I didn't realise Mr Steele was involved with these, hopefully he's still on good terms with those at BHX. If I remember correctly Stansted was rumoured to be an early front runner.

Their website suggests they have tenders out for 2x 757's and 1x 763 although the pictures seem to show an A330 and the article mentions either 767 or A330.

The website also states that they will be starting with '4 unique destinations' with Sylhet the first. If they're seriously planning competitive travel to the Sub Continent then I can't see a 757 being very appealing.

Turkmenistan have done just that for the last 10 years ex BHX and are still here offering competitive travel to the Sub Continent on a 757.

Point taken

It's just that the article suggests that they aim to offer flights from North America to connect in the UK with flights to the Sub Continent. I can't see a New York to Bangladesh route that stops in the UK and then requires yet another tech stop being very attractive compared to the alternatives.

London is welcome to this one!

Now now, Sir Richard Branston started from the bottom and so did the boss of Ryanair and look at them now. Im not saying this is going to be a massive success but they deserve a chance and you never know.
Fuel prices are going to fall further so this time, it could be for real.

We shall see in the coming months if this is just hot air and another "Africaaaaaada"

Purely out of interest a map of the long haul routes previously served from BHX* but now no longer available.

map

*If someone can confirm that back when we had multiple carriers to Florida MCO was served, and that back in the 80's Air India did BHX-BOM via Moscow? I can't remember but if not I'll take them off.

And when added to our current long haul network.

map

Something to aim for in the future

MCO definitely was served mostly via Bangor and the Air India full routing was BOM-DEL-ATQ-SVO-BHX. I think another city in Pakistan was served at some point with A310 might have been Quetta or Peshawar.

Also who operated Bishkek and Hamilton?

Cheers mate.

I thought of Peshawar but wasn't certain.

Bishkek was operated by Kyrgyzstan Airways back in the late 90's. It started with an A320 then changed to a TU-154 but it didn't last long.

Hamilton was operated by Fly Globespan from several UK airports, I think they only lasted a season or possibly two.

If anything, Kehoe seems to be playing down the rumours - why? He could've simply not responded at all. I passed through gate 54 on 13/11/15 and couldn't see any signs of building works at gate 54c. That was a month ago, so if anyone here can update us on this, that'd be great.

I believe there was a short-lived flight to Peshawar on the PIA A310 back in 2004. Is the demand there for another flight to Pakistan? They could certainly do one of Lahore or Karachi I'd have thought.

Ray's map of the long-haul routes that used to be served from BHX includes both Karachi and Lahore. I don't know who served them or why they were dropped. It might be a tough ask to get them back as PIA serve both from MAN, and as for Shaheen—well, I won't go there :s_no

Blue Air are making a return to MAN on the Islamabad route so they could give it a go I suppose. They will be using A321s via Istanbul on there return to the UK market. But as you say I wont go there either, LOL

Just to clarify.

It's Air Blue doing MAN-ISB/LHE, blue Air are the Romanian carrier.

Also, Air Blue are leasing an A330-200 to do the MAN route. They say it's because they would be at a huge disadvantage against Shaheen and PIA direct flights if they opted for an indirect route.

I'm hearing they may come back to BHX too once they settle back down into MAN again.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
