

The Short Stay & Pick-Up car park charges at Liverpool are as follows:

Up to 20 mins £1.00
Up to 40 mins £3.00
Up to 1 hour £4.00
Up to 2 hours £6.00
Up to 4 hours £12.50
Up to 6 hours £19.00
Up to 12 hours £25.00
Up to 24 hours £28.00
Up to 2 days £56.00
Up to 3 days £84.00
Each additional day or part thereafter £28.00

So for short duration stays up to 40 min are cheaper at Liverpool but where stays last longer then Liverpool is more expensive.

Interestingly Short Stay 2 at Leeds is cheaper overall than short stay 1.

Long Stay parking prices at Liverpool are:

Up to 24 hours £25.00
2 days £40.00
3 days £50.00
4 days £57.00
5 days £62.00
6 days £68.00
7 days £75.00
8 days £82.00
9 days £89.00
10 days £96.00
11 days £103.00
12 days £110.00
13 days £117.00
14 days £124.00
15 days £131.00

So again, Liverpool is considerably more expensive than Leeds Bradford.

Cancellation Accepted: Operating between Harrogate Bus Station and Leeds/Bradford Airport given service number 767 effective from 18-Apr-2010

Hi this was taken from the latest changes on the VOSA website.

This now confirms the rumours that Harrogate and District have lost the new North Yorkshire route tender to Proctors of Leeming for the 767 service which runs from Airport to Harrogate via Pool village and Pannel.

Harrogate and District will run there last service on the route on Sunday, April 18th while the new service by proctors will start the very next day on Monday, April 19th

Which is a shame because Harrogate and District have provided a really good service as far as I am concerned.

Hi

Some further info has come to me regarding the new 767 Airport to Harrogate route. I've heard that they will be sticking to the exsisting timetable that is currently in use by Harrogate & District once they take over in April. But they are based all the way up in Leeming so I wonder if we might even see a route extension on some services for driver change overs and runing out of the garage first thing in the morning and back again last thing at night.

Also Aaccording to fleet news in Buses magazine for March 2010, Proctors of Leeming have just taken on a new VDL SB200/Wright Pulsar 2 for this service.

This now confirms what has already been said about Proctors of Leeming winning the new tender for the Airport to Harrogate service 767 , the registration appeared on VOSA today:

Hi

Dont know if anyone already knows but i've just been imformed that hot on the heels of Harrogate and District loseing its tender for the 767 Harrogate to Airport route to Proctors of Leeming, Now Firstbus in Bradford have now just lost the tender for the new revised 737 & 747 Bradford-Airport Metro connect services from April 18th onwards.

Instead the tender by Metro has been won and give to Centerbus Holdings PLC, Centerbus run local services in both Halifax and in Huddersfield under the Huddersfield Bus company and K-Line buses names.

Still up for grabs are the tenders for the Leeds to Airport shuttle 757 and the new local 967 and 969 routes to Pool, Otley, Guiseley, Menston and Yeadon

The 737 and 747 takeover by Huddersfield Bus Company (Centrebus) is now showing on VOSA. Hourly both routes, so that is a downgrade for the 747.

Well i think we all knew that the 747 was to be reduced to an hourly service when this changes to take place next month. Will be intresting to see what type of buses Centrebus will aquire for the route as the have to be full size single deckers instead of the Optaer solo minis that are currently used by First Bradford.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
