It's often asked on here what capacity the current airport terminals have and I don't think we've had an exact answer. I've just been reading some of the documents for the terminal infill and some of the numbers are interesting.

The current total capacity is circa 18 mppa with 11-12 million for T1 and 6-7 million for T2. Anything above this would require a new terminal.

The new terminal infill is not expected to trigger an increase in passenger numbers, it is being added purely to improve the passenger experience. The report suggests that there are 'numerous' other developments that would need to take place to reach the quoted 18 mppa including security, stand development and immigration.

A report in 2007 suggested that the above number, along with a huge increase in the number of destinations served, would be reached some time around 2017. This would have been an increased of around 9 mppa on 2007 numbers and we've obviously fallen way short with an actual increase of just under 4 mppa, the 2008 recession was named as a key reason.

It was also noted that there is a planning restriction attached to the runway extension limiting 204,500 movements per annum. The report equates this to approx 27 mppa.

Solihull MBC intend this to go to the committee in the first week of October.
I have just seen that a new technical director has been appointed. Sadly the press release for Andy Duggans appointed only refers to 130 million investment.

So no imminent master plan otherwose I would have expected the release to mention that he will oversee the delivery of that. Can only wish.

Dont mention Brexit. Pros and cons. Hey ho.

According to the rumours it's been 'imminent' since April ;)

In all seriousness there is a hell of a lot going into this one and with so much more involved it needs to be done right, I just hope that it's worth the wait.

Apologies for straying somewhat 'off-topic'. But so has everyone else on here by the look of things! :)

As you say we are way off topic so may get a telling off.

Not from me.

This is the 'general' thread and what happens over the comings weeks and months could have quite a major influence of the future of the airport so I'd say it was more than relevant.

@EGCC_MAN as rollo said, an excellent post (y)

If nobody else creates it then I will start a Brexit thread in the morning and will transfer all relevant posts other to it.

I'll post a link to it on here when it's done.

Regional Delegation Leads Trade Mission to India from Birmingham Airport

Trade mission aims to build on vital routes from Birmingham to India

A Ministerial trade delegation has today set off for India’s capital from Birmingham Airport, aiming to strengthen the region’s historic bond and deliver economic prosperity.

Led by Ministerial Champion for the Midlands Engine, James Brokenshire MP, and West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street, the delegation is looking to develop trade links with the world’s seventh largest economy.

Connectivity between India and the Midlands is already tremendously important enabling businesses to prosper, connecting our communities and providing a gateway to our region for inbound tourists and overseas students attending our universities. 657,000 passengers having flown with Air India to multiple destinations in India since 2013. In that time, travel between Birmingham and Delhi has grown by an enormous 88% while travel to Amritsar has grown by a staggering 314%, driven by the unique relationship the Midlands has with one of the world’s most dynamic economies.

As part of the trip, the delegation will be calling for an increase to the frequency of these important flights and the launch of new services to other key cities in India.

Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street said: “The Delhi and Amritsar routes are key for both the Indian diaspora in the Midlands and for the business community. I am keen to grow these routes with the Airport and Air India, and explore connectivity between Birmingham and India’s other major hubs”

Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and Ministerial Champion for the Midlands Engine said: “The Midlands and Maharashtra are thriving tech hubs in their own right, and by bringing these two great regions together we are strengthening our technological and economic ties to the benefit of our people and businesses.

“Whether it’s manufacturing the latest car model or sharing ground-breaking research, there is a lot to be gained and I’m determined we make the most of the opportunities, particularly as prepare to leave the European Union.”

International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox MP said: “Connectivity is a key driver of global commerce and increasing the frequency of flights between the Midlands and India is crucial to growing our wider trade relationship which is now worth close to £20bn.

“My international economic department will continue to work with partners like Birmingham Airport and the West Midlands Combined Authority to enhance commercial ties and promote trade around the world.”

Jo Lloyd, Business Development Director at Birmingham Airport said: “The Midlands has a special relationship with India and we believe Birmingham Airport is uniquely placed to be a strategically important gateway into the UK from destinations across the Indian sub-continent. Strongly supported by our regional partners, we are developing the choice of flights available to passengers seeking to travel on business, for leisure and to visit family and friends.

“Birmingham Airport has seen enormous growth in the number of passengers flying to India and we anticipate that this growth will continue into the future.

“We welcome the Secretary of State and Mayor to the Airport today and look forward to helping them deliver more flights and economic prosperity for the people of our region.”

Some interesting words from our acting MD.

Simon Richards Birmingham Airport’s acting Managing Director said:

“We serve hundreds of thousands of air travellers from the Birmingham area every year....."

The last time I saw the CAA Stats it was millions

Simon explained: “Looking forward, the airport is currently developing proposals for its long-term future and has created a Master Plan to ensure the region maximises the benefits of HS2.

So it's done?

Says it all really about the current management. Last time i was in the airport was 3 weeks ago and their was an advert on display for
BM's new routes to Graz.Nuremberg and Gothenborg. Do the management actually take a walk around their airport every now and then between what appears to be futile jaunts around the world to trade shows.
And i appreciate they have to take HS2 into account but they will be so far behind when/if that is operating it may be to late by then.

Now Primeria are gone along with the proposed Transatlantic routes. I think an airline like Norwiegan or BA should take on the Transatlantic market from Birmingham flying from Birmingham to JFK, Los Angeles, Newark, Toronto and Vancouver maybe use an A320 or 777 aircraft. I think they would do well but even Air Lingus could attempt to fly Transatlantic

Welcome Darlo (y)

TBH anything would be nice at the moment starting with Westjet to YYZ to build our TATL back up to where it was.

We shall see

Anyone know what Runway The Flight Path over Darlaston for arrivals goes to and possible takeoffs after Darlaston they do a huge turn over Walsall then line up over Sutton Park. Or They fly over Darlaston over J9 and then line up

You know about flightradar24, so that's probably the easiest way for you to check which runway planes are using. Try selecting Airport filter BHX (in/out) then using the playback button set to a time just before you know a BHX plane came over you and follow its path.

Hi Darlo, you can calculate the runway number from compass direction the aircraft is arriving from. A numbering system devised to help pilots before ILS.

Just knock the last number off the direction of travel and this will give you an approximation on the runway.
If ATC call out a runway and your direction of travel is wildly different, you know you have a dodgy navigator on board.

It can also depend on the wind direction. So if you watch the weather forecast and its going to be a hot and sunny day with warm winds from the south, it would normally be Runway 15, if its a cold windy day and the weather is coming in from the north or west, its normally Runway 33.

But this isn't always 100% accurate

Jota Airways 146 on approach from Norwich. Couldn't possibly be carrying a bottom half Championship team under threat
of financial punishment from the Football League for overspending who still think they are to posh for coach travel because they won the
European Cup 35 years ago could it?

Rumour has it that Dunelm are now stockpiling bed sheets

I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
