Reported elsewhere that Slovenian carrier Lipican Aer has applied for a x3 weekly Waterford service. Slots also applied from LTN.

Something tells me this is going to be a huge success if true!

Just done a dummy booking for November with Finnair to Helsinki and it shows flights are via Paris with Flybe

Newcastle to Helsinki via LHR with BA both ways shows £225.

Birmingham to Helsinki via CDG with Flybe and Finnair shows £619.

I'll be surprised if they get many paying those prices, especially as KLM via AMS is £226 on the same dates.

Well, well, well...

What's this I've just been reading on the Manchester Route Development forum? Expecting potential news on a US-BHX service?

Anyone got more details?

I know it's not going to set the world on fire in Pax numbers but I would love to see the likes of Uzbekistan and Mahan back at BHX (assuming their safety standards meet European standards)!

I to would love Uzbekistan Airlines to return to BHX.Mahan Airlines would also be very welcome.
I always believed that the Uzbek service was far superior to Turkmenistans at the time we unfortunately lost the service.Obviously with Air India coming on to the scene,Uzbek decided they couldn't compete.
I believe the Uzbek route map these days is far more widespread than it was all those years ago,so possibly a good time for a return.
As for Mahan,I am not sure about the safety standards thing,I do know they are operating out some Western European airports,so a return could be possible. They have been buying/leasing a lot of newer aircraft recently so who knows?
Not sure if it is on the cards though.

Interesting question asked at the Consultative Committee meeting. I think it's one that we've all wondered about.

Obviously the answer is very non committal.

Q – “Given the whole purpose of extending the runway was to attract and enable operators to fly non-stop to Far East & places like San Fransisco etc, save for the limited China flight we have seen no major successes - why is that?”

Airport Company response: “Whilst Birmingham Airport does not currently have any services that need the full length of the extended runway to reach the destination, the extension has allowed greater operational flexibility to airlines. It means carriers operating longer sectors such as to Dubai or Delhi are now able to operate to their maximum payload, meaning they can take more cargo and make the services more sustainable for the airlines. Meanwhile, with Emirates and Qatar Airways (two of the so-called Middle East Big Three) having expanded their presence at Birmingham over the last year, we have seen further connections to places such as Beijing, Singapore and Australia opening up. As more people use these services then the business case for direct flights will get stronger and stronger, which is what airlines look for when determining new markets. Long haul routes such as the Far East remain at the top of the Airport’s ‘wish-list’ and we are in ongoing discussions with potential carriers.”

Surprising they didn't big up Goa and Phuket - given all the song and dance made about a weekend BA Cityflyer E-jet these routes seem to have slipped through the net. As they are possible because of the runway extension it's puzzling there has been hardly any comment. Perhaps they are hanging back until nearer the time?

BA has been a huge vanity piece for Paul Kehoe, with mentions of the BA code on the Vueling, Qatar and AA routes when they launched (the way he went on about having a BA codeshare, you would have thought it was BA themselves launching the routes!)

Getting an actual BA tail on the ground was a huge accolade for him, so, natural he was going to big it up to the max.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
