Cardiff: Aer Lingus Flight Status, Hub News & Discussion

Use this prefix for new threads for Cardiff Airport
There seems to be a bit of debate over when Emerald Airlines will start in January 2022 or 2023. The official release says 2023. If so should CWL be looking for another airline for the Dublin route or just be patient and hope they'll either launch early or wait for 2023?
 
If the airport doesn't look for an operator for the Dublin route, the passengers presently using BRS because they have no other choice may decide to keep using BRS in the future, it will leave CWL with an even harder job to persuade those passengers to use CWL for the route should or when the route restarts. I have family friends who have a son and new baby to visit and can't wait for a CWL service to restart. They have used the ferry from Fishguard twice of late. Ireland is about the easiest place to visit, with minimum restrictions on British visitors who have been fully vaccinated.

That's the problem the passengers will go elsewhere and with Ireland opening up and foreign holidays not well fully open a Dublin route could provide valuable footfall that CWL obviously needs right now even if the route was only a 4 weekly 50-70 seater. But i suppose there's not a lot they can do if the airlines aren't either willing to or can't start until 2022 or 2023.
 
Emerald Airways are launching in 2022, routes have been released and Cardiff has missed out yet again. Nothing to Belfast, Cork or Dublin. It’s a shame as Eastern to Belfast is expensive and Dublin provides the onward connections to the USA. Shame.

Where did you find that info out as I can’t see anything to suggest what routes they will serve
 
A further post in the other forum states that Emerald Airlines are denying that the information published earlier reflects their start-up plans.

Emerald ate denying that the info is accurate. It was published in CH Aviation. Hopefully Emerald plan to honour Stobart Air plans to fly Belfast to Cardiff.
 
Did Aer Lingus (Stobart) operate in competition with Flybe on this route? if not would this be the first time, at least in recent history, that two airlines competed on CWL-BHD?

No they didn't, before Flybe went bankrupt Aer Lingus regional didn't operate from Belfast City it was only Aer Lingus mainline to LHR and some sun routes i believe. Stobart Air did put onsale Cardiff to Belfast City but went bust themselves before the route launched. Hopefully Emerald will launch it themselves in the future. I know Eastern are on the route but the Aer Lingus brand and pricing would be more attractive to people.
 
Stobart was competing with Flybe on the Dublin route and pulled off the route as they couldn’t compete with an airline effectively being subsidised.

I don’t think Emerald will be back for a while. They need to start making money on sure thing routes prior to gambling on Cardiff service and the airport not encouraging a second operator on the route.

At the time it was stated on the dried fruit forum I believe it was that they withdrew due to lack of onward connections to the USA and it was Flybe that were dropping the route to 1 daily in the night and going to boost Glasgow instead.
As for Emerald would they be really worried about competition from Eastern Airways?
Yes it's probably be a while until we see them on the Cardiff route. Sadly Cardiff will not be much of a priority for them.
 
It’s possible. I notice it says that their might be other new routes for 2022. If Eastern aren’t planning on sticking around it could be emeralds chance.

Well if they are essentially going to do what was the old flybe schedule i'd have thought Cardiff should stand a good chance of being added in future expansion along with airports like Aberdeen and Liverpool and East Midlands and Inverness.
