The BBQ season is almost upon us!

Hi guys and gals! Earlier this week Ray Finkle said he had had the first BBQ of the season which made me think of this little trick which is great especially if you like Bailey's and Marshmallows.

View media item 3878I use Rocky Mountain marshmallows because they're larger than the Haribo ones.
Basically you need to place a Marshmallow on a stick taking care not to push the stick too far and roast the edge of the marshmallow until golden brown. Place the marshmallow on a plate and let it cool. As it cools the soft middle sinks creating a cup. Add your favourite tipple and drink then eat your marshmallow. I think a cream based drink works best and you need to drink it quickly or the bottom will fall out but it's a great little party trick if you're having a BBQ this summer.

This is a video showing you in more detail what to do although she uses an electric hob, not quite as much fun as using a BBQ but the same effect.

Are barbecues the only time when most men of the family take over the cooking chores? I'm sure that some of you take your turn with the cooking all the time but it does seem to me that, as with couples in cars, the man is usually the one who operates the barbecue.

I will admit to being an unreconstructed mid 20th Century man who is content do his share with meals by eating them, leaving my far better half to do all the work in the kitchen.

We don't own a barbecue but have been guests at others, usually hosted by family members or close friends, which is where I get the impression that it's the man who presides at barbecues.

BBQ RULES

We are about to enter the summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity, as it's the only type of cooking a 'real' man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.

When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:

Routine...
(1) The woman buys the food.
(2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.
(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.

Here comes the important part:
(4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.

More routine....
(5) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
(6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.

Important again:
(7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

More routine....
(8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.

(9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.


And most important of all:
(10) Everyone PRAISES and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

(11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed 'her night off.' And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women....

That is brilliant and, I suspect, not far from the truth on most occasions.

Mrs Finkle will love the marshmallow trick (so will you Ray Finkle if you are partial to the odd tipple of Bailey's or similar) but it's more fun when there's a few of you together. We usually get them out on "those" (I mean "that") warm summer's evening after the BBQ has long since died down and the fire pit or chiminea is burning away.

I'm not a huge fan of Baileys although in the interests of science I'll give it a go 😉

I'm more of a single malt man myself, can't beat it once all the eating has been done.

I'm aiming to try 'beer can chicken' this year

Ah the single malts, I'm partial to the odd tipple too. (I can feel another thread coming on!)

The Beer Can Chicken looks amazing, I might just give that a whirl in the summer.

Chicken tikka cooked on the BBQ served with salad, mint, coriander and finger chilli yoghurt sauce. Taste's gorgeous and it's so easy to do.

We had our first BBQ of the season today and cotrarary to earlier post I made the salad and cooked the food. The kids weren't impressed with the spicy chicken wings I'd bought though. Can't please um all!

We'd planned to have one this weekend but the weather has been so unpredictable we decided against it.

Next weekend is supposed to be nice though so we'll definitely make the most of it 👍

Well we've just had the first BBQ of 2017 🙂

People think we're crazy at this time of year but it's been such a beautiful day and tonight we have crystal clear skies. Mrs Finkle and number 1 sprog were huddled around a fire watching the stars whilst I had my warmth from the charcoal.

You beat me too it. I was just giving our BBQ an inspection today thinking similar but Mrs Aviador had already arranged to go to the flicks this evening with a friend so I've postponed the official Aviador BBQ launch until a later date.

We've just returned from a short break in Filey. The weather was kind so we had the mandatory BBQ whilst we were there.

We purchased a one of the single use BBQs from Tesco's.

Now before I get shot down, I know they're not great but I thought it would do the job as we were away from the comforts of my home BBQ. I was very disappointed with the Tesco's single use BBQ, in fact far more so than usual with this type of BBQ. When we (I mean I) lit it the lighting paper above the charcoal all burnt leaving the charcoal completely untouched.

Being the type of person that NEVER gives in, I purchased another single use BBQ from a local SPAR shop at nearly twice the price and sat the Tesco's BBQ on top of the burning SPAR BBQ which worked a trick lighting up both BBQs in the end.

I do wonder how shops get away with selling these kind of BBQs that require food to be part cooked in a microwave otherwise they are left not fully cooked as the heat fades away. #BBQ #justsaying

You sound just like me, I'm never beaten either 🙂

Those disposable things are awful but if an emergency BBQ is needed then they can do the job. If anybody uses one whilst camping then you can fold back the foil, remove the mesh and place it on four tent pegs. This gets the food further away from the coals to prevent burning, as the charcoal then cools the pegs can be hammered lower to get the food closer again.

Great tip Ray, one to remember for the next emergency BBQ. I've peeled the grill back to add more charcoal in the past.

Morrison's barbecue kebabs have very unusual cooking instructions. Customers are advised to cook the items in an oven. Did they consult their legal department before designing the packaging?
They will certainly never be implicated in any blame for undercooked food!
