Just spent what seems like an eternity looking at all those old pics of aircraft at LBA! Well done White Heather and Aviador for taking the time to scan and post them. :hatsoff:

Don't thank me, White Heather is responsible for that. She's done a super job! :s_yes

PS. One of your pictures is entered into the Aviation Photography Competition here ;)

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I noticed earlier my Ryanair pic was shortlisted - don't think I was currying votes by making the previous comment tho

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Thanks for the positive comments guys - makes it worthwhile giving myself a repetetive strain injury scanning all the photos. I will continue to post 10 a day until they are all done - still quite a few to go yet including a few less well known ones from Euro 96. Another 10 just posted today.

British Airways Express Shorts 360 by White Heather, hosted on Forums4airports.com

Shorts 360's - you either love 'them or hate 'them. Whatever you felt about them they were all over the place in the 80's and 90's. They even ended up in BA's new livery as seen on this British Airways Express example, seen here departing LBA runway 14

Great photo once again! I believe Leeds based Capital Airlines had six of the type based at LBA before the airline went bust. I hated the aircraft with a passion but like you say, they were popular, probably because they were renowned for being cheap to operate.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Ah we use to call them "flying sheds" just becasue they looked like a flying Box.

If I remember correctly the following airlines all used Shorts 360's on routes from LBA over the years: Capital Airlines, Air UK, City Flyer Express/British Airways, Loganair, Aer Lingus, Gill Airways & Manx Airlines.

They could more as well.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I flew in the British Airways Express shed a few times. When the weather was good it was ok, when it was bad, that was another matter. I once flew from Lyon to Gatwick and then the shed to Leeds in a snow storm. There were two women sitting at the front, the sterwardess asked them to move back one row to help with the balance. They were very upset saying they were not fat.
It became very rough, I was trying to eat a chicken supreme most of which ended up on my suit. A woman opposite was wailing saying she would never fly again. When they upgraded I think to the ATR42, it was much better.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

There are two other airlines LBAspotter that you have omitted from your list, which might surprise a few as one was British Midland. They also had them for a while and they were seen at LBA. The other was Jersey European who used them on the Belfast City route until they were replaced by Dash 8's - you won't be surprised to know that there is a photo on its way in the Gallery to prove it!

Before the 360 became so popular, their forerunner was common, this being the Shorts 330, which was even more strange looking with its double tail, and airlines operating those at LBA included Metropolitan (Glasgow) and Genair who operated in British Caledonian's livery. Anyone passing the Gliding Club at Pocklington might see the remains of a Genair Shorts which can occasionally be seen on the airfield, near the hangar. I am not sure if it houses a winch or is used as a storage shed, which would be most appropriate don't you think?

Concorde Lover, Manx operate all sorts, but mainly Jetstream 31's and Dorniers I believe. They don't operate Shorts - very few do these days.

LBASpotter, you are correct about Capital. They were the first operator of the 360 300, with 39 seats and had six aircraft, all with carefully selected registrations representing their parent company (Brown Group), airline name, or airports they operated to (in the case of the 360's) or the type of charter operation they flew (in the case of their two BAe146 200's). Even their first two aircraft, prior to becoming a scheduled airline followed the same pattern, with G-MOXY (Cessna Conquest), named after the MOXY heavy dump truck that Brown Group manufactured in Norway, and G-BRWN, a yukky caramel brown Grumman Gulstream 1 Turbo Prop (complete with Dart engines).

Their Shorts 360 and BAe146 fleet registrations were -G-BNDM, G-CPTL, G-OLBA, G-OLTN, G-OLGW, & G-OBHD & G-OSKI and G-OSUN respectively. The two 146's were ex Air Wisonsin machines and again, the 200 was a stretched version not much seen in the UK. Dan Air operated the 100 series. Both were used for scheduled flights during the week (Luton to Belfast and Dublin) but at weekends they operated on behalf of Intasun Holidays from LBA and MAN to the Med and on Ski flights in winter.

The annoying thing was that when the airline went out of business, they were £4m in the black, but were dragged into extinction by Brown Group who were £20m in the red. You can't help but wonder what would have happened had they continued operating, as their growth was exceptional, as were their passenger loads. A sad loss to LBA in June 1990.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

I've got a couple of old LBIA photos too but can't upload them into the gallery.

- A detailed photo in March 2003 disembarking from Ryanair 737-200 (EI-CKS). Which is interesting considering in 2008 the nosecone was taken home by an enthusiast - http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=85263

- A photo in 2004 of the ramp (taken from Multiflight) when I had a flying lesson on G-BXLY featuring a white Thomson 767-200, Airtours A320-200, 3 Jet2 737-300s in old tails and British Midland Embraer 145 in dark blue

- Multiflight's old BBJ (P4-BBJ) on finals to RWY14 in 2000's taken from the cemetery

- Bmi Regional Embraer 145 in an all-white livery about to take off from RWY14, taken from the cemetery

- Airtours 757-200 towards RWY14 end taken from the cemetery

Re: Nostalgia Thread

The shed was the scariest aircraft ever.
Once landing into LGW I almost passed out with fear...funny now looking back.

A friend of mine that was ex Capital had a funny incident during strong gales.
She ended up with salad cream all over her.

I do remember BMI operating them into LBA , I think on a Sunday.
Maybe White Heather can clarify that for me.

It was like sitting on one of those 16 seater airport shuttle buses.
I use to laugh when the crew served the flight deck through two sliding doors, similar to those people had in the 70s in their kitchens to serve food into the living room.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Yes I think they only used the British Midland sheds at weekends. They also used Fokker F27 Friendships on the LHR route at weekends too for one year. I will be posting that picture later, which I only have due to my sister being on it.

The latest batch of 10 photos has just been posted in the gallery.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

G-MOXY and G-BRWN did actually work the early schedules of Brown Air. Frankfurt was served - would be lovely to get that route back eh!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Yes they did Pete (nice to see you back on the forum by the way and lets hope for some good news from LS11 soon).

Both aircraft also operated a route to Oslo, which was turned into a commercial route so the airline could make money whilst operating to Oslo in connection with its own Moxy Dump Truck business. I am not sure of the circumstances, but G-MOXY crashed and was written off some time later.

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Another batch of photos just posted on the Nostalgia Gallery including one that Local Yokel will be particulary interested in, given his Bristol connections!

Re: Nostalgia Thread

Hi White Heather,

Can you help me. Inspired by your excellent scans I've started to do a few of my own, but I;m unsure how to post them onto Nostalgia photos - can you give me any tips.

Thanks, Bob

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
