The master plan is finally to be released this month.

Plans for a second runway have been dropped to 'avoid a significant impact of Berkswell and Balsall Common' as well as 'cutting through a planned 'garden city' by HS2'. It's been said that the current runway has plenty of capacity.

It'll be interesting to see the details.

Indeed - in Gatwick's latest master plan they're forecasting up to 61mppa on their single runway by 2033.

Many people (on here included) have commented about how much (or little) the runway extension has helped BHX. I imagine the same would end up being true for any second runway.

We can't really judge passenger number forecasts for a single runway BHX by looking at what LGW is proposing. It's practically banned anything under 120 seats by imposing levies on the smaller aircraft that BHX and all other regionals need to build up a network of routes, and I imagine over time the levies will be for anything under 150 seats. Throw in it being "London" and the skewed advertising campaigns by national bodies that for the most part ignore anything that's not within the confines of the M25 means getting tourism spend away from London becomes a difficult job. May be the likes of Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester properly join forces in marketing "the Real England" for both investment opportunities and tourism.

I wasn't exactly comparing BHX to LGW, and I wasn't suggesting BHX should be attempting to emulate LGW.

This master plan will likely be growing BHX to the 30-35mppa mark. Even with the drastically different circumstances between BHX and LGW, my point was that LGW - and many other single runway airports - suggests that this can easily be done with a single runway.

The more pressing issue for BHX than runway capacity IMO is stand capacity and the limited space for which to expand this.

Also I hate to say it, but I think its more likely that parliament would relocate from London than it is for every non-London/SE region to work together.

Covered terminal facilities for the remote stands or perhaps new terminal buildings on the Elmdon space may encourage present and future airlines to consider BHX worthy enough for expansion. How many times have we been staring at an empty runway for long periods desperately hoping for something to use it?

BHX has a long runway and arguably the space for expansion of passenger facilities. LGW has managed to expand within limited grounds with One official runway so if the master plan was adventurous enough, best use of HS2 and BHX acreage and of course some Wonga to pay for it could see BHX become the airport Birmingham and our region deserves and further justify those awards.

And even the South West, the largest English government region in area with over five million residents which falls between two stools. It's not 'north of Watford', neither is it part of the London/South East gravy train region, so it's generally ignored by everyone outside the South West.

Or black and white drawings that we can colour in.

Just hope it is ambitious and deliverable. Ambitious but unviable is not cool in the world of planning. Unambitious but delievrable is just plain boring but keeps the small c conservative planning committee happy. So big on ambitious and water tight delievrable, plus some black and white pictures to colour in.

Not BHX specifically, but could have a big effect on future thinking if HS4Air gets government interest:

The new 15 year master plan will be out today for public consultation.

It aims to invest £500m creating a larger departure lounge (which we already know about), a revamped check in area, enlarged security and a new arrivals area. I think there are also to be 11 new aircraft stands and a link to HS2.

No second runway.
