Decision on East Midlands Airport runway expansion next week

Plans to extend the runway at East Midlands Airport look set to be approved, although a restriction on night flying may be introduced, the Leicester Mercury reports. The airport first applied nine years ago to add 620ft to its 10,000ft airstrip to allow planes carrying heavier cargoes to land. Airport bosses say the extra space will not mean bigger planes landing and taking off, only heavier ones, which need more room. It also could lead to more ‘commercially attractive long-haul services’, in particular to America.

North West Leicestershire District Council is expected to decide on the application next Tuesday, the newspaper reports. Planning Officers say that the application should be approved but with conditions attached to limit night-time flying between 23:00 and 07:00. Currently the airport has no restrictions on noise or night flying.

The runway is 2893 m already. I don't see why the runway can't already operate "commercially attractive long haul services to America".

The £4m 190 metre runway extension has been approved by the local authority. So soon the airport will have what is considered as a 'full' length runway.

There has already been a fair amount of tit for tat over the years between BHX and EMA. Bmibaby moved a sizable part of it's operation away from EMA at one point because of the arrival of Easyjet. Over the coming years it is likely that the two airports will continue to fight each other for long haul traffic but EMA has a freight handling advantage.

East Midlands Airport hotel ‘topping out’

Airport property company MAG Developments hosted a ‘topping out’ ceremony this week, to mark the completion of the highest point in the structure of its new £22-Million, five-storey, Radisson Blu hotel at East Midlands Airport. At the ceremony, the Azure Property Group - who will operate the hotel under The Rezidor Hotel Group's Radisson Blu brand - also announced the appointment of Daniel Keane as General Manager of the 218-bed hotel.

Mr Keane, said: ‘It is great to see the hotel reach this important milestone. The Radisson Blu East Midlands Airport will be one of the premier hotels in the region, with first class facilities and the finest conference and meeting rooms in the area, supporting both business travellers and local businesses.’

The hotel will have eight executive suites, a restaurant, bar and leisure facilities. It has also been designed to be highly energy efficient and has been awarded the highest ever BREEAM rating for a commercial hotel, scoring 76.17% - well above the 70% ‘Excellent' benchmark.

They seem by far the most proactive airport for reducing carbon emissions. It would be nice to see some internal designs of the development.

East Midlands Airport will 'handle double the amount of passengers'

EAST Midlands Airport will grow to handle more than double the current amount of annual passengers, according to a new plan.

And bosses hope the airport will be able to transport people to "every top destination in Europe" in the coming years.

Airport chiefs have launched a "sustainable development plan" which would see passengers more than double from around 4 million a year to 10 million a year in the next 25 to 30 years.

I always smile wryly to myself when I read the comments from locals whenever an article is printed in the local press about the local airport. It doesn't matter which airport is featured but you always get people complaining about lack of destinations and being 'ripped off'. These people always believe that a neighbouring airport is much better and they will always use it if they get the chance.

The daft thing is that locals of that neighbouring airport often make the same comments and say they would use their neighbouring airport (ie the one complained of by its own locals) when the opportunity arises.

Obviously it's not every local person, probably a small minority, but they are the ones who make the most noise.

Terminal redevelopment continues at East Midlands Airport


East Midlands Airport is set to open a new premium lounge in August, marking the latest phase in its £12m terminal redevelopment programme.

Two catering outlets – Grab and Fly and Leon – have also opened in recent weeks signalling the completion of the airport's new food offering.

Ministers renewed their appetite for HS2, announcing the proposed route for the northern legs after it reaches Birmingham from London. But the bad news was that the Birmingham to Leeds route would still not be connecting at East Midlands Airport.

The original plan was for HS2 to go under the airport runway via a 2 km tunnel, but with no direct link. The tunnel was then scrapped to meet an £800m cost saving. Instead ministers said HS2 would pass to the east of the M1 and the runway, under Roxhill’s East Midlands Gateway development.

Chancellor announces funding for East Midlands expansion plans

The Chancellor has unveiled funding to support a development body to oversee plans to expand East Midlands Airport and the new HS2 station.

Philip Hammond, in a speech to the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham in Monday, said that the organisation would be locally led and support the area around Toton.

The new HS2 rail station in Toton is not due to open until 2033 and new development body will help accelerate the detailed design work, land acquisition and site preparation in the Toton Growth Zone.

How are the terminal and airfield upgrades at East Midlands Airport coming along lately? I know the new-look security hall and next-gen scanners have been up and running for a while now, but I'm curious about the progress on the newer arrivals hall overhaul, the immigration refresh, and the updated departure lounge retail space. Out on the airfield, have the major cargo gatehouse and apron expansion works been fully wrapped up as part of the £120m investment programme? Any updates from those who have transitioned through the airport recently would be great to hear.

East Midlands: Thread 'Upcoming Flights & Passenger Travel Plans'

Booked EMA to Vienna with Jet2 for a Christmas market trip in Dec.

Although we're not returning to EMA we booked the departure as it gets us into Vienna at around 10:05 whereas other airports didn't arrive until around 18:00, a big difference when we're only there 2 days. The other advantage being as it's the last run of the season we got 4 flights for not much over £200, which is decent for the peak season 🙂

Never used EMA before but I'll leave a review once we're back 👍
