Sun Express flight #SXS560 Friday, July 5th 2024 delayed & Diverted due to emergency concrete repairs to the runway at Leeds Bradford Airport
What was supposed to be a 4 hour 20 minute flight turned in to a nightmare 7 hour 35 minute journey home from
#Turkey.
We boarded our aircraft Boeing 737-800, TC-SEO at 12:30 (UTC) for a 13:10 departure from Antalya but due to a slot delay we didn’t get away until 14:30.
2 hours 20 mins into flight the captain give us his flight update, he mentioned that we had 2 hours to go and would arriving into Leeds at around 17:00 local and that the skies were clear with the temperature around 16 degrees.
3 hours into the flight Captain gives us another update telling us were having to divert into Münster Osnabruck for refuelling as LBA was closed to allow repairs to the damaged runway.
After refuelling was completed the captain then informed us that we would remain on the ground in Germany for a 1 hour 15 mins to allow enough time for the reopening of the runway at LBA at 19:00.
We took off from Münster Osnabruck at 18:55 (CET) and after a short flight across the North Sea we arrived overhead LBA at 19:00 (BST) to find out that the runway was still closed.
So we then did 3 circuits of the LBA overhead hold having a nice scenic view of Yorkshire from 10,000ft. We finally made an approach to Leeds/Bradford ILS Runway 32 and landed at 19:35 only 3 hours 35 mins late.
Big thankyou goes the to both the flight & cabin crew of flight SXS560 as they kept us informed though out the ordeal. They were working overtime thoughout the flight, after dropping us off they then had to do the return sector back home to Antalya.
