Looking at the just released EZY schedule for the second week of August 2018 there will be 334 departures a week from BRS.
There were 324 departures on the same week in 2017, and 314 in 2016, making an increase of 10 flights per week every peak summer.
These additions towards the end of August push the weekly departures up to 345 which would very likely need aircraft number 16!
I'll go and look at the schedule in more detail.

easyJet puts its summer flights on sale for Bristol

Flights available to book up until 2nd September 2018

easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has put its flights for summer 2018 on sale this morning meaning that thousands of flights from Bristol are now on sale up until 2nd September 2018.

Over 6754 easyJet flights are set to take place to and from Bristol between 25th June 2018 and 2nd September 2018 providing more than 1174464 seats for passengers to enjoy their summer holidays.

Over 19,286,556 seats are being launched today across the entire easyJet network so customers can look forward to low fares by booking early.

Customers can look forward to a number of routes to destinations such as:

Bristol to Cyprus Paphos from £46.49*
Bristol to Faro from £28.49*
Bristol to Barcelona from £28.49*
Bristol to Naples from £33.49*

Madrid 1 October 2017

EZY 6035 due to dep BRS for Madrid at 1750 today has been cancelled as has the return working EZY 6036 due at BRS at 2300. The flight has been re-scheduled to depart BRS at 0630 tomorrow (2 October).

My son and 22 other members of a cricket club are currently stuck in Madrid having been told that the cancellation of this evening's flight is due to air traffic restrictions. This may or may not be the reason but air traffic restrictions would be a reason for the airline not to have to pay compensation.

There are eight other flights (easyJet and Ryanair) departing for Spanish destinations this evening from BRS and all appear to be operating normally. In fact, the easyJet Madrid is the only flight to be cancelled at BRS today across all airlines.

Madrid Airport arrivals page features dozens of inbounds this evening and the only flight shown as cancelled is that from BRS. Air traffic restrictions? Hmm!

Just had a look at Flight radar and that flight was down as an A319 aircraft 30 mins before it's departure 2 A319s were due to land one from Basel which was 25 mins late and one from Bilbao which was 40 mins late. The Basel aircraft was supposed to operating MAD and the Bilbao aircraft is currently over the English Channel on the way to Toulouse which departed 50 mins late.
I can only guess EZY might get a fine for being late into a big airport like MAD or couldn't get another slot so cancelled the flight and blamed ATC.
Sucks for the passengers especially as many will have work tomorrow.

Thanks Jerry. I'd noted the arrival of those two aircraft.

I've contacted my son. They are being put up in a Marriott hotel and having first been told it's an atc issue they've since been told it's an aircraft issue, but easyJet website apparently says crew issue.

There are certainly some unhappy people who will be unable to get to work tomorrow although that's always a possibility with a late evening flight home.

As always, most people just want to be told the truth. It might be a nuisance but at least they know where they stand. Airlines so often fail to communicate properly with their passengers when there are problems like this.

My instinct from the beginning was that it was either an aircraft issue or a crew issue.

Yes as always honesty is good for your brand it breeds trust. One of the reasons i fly with KLM is because i know they will look after me as their customer.
Looking at the time the aircraft arrived back i'd suggest that the crew would've run out of hours before they got back to BRS which i suppose is a consequence of how tight each aircraft is scheduled and may suggest they don't have many back up crews on standby at BRS at that time of day.

I wouldn't have thought the previous flight (from Basel) landing at BRS 20 minutes late which is what is shown on the BRS arrivals page ought to have made that sort of difference.

Well total time for the Basel journey was 3 hours 35 mins that's flying and departure.
Madrid would've been 4 hours 40 mins roundtrip? 7 hours 15 mins total. I don't know how long a day pilots and crew can work from start to finish.
I've heard 9 and half hours for short haul and 16 hours for long haul but I don't know if they are correct. If the crew had got a delay in MAD then it could've been possible they would've been tight for hours to get back to BRS.

It's now even stranger because the aircraft allocated to the 1750 to Madrid this evening, G-EZGD, actually operated the 1840 to Barcelona according to FR24.

As for being out of crew hours, on 28 September the same aircraft operated the 1750 to MAD leaving 27 minutes late, having come in from Bilbao.

An update on the easyJet Madrid cancellation last night when the flight was re-scheduled for this morning.

I spoke to my son on his return and he could not be more impressed with the way easyJet handled the situation. He is not someone who is usually liberal with his praise either.

The passengers, including the 23-strong cricket team of which my son was a member, were taken by coaches to a Marriott hotel about 15 minutes away where there was an excellent buffet meal with wine and water on the table, all courtesy of easyJet. After spending the night in comfortable rooms they were returned to Madrid airport this morning and arrived back at BRS shortly before midday.

Prior to take-off the first officer appeared at the front of the cabin to offer easyJet's apologies. The only unknown is the reason for the overnight delay.

We hear horror stories on occasions about the way some airlines deal with passengers when flights are cancelled so it is very pleasing and reassuring to learn how well easyJet dealt with last night's problem.

7 years ago this was exactly my experience with EZY. BCN flight cancelled to BRS. I actually told the handling agent flight was canx as it had never left BRS and he was not aware but my colleagues in BRS alerted me.

Next day they handed out compensation forms. I did not take one as i was so impressed with how they treated us in the hotels with food and accommodation.

I'm not aware of the reason.

It was started by easyJet in December 2015 four years after Ryanair gave up the route. It was 2 x weekly year-round but around this time last year when easyJet published its summer 2017 BRS programme RAK was not included. Later during last winter RAK was added to the summer 17 programme to operate 2 x weekly until the end of May then 1 x weekly for the rest of the summer. In three weeks' time it will cease.

Loads have always been very high summer and winter. For example since it went single daily in June this year the monthly load factors for June, July and August were respectively 95.7%, 92.7% and 95.4%. Next Tuesday's outbound looks pretty full already.

It shows yet again that nearly full aircraft every week don't necessarily indicate a successful route, or perhaps not as successful as other options. Furthermore, it's not only Ryanair that axes routes with regular monthly load factors well into the 90s% at BRS, and no doubt elsewhere too.

Had a reply from easyJet regarding marrakech. Apparently it is not being discontinued and may be a seasonal route.

So it would seem that RAK will be added at a later date to the summer 2018 programme. As I mentioned in a recent post, the route was only put in (or put back in as it was then) for summer 2017 some time after most of the other routes had been announced and put on sale.

If easyJet is intent on operating RAK in summer 2018 I don't understand why it wasn't announced along with all the other routes.

easyJet resumed its KEF route this morning - it will be 2 x weekly November -January (with an additional weekly rotation for three weeks over the Christmas/New Year holiday season) and 3 x weekly February and March.

WOW operates its final KEF rotation tomorrow. As one door closes another opens.
