Leeds Bradford: Aviation Nostalgia Thread

Who remembers when hispania went bust and one of their 757s was stuck at LBA for some time? I seem to recall a 737 on the apron too?
1989. One 733 and one 757 impounded at LBA. The leasing company for the 733 had a cherry picker brought to the airport and a guy sprayed the tail all white where it was parked. Seemed an odd thing to do but I was watching him do it from my bedroom window. The French airline, Aeromaritime took over the Hispania 737 flights for the rest of the season.

A question for our older members. Back in the 1970s and 80s when we only had six self-manouevering stands at the airport, what is the largest or longest aircraft you remember seeing parking, simply by following the markings and without a marshaller? For me, it would be the DC9-30 or the BAC1-11 500. I remember in 1985 the JAT 707s and BKT TriStars parked on about stand 4 to begin with but they definitely had marshal guidance. Eventually these and other larger aircraft parked on the apron extension, mainly facing west.

Thankyou.

Lots of 737 200s too. I know a Constellation of the US Air Force came in too.

The longest of the Constellation types is 116 feet and the DC6B comes in at 105 feet. The BAC 1-11 - 107 feet and the DC9 - 119 feet. Looks like it's the DC9, which would mainly have been British Midland aircraft, with occasionals from Martinair and Aviaco. The Transavia Caravelles should too have fitted nicely. All assumes wingspan wasn't an issue with the terminal building on one side and the apron taxiway on the other.

I still wonder what took LBA so long to adopt nose-in parking; it wasn't until 1997 that this occurred, whereas the likes of East Midlands and Newcastle had gone down that route years previously. I accept there may have been an issue with stands 1-6 being close to the runway protected strip but no reason not to have nose-in further down, unless airport management wanted a degree of consistency.

Nose in parking maximises the available apron space available but requires tugs etc. In those days there were fewer aircraft and no shortage of apron space.

Knightair crash, 27 years ago.

Is this an old article as this date is just over 31 years ago, not 27?
Regardless of this it was a very sad occurrence. Think YEA could have been good for LBA at the time, as could Capital had they survived. We may not then have lagged behind as much as we have

I thought it didnt seem like 27 years ago, but as you point out it was actually 31. How time flies. Theres a nice memorial in the churchyard at Dunkeswick.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
