AA certainly need to pull the stops out on ORD. I forget how many flew the route in June, something like 7k I think. If you take 12k as a rule of thumb (12k in a 30 day month = 200 passengers per sector) it is tracking way behind where it needs to be.

Reports on other sites suggesting that American Airlines is dropping MAN-JFK completely. I'm still searching for an authoritative source to confirm this, but it does tally with recent reports that AAL are downgrading the long-haul hub at JFK in favour of concentrating on PHL. And MAN would be in pole position for any cutback given the far superior competition now competing on the JFK route.

Wow - I haven't seen confirmation of this yet, other than reference to it being in an AA company newsletter.

This would explain one or two things, including B788 on ORD. Perhaps they will funnel traffic through ORD (seasonally) and PHL.

This does raise (again) the question of the MAN-JFK gap being filled by BA.

But is there really a gap with VS & TCX to JFK and UA to EWR (assuming there are no other changes)?
I suppose one factor could be the split of UK and US passengers and whether US pax are more inclined to use the AA flights than the UK airlines if JFK is the origin or final destination. There could also be a few Business / loyalty card holders affected I suppose.

Anyway, I guess we have to wait for confirmation. If AA are pulling JFK, I really can't see BA replacing them. Won't the premium pax for New York simply be routed via LHR?

You could sugar coat this and argue that it's no great loss, or there are 3/4 other carriers to New York, or that it will support other routes (e.g. UA to EWR, AA to PHL/ORD).

I am a glass half full kind of guy, but I foresee this a possibly the start of what might be a slightly worrying trend.

Yes, TCX are doing great things at MAN and it is to be applauded. Without them we would not have direct routes to places like LAX, SEA, MIA, CPT. To be clear, I don't see this as TCX's problem or fault. However, they are ruthlessly showing a weakness in the market, specifically at AA.

Expanding on this, I would expect an AA/BA joint venture to hold its own between America's largest market, and the UK's second largest market. It's not exactly a long long haul flight and the passenger volumes are pretty large. However, they don't seem to get it right at JFK for now, and this may be the cause of the present issues.

I don't know if BA is the answer, because I don't know what they would deliver over and above AA. Once they have resolved their ongoing labour dispute and fleet modernisation they may be in a better shape to think about MAN but they clearly have major issues to deal with.

If this comes to pass, I hope this is a catalyst for UA and VS to strengthen their respective market shares, while AA focus on PHL and ORD. I like TCX, but MAN's great strength is that it does not place too much reliance on one single carrier, and I hope the diversity we've seen TATL continues for the foreseeable.

I really don't think this route cut is as a result of poor performance in the traditional sense.

AA are having a major fleet reallocation and switch of their JFK and PHL hubs. They are strengthening their PHL and ORD bases and weakening JFK due to under performance in general. Many other routes have been cut down/axed from New York, with more to come. EDI is next in the firing line I believe.

They want JFK to be o&d 772, so they now only serve the major markets: London, Paris etc. and have upgauged MXP to the 772. They obviously felt MAN wasn't strong enough in the current political/economic circumstances to do so and, as a result, was cut. They are now focusing on PHL and ORD, and, if they can bridge the gap with Chicago to make it year round, then that would be good.

Of course, nobody is sugar coating this as a great triumph...

Lost in the commotion (although previously picked up in the thread) is this confirmation:

Chicago O’Hare – Manchester eff 24MAR18 787-8 replaces 767 in S17, 1 daily

That AA's two remaining MAN routes (ORD and PHL) are no longer bottom of the pile should bode well for future reliability. Hopefully, they can get these routes in order before returning to MAN in the near future.

Quick question: is PHL now daily through the winter?

From memory it dropped to 6x weekly last winter...

The AA item in the MEN had an AA spokesman luxuriating in the fact that despite the loss of direct AA JFK there are still flights via Heathrow!

"I'll put the bunting up ".

Disappointing, but cutting ORD to short summer seasonal can't really be considered a surprise can it?

Have heard rumours of a return of CLT and JFK, the only route AA seem to have any traction on is PHL. Even that is losing passengers.

If this is right, and I don't want to trivialise this because it is a major loss, I hope it points towards more winter flying by VS and/or UA.

And are we stuck with a B757 or honoured with a wide body for the short season. Wasn't there talk of a B787 returning?

That service used to do well for Business passengers back in the 90's when I travelled on it on several occasions. The B767 with 30 J class seats were often full or nearly so up front with good loads at the back too. I imagine that a majority of the Business pax then were probably transfer pax at AA's major hub although the directors at the
company I worked for were just flying to ORD.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
