CAA Provisional Statistics Update

Another thing that irritates me is some airports, notably Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol are happy to make pre-announcements before the official figures are release by the CAA yet others hold the figures tight to their chest as if nobody's going to find out the information.

Well again it is likely that Manchester and Birmingham, being large airports have staff involved in estimating the statistics. Whereas smaller places such as DSA may be relying on one person who has a whole lot of other roles as well, therefore does not have the time to do anything like predicting stats.

Cardiff Airport is not that busy at the moment but on a number of occasions in recent months has given the press an idea of the previous month's figures, long before the CAA stats come out around 14/15th of each month.

I would have thought that airports know on a daily basis how many passengers pass through the terminal each day and on which flights. I know for certain that one airport in my area is aware of this information as it happens and knows at the click of a mouse that x number of passengers flew on airline A to destination B each day even down to individual loads on those services that are multi daily.

If an airport's computer program is written properly all the information required by the CAA should be available in one place.

CAA stats March 2014

CAA stats now published and show that 37,340 passengers used the airport in March, down 3.2% on March 2013. Atms were unchanged from the previous March. The late Easter this year was probably the main reason for the slight decrease in passenger numbers as it was at a number of other UK airports.

Rolling 12-month total was 692,069, up 1.6% on a year ago.

I can't help but compare these stats with a recent statement from the Airport...addressed to the business community... where not only are they are offering discounted car parking for users of the Linksair services to Belfast and the IoM, but, once again claiming that both passenger numbers and freight are growing. Freight is only about 20% of what was achieved in 2007... and a 1.6% passenger growth is hardly something to shout about...although any growth even from a low base is better than negative figures.

Having said that, I know of a few people in my part of Sheffield who would normally fly from EMA choosing DSA this time around for their hols.

We have had a couple of months which have been a little disappointing, especially considering the increase in flight numbers this summer. Anyhow today's figures show a positive sign compared with last May

Yes, indeed, a small statistical increase in passengers which, accompanied by a small ( potential) increase in freight, might be considered to be evidence of a change in fortunes.

Just checked and updated my PAX table and it is good news.
A satisfying increase for July showing the best July for 3 years.

Yes it great to see the airport climbing out of the doldrums at long last. With new routes and frequencies planned by Wizz the trend looks set to continue into 2015.

Another good month to finish off 2014.

A low baseline figure but that's 30% up on the same month last year. An excellent improvement on last year although looking back through the years it's still below figures recorded from the first January of operations.

Back to topic... a sound increase and with the few extra flights announced for this year we can anticipate further increases. Perhaps, the corner has been turned.
