TOM Malaga diverted to Birmingham at 23:15. Puzzling as all others landed and it was just misty. Not very foggy.

It more and likely diverted to BHX as the aircraft could be working out of BHX today Monday.. Diverts to other airports are done a lot as it saves a ferry flight. With that in mind it saves money to do this practice as no fees from BRS with the flight and no ferry flight fees. The biggest cost would be bussing pax to the diverted airport.which when all costs added up makes sense. It is good business for airlines but not so good for the pax on the flight.

Sorry, but Airlines do not divert en route flights and P*ss off 180+ passengers just because the aircraft is needed somewhere tomorrow to save a few pounds. Most Airlines position flights on a daily basis, including TUI (Winter weekend ski flights by EXT aircraft).
On occasions an airline MAY divert an en route flight to rescue another heavily delayed flight on the same day, but that's still rare.
Media can get hold of comments like this and run wild with them.

I believe it was because of a flap issue that the aircraft diverted.

Monday 19 February 2018

Early morning mist appears to have caused a few problems with some aircraft this morning - the ones not Cat3 equipped it seems.

BM 2002 due 1005 from BRU diverted to EXT and the next outbound to BRU at 1040 is shown as cancelled.
BM 1802 due 1015 from ABZ diverted to EXT, as did one of the Eastern Airbus shuttle flights from Hawarden.

EI 3280 due 0800 from DUB was cancelled as was the return at 0825.

BM also cancelled the first FRA rotation of the day BM 1821/1822, due out 0640 and back at 1030.

BM 1882 due 1005 from CDG is showing a delay until 1330.

How does diversion to Birmingham resolve a flap issue. Isnt the priority to land safely and quickly.

I believe it's because the aircraft needs a longer runway. A Ryanair had a similar problem the other month and diverted to Cardiff so in this case TUI have chosen the even longer runway at BHX.

Poor weather with a potential technical problem isn't a good combination. Conditions need to be as good as they can be. A flap problem isn't generally a "land safely and quickly" problem, it usually just means a faster landing speed, so generally more runway is required in the event that anything does go wrong, or just for better stopping distance. Flap problems don't usually appear until landing. I've seen a few TOM 757's divert into CWL from BRS because of this issue.

Long haul airlines willsurely be noting all these deficiencies before they make a decision. Not looking good.

At least one already has. Another 381 metres and the BRS runway would be the same length as CWL's. Looked at that way it doesn't seem a lot but it obviously is or they would be doing something about it.

Several bmi regional cancellations today according to BRS website arrivals/departure pages. I can't see that it would have been the result of the fire alarm evacuation early this morning. These were cancelled:

BM1825 to Franfurt at 1205 and return leg BM1826 due BRS at 1605
BM1863 to Dusseldorf at 1320 and return leg BM1864 due BRS at 1645
BM1847 to Munich at 1710 and return leg BM1848 due BRS at 2140
BM2007 to Brussels at 1730 and return leg BM2008 due BRS at 2135
BM1837 to Hamburg at 1740 and return leg BM1838 due BRS at 2125

Tomorrow's BM1801 to Aberdeen at 0700 is alredy shown as cancelled

Some bmi regional flights did operate:

BM1845 to Munich at 1210 and return leg BM1846 at 1650
BM1885 to Paris CDG at 1400 and return leg BM1886 at 1700
BM1807 from Aberdeen at 1520 and return leg BM1808 at 1550
BM1827 to Frankfurt at 1635 and return leg BM1828 at 2045

There have been major weather problems in the Canary Islands today with adverse weather (torrential rain). BRS had just three Canary rotations today, all to/from Lanzarote, viz:

Ryanair FR4755 departed BRS at 0745 but the return leg FR4756 due BRS at 1620 appears to have been cancelled. I say 'appears' because the BRS arrivals page is showing it both cancelled and with an expected arrival time of 2100

Thomas Cook TCX1702 departed BRS at 0900 and the return leg TCX1703 due BRS at 1810 landed at 2051

TUI TOM6750 departed BRS at 1330 but the return leg TOM6751 due BRS at 2235 is shown as cancelled

Looking at FR24 TOM6751 is en route to Bristol, but from Faro. It looks like the outbound diverted to FAO and is now on its way back. I'm guessing with passengers otherwise they will be stranded in Faro.

TCX1702 BRS-LPA diverted to FUE and arrived back this eve from LPA.
FR4756 BRS-LPA also diverted to FUE but has not retuned.
TOM6751 BRS-LPA diverted to FAO and then operated back to BRS.

On the sried plum this morning there is quite a few BMIR flights around europe cancelled today. I would not like to say all weather cancelations.
It makes you wonder what is going on with BMIR.

I suppose we can only guess but crew and aircraft shortage might be 2 of the problems?

Today so far only the morning BRS-ABZ-BRS has been cancelled in this part of the world. The other 14 rotations from BRS today are shown as operational.

bmi regional seems to regularly cancel flights, so much so that I never bother to mention it in this thread when it's only one or two in a day. I think I'd be reluctant to use them. It's a shame because they offer niche routes in the main from BRS that are probably not suited to the likes of easyJet and Ryanair. Furthermore, bmir provides the LH code share on the Frankfurt and Munich routes.

If bmir ceased to fly from BRS for any reason it would be fascinating to see which airline if any filled some of the gaps.

BM1856 from Gothenburg due BRS 1600 cancelled.

The outbound to GOT operated yesterday according to the airport website. I said in my previous post that I don't bother to post the odd bmir cancellation any more, but bearing in mind recent largescale cancellations across its network I'll keep an eye on things for a few days. That said, the weather might play a major part over the coming days anyway, and not just with bmir.

Addendum

BM1867 to Dusseldorf at 1725 and return leg BM1868 due BRS 2050 both cancelled. There seems to be no weather problems at present at either BRS or DUS.

Wednesday 28 February 2018

Mainly because of weather conditions in other parts of the country and abroad, the following cancellations have taken place at BRS today.

FR504/505 DUB-BRS-DUB

FR507/506 DUB-BRS-DUB
EZY6245/6246 BRS-FNC-BRS
KL1053/1054 AMS-BRS-AMS

*tomorrows 0615 BRS-AMS is cancelled as this aircraft operates this sector

If the weather forecast for tomorrow and Friday is anywhere near accurate we can expect many more cancellations on those days.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
