12 JANUARY
Super Break Takes-off from Cardiff Airport to Iceland for First Time
Super Break welcomed Cardiff holidaymakers on board its first exclusive flight break, and the first direct route from the UK to Akureyri in North Iceland today (Friday 12th January).

To celebrate, passengers on this sold-out flight that departed Cardiff Airport at 9.15am were treated to a host of activities before take-off.

In the spirit of the brand new and exclusive Arctic experiences, a flash mob choir singing Icelandic inspired songs surprised holidaymakers at the departure gate. Icelandic football-captain Aron Gunnarsson, from Akureyri who plays for Cardiff City, was also on hand to support the celebrations.

The flight is the first of 14 direct routes from the UK this winter heading to this incredible part of northern Iceland for a once-in-a-lifetime unique getaway.

The sold-out Cardiff flight will see holidaymakers be the first to experience the ‘Incredible Iceland’ including a very special 3-night short break that includes the opportunity to search for the spectacular Northern Lights.

Upon landing in Northern Iceland, holidaymakers will take part in additional firsts including visiting a volcano, embarking on a lava walk and indulging in a beer spa (extra charge applies for the beer spa.)

All Super Break trips to Akureyri also include a Lake Myvatn Adventure – Land of Fire and Ice Tour, which includes the chance to see the region’s many magical terrains, the Goddafoss Waterfall, the boiling mud pools of Namafjall and a stop at Vogafjos working farm. There is also the opportunity to visit Myvatn Nature Baths – the ‘Blue Lagoon of the North’ or take part in a Snowmobiling Experience (extra charge applies).

Hugo Kimber from Super Break said: “It is a great pleasure to provide our customers at Cardiff Airport today with a wonderful experience from check-in throughout their stay, and hope that the special activities put on at the airport today will ensure that they have a fantastic start to their trip.

“Super Break is incredibly excited to be the first to offer these brand new and exclusive flights to Akureyri in Northern Iceland, as part of our new short break charter programme. Previously unreachable from UK airports, we are delighted to be able to connect holidaymakers with this stunning part of the world and offer them a truly once in a lifetime experience.”

Spencer Birns, Commercial Director of Cardiff Airport added: “It is fantastic to be the first UK airport to offer this brand new direct route to Northern Iceland and see the first flight take off today from Cardiff Airport. The look on the passengers’ faces as they were surprised with the choir was superb and we have no doubt the trip will remain with them for a long time to come.”

Icelandic football captain and Cardiff City player, Aron Gunnarsson commented: “I’ve really enjoyed today’s activities at Cardiff Airport. Coming from Akureyri, I am a real ambassador for the country, and I am delighted that holidaymakers can now get to this incredible part of the world more easily thanks to Super Break.”

Super Break has expanded its charter programme from Cardiff airport with breaks available to destinations including Seville, Malta, Montenegro, Croatia and the Adriatic Coast, Madeira, and further ‘Incredible Iceland’ breaks in 2018/2019. There will be a further two flights to Iceland from Cardiff Airport departing 28th December 2018 and 21st January 2019.

To book the trip of a lifetime, visit the Super Break website or call 0800 042 0288.

The Enter Air flight that was due in yesterday from Akureyri but was cancelled due to the weather will arrive today at 17.00 but from Keflavik instead.
Would that be Cardiffs first flight from Keflavik?

There has never been a scheduled route to Keflavik. Whether there has been the odd ad hoc charter flight in the past is difficult to be certain - perhaps Icelandic fisherman going to Cardiff for a weekend jolly :jawdrop:. There has never been a regular charter flight season or seasons.

It'll be interesting to see in the future if Iceland becomes a more regular route at CWL whether with Superbreak (who do have 3 more packages onsale) or someone like TUI or maybe Flybe backed by TUI.

Six Nations

Are there usually more flights when Wales play France in Wales or when the game is in France? A similar question with Ireland and Scotland. With Italy I imagine that far more flights go to Italy when the matches are there than when the are in Wales.

Hands down by a margin is

Wales v France (Cardiff)

The 2nd by a margin is then usually

Wales v Ireland (Cardiff)

Third place is quite difficult to say but believe it is between

Italy v Wales (Rome) & Ireland v Wales (Dublin).

When I first started at the airport during the W16/W17 there used to be a huge airlift to Scotland also.

I remember bmibaby operating a shuttle with up to 5 flights per day during the weekend. Monarch also used to have at least one Aircraft performing two flights per day and Bmi mainline also did the same.

These days Scottish airlift is dead.

Thank you for that, mathers. Interesting. I thought I remembered the time when Scotland was a big event in terms of flights with Welsh supporters.
I think a lot of the packages that get offered now have coaches as the option for transport rather than flights.

A long flog by coach to and from Scotland, especially if the result hasn't gone well. I suppose it's still a great weekend though.

I've never done a six nations trip but my dad has and he said it was great. I know with Wales v Scotland a lot of the smaller clubs will play each other from the community side of the game and many of them have been doing it for a long time.

Treherbert RFC have for years offered a programme where a youth team will tour a Scotland team and vice versa during the fixtures.

Some of the older folk have been coming back and forth for years and it's a great occasion when the team coach pulls up half a mile away and you hear the piper playing ahead of the bus on the way up to the club.

I have found on a site called Loloflights the details of an Icelandair flight from Cardiff to Keflavik on the 26th April and a return on the 1st May.
The details are Thursday 26th April CWL-KEF 14.15-16.15 FI1565 Tuesday 1st May KEF-CWL 14.15-18.15 FI1564.

I've been told that this is an Icelandic choir. What is the other interesting charter?

The Hurtigruten cruise flight to Bergen has had a change of operator. Danish Air Transport will operate it on a MD83 OY-RUE which is currently on it's way to Cardiff from Stockholm.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
