I went to a presentation at the airport not long after the Tristar incident.We saw a video of this.
The arrester bed at the Horsforth end did a great job. The aircraft left the runway at 60mph and stopped in two thirds of the aircraft length.

Interesting leaflet. Wonder what the third generation jet aircraft was? Was it BKS who got swallowed up by BA?

Merged with BA in 1976

The first jets were two Hawker Siddeley Tridents in April 1969.

They were Trident 1E's, as operated by BEA and were actually registered G-AVYC and G-AVYD. They only ever got the two of them. BKS became Northeast before merging with BEA/BOAC and Cambrian to form British Airways.

I was watching Aviadors video clips that he posted on the PIA thread and the first video, the one above displayed a variety of aircraft, that I unfortunately am too young to remember and I was wondering if anyone could give me details on the aircraft, possibly when and why it was at LBA....?!

Including:
Air Afrique B727
United Arab Emirates B707 and B747
Virgin B747
Air Hong Kong B747
Air Atlanta B747

I'll see what I can remember...

- Air Afrique Boeing 727. That's an easy one as I flew on it in summer 1986. YU-AKK
was the one I flew on from Ljubljana to Leeds. There may have been YU-AKL in
Afrique colours as well but I'm not sure. By 1987 it (they ?) had reverted to JAT
colours.

- UAE aircraft. I recall these making several visits in the 80s and 90s. I think British
Airways used to provide maintenance and crew training, hence the regular
appearances of Capt Mike Webster on both the 707 and 747.

- Virgin 747. I think this only came in once, during 1987. Again I believe it may have
been for crew training as Virgin was a relative newbie back then.

- Air Hong Kong 747. I've seen the pics but don't remember it when it visited !
Perhaps another crew training mission.

- Air Atlanta 747. Late 90s I think for this. If I recall correctly, we had a pair parked
at the same time on the eastern part of the main apron. Might have been a sports-
related charter.

Let me know if you think of any other oldies and I'll see what I can come up with. 😆

OMG, I'm quite new to this site but what an amazing thread this is for all us oldies! One of my personal favorites as a kid was watching Stuart Owen, the old terminal manager putting up the next days flights on the arrival/departures board at the bottom of the stairs. Black background with white stick on capital letters. I remember him putting up a BY flight to Gutersloh once and me having to go home and look up in an atlas where Gutersloh was.

I am fairly sure that the Virgin 747 was a one off charter from and to Gatwick, and when it took off it did an amazing right turn the second it got of the runway (14), banking sharply right and disappearing over Horsforth Golf Club. I have never seen anything like it and I doubt I ever will again.

I am also fairly sure that the Air Atlanta 747's were for a Leeds United charter to Spain, and I think the Air Hong Kong was another 'Captain Mike Webster' special - the same pilot that brought in the first BA 747 on 4th November 1984 (Spirit of Yorkshire), the BA 747 in new colours, which was doing marketing shots all day one Saturday, and the UAE 707 and 747.

I may be wrong about the last few, but I am sure I am not wrong about the Virgin as I was there watching it on the evening it came in.

Blimey, how did you remember Stuart Owen? We used to call him the fat controller (From the children's programme Thomas the tank engine) lovely bloke if you knew him well enough.

UAE aircraft = This was Boeing 747SP-31, A6-SMR of United Arab Emirates (Dubai Air Wing) that visited LBA. It use to bring Aga Khan, for his visits to York Ebor Races. This aircraft was also the last visit of a Boeing 747 into LBA back in the mid 2000's

Air Hong Kong 747 = Correct it came into LBA on a Training sortie from London Heathrow. I don’t think it actually landed. It did 2 or 3 circuits though as I was at school that Lunchtime I remember watching it flying over the top inbound for 2 mile final onto runway 32.

Air Atlanta 747. Late 90s = This was operated on the Annual Lourdes Pilgrimage flight. Think it was a Boeing 747-200 Series that visited LBA that day. I remember that it was parked right in front of the terminal building.

The Pair of Boeing 747's you must be on about that were parked up at the same time must be the visit of Corsair's Boeing 747-200 and a larger Boeing 747-300 that visited LBA to take Leeds utd fans travelling to Barcelona for the European Footie.

I still have a recording of a documentary programme about LBA, filmed at the time that the airport was fighting to get 24 hour operations - a fight I was personally involved in at that time. It included lengthy interviews with the then Director, Gordon Dennison, the boss of Britannnia Airways (who said they were committed to LBA!!), Adrian Thompson, boss of Capital Airways, and Jim French, who at the time was boss of Air UK (now he is at Flybe).

I would imagine it was done around the late 80's, the first time 24 hours were being sought, because Capital had gone bust by the time 24 hour operations were granted at the second time of asking. Pity that - I would have loved to see how Capital developed as an airline had their parent company (Brown Group) not gone under and taken Capital down with them.
