Hi All,

I thought I'd start a thread whereby anyone with advice for offers or deals could share their information. I was inspired by reading a post on the Cruise Critic forum where Tesco vouchers have helped a poster save a lot of money on flights.

I have been using my Clubcard vouchers to buy Avios points for at least 5 years and had numerous return flights from UK to Europe. The present offer is £37.50 in clubcard vouchers and £35 cash and that will get you a return flight from LBA (via LHR) to 43 destinations in Europe. Last time I used it was at the end of March for a trip to Milan.

Working at the airport you soon realise your suitcase isn't as safe and secure as you first thought it was when you pass through the airport. Many airport handling agents will use this technique to find your name and address if your sutcase goes missing and ends up at the wrong airport but sadly less honest people will also use this technique to open your luggage to steal your valuables.

Fortunately most UK airports have good CCTV coverage in all airside locations where you are most likely to have belongings stolen, such as the baggage handlers make-up areas where bags are loaded into cargo containers and baggage trolleys and also where baggage handling agents deal with missing luggage.

This is an eye opener but it will make you think about the way you pack your belongings in the future.


Golden rule, carry all your valuables and essentials with you in your hand luggage. Only put clothes in your checked-in luggage along with things not permitted in your carry on baggage. The next time you look to purchase a new suitcase, choose one which is hard and one you can put a half decent lock on it.

Good advice. We always carry all our valuables in hand luggage. I've read stories where people have left all sorts of valuable/personal documents in their suitcase hold luggage which have then gone missing.

When travelling together which nowadays is always the case my wife always packs a change of underwear for us both in the hand luggage as well. She never puts all her clothing in one hold suitcase and all mine in another either. She 'spreads the load' in case one of the suitcases goes missing or is delayed.

We've had delayed/damaged/missing contents on four occasions that I can remember, always on trips into the UK.

Three of these occurred travelling via Amsterdam which used to have a reputation for losing passengers' luggage - it may still for all I know. One of the occasions though was not AMS's fault. Only when our suitcases eventually arrived at our home several days late did I realise that the check-in agent at Phoenix, Arizona had affixed a BRU final destination label instead of BRS. He probably had never heard of BRS which meant our suitcases probably had a gratis visit to Belgium before coming home. All the AMS incidents were with KLM or their then partner Northwest and the all the cases turned up in the end, albeit a few days late.

On another occasion we flew back with Thomson from Fuerteventura to BRS to be greeted with an announcement in the baggage reclaim area that we should contact a staff member. When we did one of our suitcases was produced with the back ripped completely off. It was clearly accidental damage because nothing had been stolen and a pair of dirty socks were the only items missing. Another passenger told us that she had seen the suitcase with the back already ripped off being loaded onto the aircraft at Fuerteventura.

Thomson paid for a new suitcase as did easyJet on another occasion when one of our suitcases was damaged.
 
The larger airports are the worst for losing baggage, Amsterdam inparticular but Heathrow isn't renowned for being good either. The sharing the load idea is one I forgot to add, along with the keeping a change of clothing with you. Passengers who are travelling through large airports or those with multiple connections are at most risk of losing luggage or having their luggage tampered with.
 
Are you 'flying down to Rio' this summer for the Olympics? Yes, well here is a good tip for when you arrive at Carlos Jobim International Airport.

The airport is one of two in Rio, the other being Santos Dumont which is set right in the heart of the city. If your hotel is in the city centre or, more likely, close to the beaches of Ipanema or Copacabana you will be faced with a taxi fare of upwards of 100Real - on an exchange rate this works out at around £25.

If you want to save money, take the Onibus bus service from outside the arrivals hall. This goes not only to Santos Dumont but also to the beaches as well. As a regular traveller to Rio i always get off the bus at Santos Dumont and then take a short taxi ride to my hotel in the Lapa district. This works out at 15 Real from the international airport to Santos Dumont and then 15 Real from the taxi rank at Santos Dumont to the hotel - A total cost of 25Real.

And what do i do with the 75Real i have saved? That buys me a beautiful grilled sirloin steak with a black bean sauce, a bottle of Brahma beer and a caipirinha to follow -- and i still have change...

I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
