Luton Airport ‘must expand or stagnate’
Capacity at Luton Airport has to be expanded so that it does not ‘stagnate’ while demand grows, Dunstable Today reports a council leader said. Plans to double the number of passengers using the airport were announced last week, with a planning application likely to be lodged in April.
London Luton Airport Limited (LLAL), the council owned company that owns the airport, wants capacity increased from 11.5 million passengers a year now to 18 million , with the possibility of growth to 30 million in the future, using the existing single runway. The planned growth will happen within the current airport ‘footprint’, with new taxiways to the runway, a new ‘pier’ along which passengers board planes and multi-storey car parking included within the plans.
Steve Heappey, director of customer and corporate services at Luton Borough Council, said new road layout and more security gates would be created to resolve the ‘shocking’ queues currently experienced by passengers getting to and through the airport. Although the airport had been extremely successful over the past decade, there was a danger that airlines would look elsewhere to grow their flight programmes if it could not accommodate them, he said.
LLAL has insisted that it wants the airport to be a ‘good neighbour’ and that all opinions will be listened to, and as far as possible incorporated into the plans. A four-week pre-application consultation will be launched at the beginning of February.

Public exhibitions to showcase Luton Airport expansion plans
Residents will be able to see Luton Airport's expansion plans during public consultations being held locally next month. London Luton Airport Limited, which owns the freehold of the airport and is in turn is owned by Luton borough Council, has proposed to increase its capacity from 11.5 million passengers per year now to 18 million.
A public exhibition will be held at Flamstead Village Hall on Tuesday, February 14 between 14:00 and 20:00. A second exhibition will be held in Harpenden at the Public Halls on Southdown Road on Saturday, February 25 between 10:00 and 17:00.
In addition to the public events, a website has been set up for people to provide comments and feedback at www.futureluton.co.uk

The expansion of existing airports in and around London seems the logical way forward as opposed to spending multiple billions of pounds on building a new Thames Estuary airport. In an era when we are supposed to be more sustainable it makes sense to expand airports that are already there. Beyond the articles projection of 18 million passengers per year, steps are already being taken to plan ahead for an eventual 30 million passengers at Luton with a single runway operation.
The expansion of existing airports in and around London seems the logical way forward as opposed to spending multiple billions of pounds on building a new Thames Estuary airport. In an era when we are supposed to be more sustainable it makes sense to expand airports that are already there. Plans to turn Luton into a huge four-runway “England airport” are unveiled today as the latest possible solution to the crisis in aviation capacity.
The scheme’s backers claim that, of the capital’s six airports, only Luton has good enough UK-wide links to make it a nationally accessible hub.
The town is next to the M1 and on the high-speed Midlands rail line to St Pancras as well the Thameslink route to central London and the south coast.
London architects Weston Williamson said that if the multi-billion-pound plan went ahead there would also have to be a new road linking the M1 and the A1, as well as a new “Crossrail 2” with a 25-minute journey time to Euston.
The new airport would be able to serve about 150 million passengers a year, more than twice Heathrow’s current capacity. The existing terminal would become a servicing area.

I personally cannot see luton getting a new runway .. But an increase of its passenger terminal is paramount for expansion.. and facilities that go with it ie better travel to get there makeing it easier to park and a increase of the size of the car parks.
Luton will soon meet head on against southend airport for IT traffic.
Which is expanding . they are icreaseing the size of the runway and the passenger facilities have been increased . also a new railway station been built and larger bus station

Preparation work is underway for the new people mover, it will include a new bridge which has been designed so that its outline represents the flight path of an aircraft climbing off a runway.

Drones certainly have positive merit when used responsibly. The DART link looks impressive and the video will be an excellent record of how it was all put together.

Another picture by LTNman showing the newly finished people mover bridge waiting to be transported.
In his comments on this picture LTNman rexported that the top of the "swoop" is the same height as the approach lights and will be very near to them, creating a potential safety issue. Since the "swoop" is purely for decoration, this does not reflect well on the designers.
