I forgot the Jat 707's! Def remember seeing the 720 (pre extension as mentioned) and the TMA
freighter.

You have no idea how nostalgic and emotional it made me listening to those fabulous engine notes, especially the Rolls Royce Darts on the F27. The Viscounts sounded even better! A good way to get a 'fix' of 707 engine sounds, up close, is the final part of the film Bullitt, where Bullitt chases the bad guy across the airfield, up close and personal to 3 or 4 707s taxiing and rolling for take off. The sound is immense. I used to spend hours at the end of LHR's runway just watching them taxi on to the end and then take off - it's a wonder I am not deaf. Thanks for posting Aviador.

The Tupolev Tu154 was another one with a unique sound.

I think most movements back in the 80s and 90s were so unique you could tell what flight you could hear even if you weren't close to the airport. I can recall hearing Balkan Airlines Tu154 taxiing from the bottom of Yeadon nearly 2 miles away from the airport.

Mind you for noise the VC10 took some beating..They used to call it the `Conway Crescendo`..I`m sure one or two RAF `10`s`did visit LBA back in the day doing troop movements for Catterick.,Talking of 1-11`s back in the late 80`s we went to Minorca on a Dan Air from Manchester and had the seats on the back row..If it was noisy outside on take off it wasnt much different inside, I can tell you..

The Boeing 727 was another of my personal favourites a great aircraft to fly in and like the 1-11 had the rear inbuilt steps which was a real novelty..Ah the memories

The MEA and UAE Government 707`s were on different days. The UAE came in to the hold for a few practice approaches, i think me and my dad were at the airport for a hapag lloyd 727 so was a nice bonus. The MEA 707 was on a warm Saturday evening, it think it had been chartered by JAT or Adria? I remember it taxiing out behind a BM DC9 and Aviogenex 737-200 (what an evening!). I may be wrong as i was 9 at the time.

We had several MEA 707s at LBA, not just the one. One was used throughout a summer covering for various tech aircraft with various charter operators as I recall. I only managed to see one on the ground when I had my camera but saw several landing whilst playing golf at Horsforth. We also had several Airtours DC10's too covering for the usual MD83 (at that time). I did get a photo of the UAE 707 though, which I believe was being flown by Cpt Mike Webster (who brought the first BA 747 to LBA and the 747 that did the publicity flights for the new Landor livery). Sadly I only got my photo from Kirkstall though whilst on my way to the airport. By the time I got there, I was too late!

The 707 is a very handsome aeroplane, as is the 727. I'm happy to say my first ever flight was on a JAT 727, YU-AKG and then YU-AKK (Air Afrique livery) a fortnight later. I wouldn't mind betting there are lots of newer-generation pilots, raised on modern Airbuses and NG Boeings, who would love to do a few circuits and bumps on a classic Boeing (or McD).

It is hard to believe that, like me, the 707 dates from 1954, just 9 years after WW2. When you consider that the basic fuselage design of the 707 remains in use today on the 737 (and was used previously on both the 727 and early 737 variants), it is remarkable how good that design was and how futuristic considering it was designed in the very early 50's. Look at how cars have changed since then - massively. Yet in terms of basic design, aircraft haven't changed that much on the outside at least.

I assure you that the two pictures were taken on the same date. I have logged my slide collection since I started in 1974. I have my log for that date so if you require further proof I will scan them and post. :)

Real nostalgia time now. Did anyone see the BBC Travel Show clip on the BBC News channel on Saturday morning? It was all about plane sharing from Blackbushe Airport to Le Touquet in France. The very first plane you saw in shot was none other than Cessna CE150 G-BFIY, out old LBA resident for donkey’s years. I wondered what had happened to it!!

G-BFIY was acquired by Yorkshire Light Aircraft in 1984, from Austria having been stored in scotland for some time prior to that following an accident in 1979 when it was offically written off. Following some TLC from YLA it finally joined the Aero Club fleet, where it was operated until 2000.

image.jpeg Who remembers the Scottish Flyer?

The Winter 1969/1970 timetable for the multi sector schedule shows two weekday northbound and two weekday southbound flights (sorry about the water damage to the image). One of the original aircraft on the route was HS748 G-ATEJ before an upgrade to Vickers Viscounts. The short turnarounds were accomplished by keeping the two starboard engines running and any baggage being stowed at the front of the passenger cabin! Barnsley Holidays and a schoolfriend had their first ever flight in September 1969 in Viscount 800 G-AVIW LBA-EMA-LBA. Note the old IATA three letter codes for East Midlands and Stansted.

Before my time as well. Viscount G-AVIW went on to fly with Alidair. Somewhere on the web, there is a picture of her parked in front of the LBA terminal circa 1973.

I remember the Channel Airways Scottish Flyer very well (although I wish I didn't given it is so long ago!!). I certainly remember their Viscounts, and the livery which was black and gold on a white fuselage. Sadly, the whole concept didn't last very long at all. Hardly surprising really - how many folk flying from Southend to Aberdeen would fancy 9 landings and take-offs along the way?

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
