While it’s always good news for when BHX attracts a new airline, I have to say this airline is one we can easily do without. I don’t see it being popular with many passengers and it doesn’t seem like they will last long either.

Last year the day they were going to start had 80 paxs

Hi there all, not very good news at all about bhx, United Airlines increasing the capacity at Manchester airport due to demand, so where does this leave bhx, nowhere, absolutely nowhere, bhx has no direct flights to the USA at all, what a poor representation, can't even keep or retain services at all. At this rate if bhx is not careful, all other UK airports will overtake them, then that would be total embarrassment.. AndyC

Hi there big Vern, that doesn't sound very good news at all. Probably again, ema are offering a better deal than bhx, this has always been bhx problem, not prepared to do good deals, but crap worthless deals that only suit the airport and know one else.. AndyC

FEDEX going to EMA is logical given that the airport is a cargo facility that a good many freight carriers congregate with aircraft to match. Add the new warehouse space being built EMA is becoming ever more interesting whilst BHX appears to be stagnating but of course this is my simple opinion from a distance.

Hi there Jeenyjet, I totally agree with you about bhx stagnating, from losing direct links to USA, with AA, UA, Iceland Air to Reykjavik, Monarch that went out of business, transact to Canada. It just goes to show you the type of management that's been in place for a long time. But with the new CEO now in place, it's going to be a minimum of 12 months before any good deals could be made, by then, bhx could be losing more passengers to other airports, then being caught and overtaken by the 8th busiest airport.. AndyC

It seems that Fedex may have identified significant cost savings when the 5204 went to EMA during the runway closures last year. They guys have been told in about 5-6 weeks time they will be told whats happening.

Fedex moving to EMA is hardly surprising nor IMO is it that bigger deal for BHX. EMA has long been and will for the indefinite future be a larger cargo airport than BHX. In 2017 the following airports handled the following tonnes of cargo:

BHX - 2,595
MAN - 9,136
EMA - 29,302

Its no surprise Fedex are considering moving across to EMA, and frankly its amazing they've lasted this long at all!

As for TATL scheduled airlines, United was a long time customer of BHX for 20 years+. Their withdrawal from the airport had almost nothing, if anything, to do with the 'deal' that the airport had with them, but due to a change in their operating model - one of withdrawing the B757 from TATL services.

The fact that MAN has been upgraded to a B767 is evidence of this. The difference between MAN and BHX is that there is sufficient demand from that area to upgrade to a larger aircraft. Also consider that there is competition on the MAN - NYC route and the fact that the B767 is a wide body, with a better onboard product than the narrow body B757, and that it is easier to lure passengers away from competing airlines at the same airport than at other airports, and United's actions at MAN make perfect sense.

Back at BHX on the other hand, the B757 was pretty much the perfect size of aircraft for BHX - NYC. As United doesn't currently have a direct replacement for the B757 and nothing smaller that they fly TATL, the only 2 remaining options for United at BHX were either to upgrade here as well (likely to a B767) or to close the route. As much as I'd love to see a B767 on the BHX - NYC route, I doubt there's sufficient demand for that much capacity, and it would be very unlikely to be cost effective for United. As a result, the most cost effective solution for United was to close the route and direct passengers to use their MAN & LHR services.

AA launching a competing NYC route in hindsight IMO was a mistake and the airport management should have focused on getting more from United. Even if the route could sustain 2 airlines, AA have been reducing the size of their JFK TATL network (pretty sure the only UK destination AA now serve from JFK is LHR).

Monarch wasn't just a BHX airline so you can hardly blame the airport for what happened to them.

The Canadian market has been gradually declining over recent years, and Air Transat's A300 & A330 were likely too much capacity for the BHX route and could be used more effectively elsewhere. Again unlikely anything to do with BHX themselves. Air Transat does have A321NEO/LR on order which would be the perfect size for BHX, but to be honest I'd personally prefer WestJet.

Icelandair I don't have an excuse for other than the B757 was old, expensive and too much capacity to make the route work. I really hope that as they get more 737MAX's that they consider returning to BHX. (IMO the 737MAX looks great in the Icelandair livery!)

Hate to bring up the B word again, but I think it's clear that many airlines are holding off on launching new routes until more about the outcome is known.

Just keep telling myself to focus on all the construction of offices & apartments going on in Birmingham right now and that growth at BHX will come as a result in time. I think once HS2 opens around 2026/27, Birmingham will almost be a completely different city with most of the under construction projects having been completed. Hopefully by then more airlines will take note of Birmingham the city and BHX will be able to gain new routes.

If we ever do get TATL back I would put my money on it being flown with an A321neo. Sadly United don't have any on order at the moment although American and Delta each have 100 on order.

Think that AA and Delta are using the A321neo to replace domestic B757's, whereas United are using the 737MAX10 to replace their domestic 757's.

The replacement for TATL 757's for all three airlines will likely be the Boeing NMA which we may see some news on in the next year or two.

It's believed that the 797 will most likely be a wide bodied aircraft probably similar to the 767 300 and 400.

Wide body passenger deck, narrow body cargo deck ;)

The 787 was designed to replace the 767, and the 797/NMA is suggested to fit the gap between 787 and 737 I believe.

Boeing believes there's a large enough gap in the market for an entirely new aircraft. Airbus seem to be happy with stretching the A321NEO I think...

I think the airlines may have other ideas especially the American ones. I think they see the 797 as a good replacement for the 767.

I'm sorry that I have just copied and pasted a big list of Ryanair expansion for S19, however this just sums it up. BHX is not going anywhere, anywhere fast. :(

I cannot see the need for a new aircraft unless it replaces a current variant of an existing airframe. Boeing seem to have all things covered between the 737, 777 and the Dreamliner.

What does seem apparent is a requirement for a new powerplant and RR have dropped themselves from the program.

If it is to succeed the venerable 757, a super 737 would seem to be logical but I read somewhere that it is to be a Widebody so it may be a shrunken 777. Similar in concept to the 747SP.

What is the requirement? Capacity or Range? Electric or Gas Turbine? If a new aircraft is to be built surely something of a departure from the current norms is needed.

I feel a Saturday debate coming!!

And the day that I do see BHX on that list, I will probably choke on my crisps but hopefully it wont be fatal. :inpain:
Interestingly with the exception of the 2 London airport's it seems that Ryanair's focus for expansion has been in the South West of the UK with Cardiff, Exeter and Bournemouth and the North West with Liverpool and Manchester.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
