Spicejet have said that the pricing of the 787 will have to come down a bit to make it viable for low cost long haul flying.

However,

When SpiceJet does eventually move into long-haul flying, it will target leisure destinations as well as countries where the Indian diaspora has settled in large numbers. Singh identifies Bali, Singapore and Hong Kong as viable Asian markets, along with the British cities of London and Birmingham.

Fast moving story re Monarch.

The end is nigh I fear.

How will this effect the proposed NYC route ?

I suppose the question is, is Monarch the best airline for long haul at the moment?

I mean, survival aside, would confidence be high enough to launch long haul? People are always more cautious when it comes to long haul, as it's more expensive to rebook compared to short haul should something go wrong?

Looking at the news stories now I'm thinking I jumped the gun big time in parroting the gossip re. the Monarch long haul and destinations on "the other forum" :(

A poster on there said he was speaking to a contact connected with Stewart Airport that Norwegian will announce "multiple" new routes from there within a few days. No mention of what any of the routes are likely to be, but one to keep an eye on.

Must agree. MON is on life support. If it is NOR there is not a cat in hells chance of NYC when every other European airport is using Stewart!

You're talking utter rubbish ...with the exception of the Irish, northern Irish and Scottish routes, all Norwegian flights fly to JFK!!!

SWF is probably the only way they can keep the MAX routes cost down. If Monarch do go long haul and have a tie in with Norwegian then I'd imagine they would want them to go there and provide SWF with an England route as close to London as possible.

A dark week indeed for BHX with the loss of both Monarch and United. Feeling sorry for all those effected today.

Indeed Thunder, my thoughts will always be for the fantastic loyal members of staff who worked for Monarch, some for many years but again as this is an airports forum, where does BHX go from here ?

Our worst case scenario has come true ?

I know this is probably far too early to be speculating what and if but im getting a feeling BHX management knew this was coming. The reason for silence over the last month or two, why would you celebrate something (13 million) that you know is going to fall flat on its face.

Doubt it if any of their base airports knew what the likely outcome would be. It was very very late decision to pull the plug. Not a day for in depth discussions. Quality airline gone bust and wish everyone linked with them all the best.

Yes it's a blow for BHX but I'm sure airlines like Jet2 and Thomas Cook and possibly even Easyjet Norwegian and Vueling will fill the gap left eventually. Maybe even Primera as well.

A friend of ours worked as a steward based out of Manchester.
He quit about 6 years ago to live with his partner in Nerja. He always complained of bad management and low staff morale. Good job he didn't work for Ryanair!

Sadly the phrase '... bad management and low staff morale.' afflicts many major UK businesses and services e.g. NHS/Government/... :banghead:

Jet2 are advertising extra capacity to Spain and Portugal will be added from LBA, MAN and BHX.

It took Birmingham 5/6 years to recover from the closure of BMIbaby and get some of those routes back up and running, I have a fear that this may be worse.

I am sure that the RD guys will be trying their very best.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think it's unreadable to assume that our long period of strong growth is over. I fear we may not see 13 million again for many many months, maybe much longer.

Not sure about that.I read today on news sites that the CAA were alerted to the problems at least 4 weeks ago.
I would hope if the problems were severe enough for the CAA to be made aware they would have some kind of duty to pass it on to the airports that would be most affected.

It's interesting on the concept of bad management. No doubt this is part of the Monarch picture, but the primary

But the perspective of bad management is skewed depending on whose viewpoint you are seeing it from.

A company such as Monarch which was driven by an investment house was to get as good a return on their investment by driving down costs and maximise revenue. The easy cost to remove is related to people.

Trust me I work in HR for a company doing the same. *Sigh*

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
