And not just legacies but Flybe. Sounds like BHX want to protect Flybe as well.

And i can understand if that is what has happened. They have stayed loyal to BHX after BA left. Even myself who would love Easyjet at BHX dont think we can support multiple services to AMS with KLM/Flybe and Easyjet. But i suppose these are the busiest markets for Easyjet.

There are still loads of cities they could serve though but i wont bore you with the list, I think we all know which cities are not served from BHX which is frustrating as hell :banghead:

Re: Easyjet

From my understanding they would want to serve cities such as AMS/CDG which are already well served by legacy airlines and BHX have told them NO, so these things are a sticking point.

But what do I know.

Yes correct, this is half the issue, the other being how much they pay (or in their case receive) per passenger !

wouldn't saying you can't serve AMS etc because we already have an airline doing it be flying in the face of competition rules.
Can't see the competition authorities allowing that or the travelling public being too chuffed about paying legacy fares because the airport chosen to stifle competition.

I dont know how these things work but they probably didnt actually say the word NO but what they offered Easyjet was as much as saying No, thats how i see it anyway.

I don't believe that airports can refuse an airline that wishes to operate a route. The airport merely provides the infrastructure and as long as the relevant permissions are in order the route can be flown.

What could happen is generous incentives being offered for unserved or underserved routes to make them more viable. The flip side is that already established routes, on which the airport may feel that extra capacity would be detrimental to yields, could carry no discounts whatsoever making them less attractive, especially for a loco.

I'm not saying that this is definitely what has happened with Easyjet, just that it is a possible scenario.

Birmingham Airport has recorded its busiest year in its 78 year history seeing almost 13 million passengers pass through its terminal in 2017.
In total, 12,983,436 passengers travelled through the airport over the course of the calendar year, over 1.3 million more people than in 2016 giving a healthy increase of 11.5% year on year.

The busiest month fell in August when almost 1.5 million passengers were recorded in a single month, giving a significant 16.2% increase when compared to the same month the year before.

Over the course of the year, there were seven months in which over a million passengers were recorded and over thirty months of consecutive record breaking growth.

David Winstanley, Chief Operating Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “Last year we celebrated the busiest 12 months in our history.

“During 2017, we saw the launch of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays and the return of British Airways and bmi regional. News of new transatlantic routes to Boston, New York and Toronto starting from May 2018 with Primera Air were announced as well as new routes, to Goa and Phuket with TUI and Marsa Alam with Thomas Cook to name a few. Emirates maintained a strong presence in the region and introduced its second daily A380 aircraft onto its established lunchtime service between Birmingham and Dubai.

“The year was indeed one of celebration but also commiseration as we sadly saw the demise of a long-established airline, Monarch. This airline carried an average of 5,000 passengers per day from Birmingham but we have seen some existing carriers and new carriers pick up almost all of this capacity already to reduce the impact on our passengers.”

Looking forward to 2018, the airport is committed to improving the customer experience and a multi-million pound development project is underway, for completion before the summer season. This includes a redevelopment of the security processing area, new flooring, lighting and shopping facilities. A new 178 guestroom Hilton Garden Inn hotel is also being built and will open in mid-summer.

December’s passenger figures saw over 788,000 passengers travel through the terminal in the final month of 2017.

Significant growth was recorded on some schedule routes including Salzburg (+275.9%), Turin (+139%), Hamburg (+82.6%), Krakow (+81.5%) and Prague (+81.1%). Charter routes which saw significant growth included Hurghada (+199.8%), Fuerteventura (+89.4%), Tenerife (+55%) and Gran Canaria (+38.8%).

December CAA airport statistics now published for Birmingham and All airports with usual analysis. No gaps on reporting which is unusual.
Passengers -7% down in December 2017 compared to last year (2016) but clear to see the immediate impact of losing the Monarch flights.
There are still some positive variances on several of the routes , so something to celebrate and not all doom and gloom

Monarch and other news has been a massive body blow, but 9.5 million to 13 mill in, what, 2 and a half or 3 years? I am sure that if we looked at any airport there are coming and goings and remember Monarch had nothing to do with BHX.

Onwards we climb. Lets get those all important missing business centre connections and, for Ray's sake, Orbloominlando!

Thanks to Ian's recent Stats, I thought I would share this which clearly shows the journey our sub-20m pax regional airports have been going through other the last 10 years....

When you compare LTN, EDI, BHX and GLA, the patterns a re quite compelling. what can be seen is as follows:

- LTN, as we know, is in a league of its own. It has found it's niche and have really embraced them ...Providing low-cost capacity for new and emerging airlines. yes EZY and RYR have a major presence at the airport, but unlike STN, this doesn't appear to have inhibited the airports ability to attract bases from the new emerging players... WIZZ, Vueling, Air Blue. What does however always shock me, is that even though the airport has a diverse destination list, it does only host 13 airlines, only half of which offer more than 5 routes....

- EDI vs BHX, I remember when I started following BHX, EDI always appeared to be the fly in the ointment and always won where BHX lost out. Actually, when you look at the trend over the last 10 years, BHX and grown just as much if not slightly more than EDI over the last 8 years. Yes EDI have a USA network BHX would kill for, but then our links to the east, even with their recent success in getting Hainan, is far superior. I thinks to 2x daily A380s certainly help!

GLA, again I always remember being envious of GLA, and with good reason. They have attracted Virgin and Thomas Cook long-haul summer bases where BHX couldn't and again their American network is great for an airport their size. That said, we often take for granted how extensive our European route network is compared to the like of GLA. Air France famously pulled out of GLA after a single season unable to make a connection with CDG work, not too dissimilar to our Icelandair and KEF link.

All in all, but whilst we love BHX and have our own fair share of issues, BHX have not done so bad....

Also some more interesting stats that you may like. Below look at how much the top 10 airports in the U.K. have grown over the last 10 years following the last pre-recession peak in aviation traffic. Some interesting figures! BHX comes a respectable 3rd place! This really goes to show that whilst some airports may have had respectable growth for a decent spell of time, they may well have dropped dramatically at the crash in 2009/10! Figures show (2008 - 2017) pax figures...

  1. Luton LTN = +56.96% (10.18m - 15.98m)
  2. Edinburgh EDI = +48.89% (9.01m - 13.41m)
  3. Birmingham BHX = +34.90% (9.63m - 12.99m)
  4. Gatwick LGW = +32.86% (34.21m - 45.45m)
  5. Bristol BRS = +31.47% (6.27m - 8.24m)
  6. Manchester MAN = +31.14% (21.22m - 27.83m)
  7. Glasgow GLA = +21.02% (8.18m - 9.90m)
  8. Heathrow LHR = +16.34% (67.05m - 78.01m)
  9. Stansted STN = +15.85% (22.36m - 25.90m)
  10. Belfast BFS = +10.91% (5.26m - 5.84m)

Fantastic work nwoody2001, thanks!

(It's a welcome return for me to be able to make this post since I have been unable to log-in since 2nd Jan for unknown reasons - if either Aviador or Ray reinstated me after my please then thanks. I've posted a general site query about being locked out so members hopefully will be able to extricate themselves when an answer comes in. I don't think it was anything I said!)

Only mentioned MAN because they are up there with the big boys !
When they are higher than a lot of capital cities that is major achievement.
People accuse me of being anti MAN but you cannot argue with the facts they have done a great job to get to 19th

Not sure why you’ve picked up on MAN being 19th? Why not mention LGW, LTN, STN, EDI etc?

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
