At 0715 this morning, a very loud 4 piston engine aircraft passed over Leeds city centre heading to the NE. It was mainly painted red, with some black. It didn't sound anything like a Hercules and in fact sounded much older. Anyone know what it was? I would estimate it was at around 15,000 feet.

Thanks very much User001, It was really noisy - so I thought it was great! You don't hear the older piston engines very often these days and as it was a clear sky I had a perfect view of it as it passed over Leeds.

Without wishing to be a pain in the posterior an AN12 has turboprop engines not pistons but I agree it sounded great so early in the morning droning overhead.

Well the Russian Turbo Props certainly sound more like a piston engine than say, the Viscount, F27 or later types such as the F50. In fact it sounded more like a DC6 that needed a good service!

Don't talk about the DC6, most posters will not have seen one operating from LBA.

Did anyone else see the two CV22 Osprey's just fly over Wharfedale?? Wierd looking aircraft, a blend of helicopter and fixed wing.

According to FR, CityFlyer G-LCYM is holding between Bradford and Bolton sqwarking 7700. I expect it will probably head into Manchester.

Spotted today on Flight Radar, Flight Calibration G-FCSL, OTT @ LBA around 3000 ft:

The loop appears to be centered around Pole Hill VOR/DME.

After that, it went south then west towards Anglesey...

According to FR24 just to the west of us more over Manchester as I write is the ANA B787-9 in the Star wars livery heading from LGW to LAX, that's one aircraft I didn't expect to see above Northern England!

Did anybody else see the vapour trail from a jet aircraft at high level creating a huge semicircle above LBA today? I had a quick look on FR24 but I couldn't see what it might have been.

It was an RAF E3 Sentry from Coningsby, serial ZH106, callsign NATO35 & mostly at 31000ft.

Btw if anyone's interested, there's a USAF CV22 Osprey OTT Harrogate atm at 6000ft

Thanks ever so much Simbo. It was a long shot and I honestly thought nobody would know.

Reports of a couple of Sonic Boom's over LBA this evening, a lot of friends thought a plane had crashed!

Apparently half of Cookridge were out on the streets wondering what had happened.

Don't really know much about Military but been told it was 2 Typhoons from RAF Coningsby..? On a practice flight performing QRA's (Quick Reaction Alerts).

Can confirm that CityJet Airlines (operating for Air France) British Aerospace Avro RJ85 aircraft enroute Paris Cdg to Newcastle lost comms with Air Traffic Control at 30,000ft north east of Leeds and changed direction without instructions.
2x Royal Air Force Euro Fighter Typhoon jets were QRA scrambled out of RAF Coningsby to intercpe the said aircraft and escort it into land. They were given permission to break the sound barrier hence 2 bangs you heard were sonic booms.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
