It might be expected that the Bristol Airport departures page compilers would have at least some idea of what is operating at its airport, but the last few days suggest otherwise.

Nearly every day they show a number of TUI departures that aren't scheduled in the airline's timetable to resume operations yet. These entries are later endorsed 'cancelled' and left in the departures page. Today there are seven at the last count.

The departures page is also showing about a dozen Ryanair cancellations today (there are also 12 Ryanair departures actually happening) with some cancelled flights shown more than once at different departure times and others to destinations not normally operated from BRS:

Chania shown twice at different times , both cancelled (no Sunday flights, Wed and Sat only)
Vienna shown three times at different times, all cancelled (not due to resume until winter)
Treviso shown twice, both cancelled (not due to resume until winter)
Ibiza cancelled (no Sunday flights, Mon, Wed and Fri only)
Cologne cancelled (not due to resume until winter)
Bordeaux cancelled (not a Ryanair BRS route)
Malta, cancelled (no longer in the Ryanair BRS booking engine)
Bologna, cancelled (no longer in the Ryanair BRS booking engine)

Jet2 have also seen flights shown and then cancelled on the departures page at various times in the past week or two, with Skiathos being one today.

So why these flights appeared under today's list of departures is anyone's guess.

The problem that you report appears to be quite common. Although I use FR24 as my source of data for the Manchester movements I also find numerous BY flights that show as operating, but then have no registration and a status of unknown - when checked the flights have no actual time of departure or arrival listed. It's all very frustrating, and time consuming, when trying to produce a meaningful report as I have to delete each line individually.

What’s quite interesting though is that Ryanair had planned a Bordeaux route and had also planned increases to Ibiza( it has never operated a Sunday ibz flight ) and Bologna was intended to come back.

Why then show the flights as cancelled if the idea is to make the airport look busier than it is? It smacks more of being unprofessional to my eyes and some customers must wonder what's going on.

A casual traveller with little interest in aviation per se might look at the departures page, see a large number of flights cancelled and be wary of booking a flight him/herself in case it's cancelled. He/she won't be aware that these cancelled flights were never intended to operate in the first place.

If we can work out in advance which flights are not operating why can't the airport? A look at the respective airlines' timetables/booking engines quickly shows which flights aren't operating this summer, or are not operating yet.

In terms of the number of flights, if not load factors across the board, BRS is at nearly 50% of its pre-pandemic airline movements now - the ones that actually operate that is.

I wonder if Bologna was simply left in the airport's system. The same applies with Malta. I have a feeling that Ryanair operated a rugby flight to Bordeaux earlier this year. Bordeaux is not in the Ryanair BRS booking engine; again it might have somehow been left in the airport's system. Bordeaux is a longstanding easyJet route of course and, whilst Ryanair have come to compete on a number of easyJet's non-sun routes in recent years, I doubt that Bordeaux could stand competition even though it is one of Bristol's twin cities.

My take on this was based on the majority of people viewing airport arrivals and departures on their mobile phone - thus if they don’t choose a specific flight to see it’s current status, it would be seen to be as operating…

I can see what you mean from that perspective although BRS has never been one to show code share flights under all the various flight numbers of the partner airlines on its website departure/arrival pages as some regional airports do. KLM would be an example of that. That would suggest they are not that bothered about trying to show how busy they are. Either that or their website isn't capable of showing them. I remember some years ago on another regional airport forum someone quite innocently asked why there were five flights arriving from Amsterdam at the same time.

From a passenger's point of view it might be more efficient to show all the code share numbers because, in my example, not everyone would be looking for a KL flight number. LHR shows all the flight code numbers, sometimes not all in one block though.

In pre-pandemic days the BRS website departure and arrival pages were regularly deficient as I, and others, have commented on in F4A in the past.

I don't have a smartphone or tablet - from choice. My Internet connectivity has been via my desk tops for the past 25 years. Can you not get up the full BRS website departure page showing the latest situation re all flights on a smartphone instead of having to interrogate each individual flight to ascertain its current status?

I was out walking late this afternoon near my house which is about a mile to the north of the approach path to 27 around seven miles from the airport and it was like old times for a while with aircraft in the landing stream one after another.

I've checked FR24 and found that seven aircraft landed in a 20-minute period:

1701 Ryanair Boring 737-800 from Malaga
1704 Ryanair Boeing 737-800 from Dublin
1711 Ryanair Boeing 737-800 from Beziers
1714 easyJet Airbus A319 from Edinburgh
1716 easyJet Airbus A320NEO from Paphos

57 airliner arrivals are shown today on the airport's web page. They seem to have overcome the practice of showing numerous flights that were never intended to operate and subsequently shown as cancelled

I was out walking again today and took my 'lunch break' at Felton Common. During the hour I was there around ten arrivals turned up including a Malta Air aircraft operating what I later discovered to be the Ryanair FR8263 from Bergamo. FR24 subsequently revealed it to be Boeing 737MAX8 registration 9H-VUF.

I have no idea whether Malta Air aircraft are regular visitors at BRS on Ryanair flights this summer.

Two flights to Teesside: the regular Loganair at 1605 and an Eastern Airways flight (EZE9675) at 1500.

The Eastern flight is the Bristol City team charabanc for their EFL Championship match versus Middlesbrough on Saturday.

I passed BRS along the A38 today on the top deck of a bus - an excellent vantage point when passing the airport.

I saw parked at one of the new stands near the A38 a Sunwing Boeing 737-800 in TUI livery but with a red/orange Sunwing tail. I think the registration was G-FDZY. When I saw it in the distance I thought for a minute that it was a hybrid easyJet/TUI aircraft.

Although not a spotter I've been to and around the airport on countless occasions down the years and can never remember seeing a Sunwing aircraft operating for TUI at BRS. Of course, it might well have happened but not when I've been around.

The Sunwing can be seen in the background on this video of a Malta Air 737 MAX8 landing yesterday at BRS - about 40 seconds into the video. It can be seen again in the last minute or so of the tape when the Malta Air aircraft takes off.
