A new airport.... South Yorkshire Airport City?

When Doncaster reopens what’s the initial plan.

Return of the Tui. I certainly think so as it’s needed in the north east especially near up Lincolnshire.

First off they need to base 2-3 based aircraft and bring back big money maker routes such as Malaga,Mallorca,Faro,Gran Canaria,Tenerife,Lanzarote,Antalya,Dalaman,Rhodes,Paphos.Alicante

Then I would look getting a direct route to Dublin and Belfast whether that’s 3 weekly or a daily service again it’s something north east Lincolnshire have missed out on.

Maybe easyJet could boast the joints in Doncaster rebuild so like Summer or year round routes to Rome,Milan,Paris,Faro

For that return I think that would work handy for Doncaster

North east Lincolnshire has been less mentioned. It needs its 2022 stability back it needs to grow its fortunes back.

People have to go to Manchester for a 6am flight and leave at 2am when a 30-40 minute drive down the M180 A15 from Scunthorpe and Lincoln is a great solution where you time to spare.

Thoughts?
No chance.

……As a comparison look at the experience on the newly constituted Board for LBA post AENA transaction……

Just to add they’ve also been on the lookout for NEDs since December and as far as I can see they’ve had no success in landing anyone…..hardly a surprise as would anyone who meets the criteria want to be associated with this bunch? https://www.parkinsonlee.com/news/jobs/aviation
Where is the new board for aena?

It’s just an opinion of what I think that will happen not it will happen. My lord
I can appreciate you want to talk theory and aviation/strategy stuff on here but I once again strongly recommend you read this thread (and the room) before commenting on this particular thread.

This is hilarious:

It is as if the editorial team at YP genuinely believes Peel is some sort of local philanthropic society or a village parish council, rather than a ruthless, multi-billion-pound corporate property and logistics developer.

It also amuses me that they seem to think The Problem is public confidence, not the total absence of demand. It is the classic Tinkerbell theory of local economics: if everyone just claps their hands and has enough "confidence" then a multi-million-pound commercial aviation market will magically appear out of thin air! 🤣

It’s also just them trying to avoid a Chadwick led lynching. Clearly it’s a failure of journalism too but we shouldn’t be so surprised about that.

The rumour is that Ros Jones has told the council the renegotiations will not be complete in September and that unless Gainshare is approved at the SYMCA board meeting in September then the project is effectively finished.

I expect there’ll be some moving of money around so they can claim another stay of execution. However I think Grant Thornton audit findings should be released in the Autumn which may throw another spammer in the works if a project that appears to be grinding to a halt behind closed doors (and away from the eyes of the people employed by FlyDoncaster!).

There’s no wonder they can’t recruit NED’s into any commercial roles, least that’s what I understand.

They clearly don’t want to accept that, much rather spend other people’s cash to save face. However I’m wondering whether Peel will concede something and then the S151 at SYMCA reveals other concerns?

Ultimately though it looks like Peel are being lined up as the villain again.

There is of course absolutely no reason nor any incentive for Peel to tear up a previously agreed legally binding contract just because CDC and the SYMCA have realised that signing it was just crazy. Tough!

If anything Peel would probably end up in a better position if the airport reopening scheme is abandoned with CDC then desperately wanting them to develop the land and, almost certainly, bring about more jobs and a more guaranteed financial gain than DSA ever will. And, no huge debt for the ratepayers of Doncaster other than that already accumulated in the pursuit of a ridiculous vanity project.

Of course, however Peel will be well aware that they’ll always be resented by a sizeable proportion of the Doncaster population as being the company who closed the airport, refused to help reopen it and ultimately built houses on it.

I still think there’ll be a stay of execution. I bet Gareth Sutton is under immense pressure to say yes too. But in the background perhaps Coppard has realised that his predecessor could have saved the airport for £20million and chose not to, he and Gareth Sutton are probably wondering what’s changed.

I don't think the guys at Peel will lose sleep over that. Besides, I don't think there's quite as much genuine support as some people make out. If the public was confronted with the reality of the situation then I suspect what support there is would disappear in a heartbeat.

I just wonder if Jones and Coppard might decide that the time has come to call it a day. They're out of money, the lease looks very unlikely to be renegotiated to SYMCA's requirements, and Grant Thornton are likely to deliver another damning verdict just as they're forced to admit they're out of cash.

Why keep fighting? They surely know there's bugger all demand and as far as I can make out, the site is nowhere even remotely near ready to fly passengers anyway. Even if they had the money I don't see how they can possibly be ready for Easter 2028, and so the public will see they've been lied to again.

Peel are notorious land bankers and continually run up against local authority opposition - in every instance they carry on regardless….They will only bend on the lease if it is in their interests - they already have an agreed lease at the end of the day!
Meanwhile in other news…https://nowthenmagazine.com/article...-the-project-still-going-ahead-oliver-coppard

Thanks for posting this, I was going to but it felt like it was perhaps taking too much of a climate slant than people might like on here - though I have sympathies with that cause!

I agree and I don’t think it’s unanimously supported either, certainly not going by social media cynicism although I accept that’s not usually an accurate reflection of the public at large!

I think what might make Peel budge is if they are cornered into some concessions to further their Gateway East plans. However, the council/SYMCA may have already caused bad blood over the suggestion that the money can be recovered through rates retention. I’m pretty sure Peel will be face palming the idea that companies are going to move to the site to pay more in business rates than they perhaps could elsewhere!

They may budge on the turnover topslice, they may not. However like you say with Grant Thornton likely to raise more concerns in due course there is going to be a multi pronged approach to stopping the project and they might be getting their ducks in a row to start the deflection and blame game when the inevitable happens.

Whatever though, I know that airline planning departments are watching this unfold, not because they necessarily are interested in flying from there but so they can build a strategy to compete with anyone who might have the balls to!

Business rates is my industry. CDC can do nothing to affect actual rateable values and unless there are significant legislation changes they cannot change the UBR (the pence in the pound that is charged) to occupiers either. CDC’s comments on business rates is purely down to what they keep in business rating income and nothing else, so occupiers of new property at gateway east would not be paying more than anywhere else as the rateable values depend on rental values. Peel won’t lose any sleep whatsoever over these comments by CDC. Another irony that if the airport fails and as a result there is more commercial development on this site than there would be otherwise, CDC would get greater business rates income without having to use all their gainshare funding and more of a frivolous project. On top of this the likelihood of more well paid and permanent jobs from the site being redeveloped also.

It gets better!

Damian Allen resigns on June 22. This is exactly one week before the confidential briefing where councillors were told the project runs out of money in September. Allen looked at the rapidly evaporating bank balance, realised they were staring down the barrel of insolvency, and immediately hit the eject button. Nice one! 🤣

None of those additions will do anything to alleviate Grant Thorntons concerns….They really are struggling to get anyone with a decent pedigree on board - not one of these appointments has any experience of the commercial activities involved in running an airport operation….the guy involved in Birmingham etc is a civil engineer…….

That's probably the least of their worries. They're nearly out of cash, they know the market isn't interested, and they wouldn't be ready for Easter 2028 even if they had the money and the expertise.

Time to stop telling porkies and call it a day.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
