Mr Simon Calder seems to appear regularly in comment sections of aviation websites. I've suggested before that he rarely has much to say about BRS that is positive.

I was checking something about the bmi regional E-Jet that left the BRS runway in December last year and found him doing a voice to camera video in his newspaper about the incident on the day it occurred.

He said how difficult things would be for passengers with so many flights cancelled or diverted- of course, that's obvious. He also said that if you were flying to somewhere like Venice you'd have a particular problem because Bristol doesn't have many flights to that destination so you'd probably have to look at somewhere like Gatwick or Birmingham.

Well, Bristol has eleven flights each week to Venice Marco Polo - daily with easyJet and 4 x weekly with Ryanair. This winter Birmingham has.........0. Jet2 does commence a service in May though.

Looking at the December 2017 CAA stats, of the UK airports only Gatwick and Heathrow (just) carried more passengers to Venice than BRS with BRS carrying nearly twice the total of MAN. It's probably a bit of an overkill and is being reduced slightly for the summer but again shows that Mr Calder's knowledge of the aviation scene and of BRS in particular could be better - and that's being polite.

What you need to remember Simon Calder is an expert along with virtually having a season ticket to appear on the BBC every other day or so it seems.

There was a major response at BRS this morning when it was thought there was a fire on board KL1046 due to depart for AMS at 0615. Passengers were disembarked whilst personnel from the airport fire brigade and the local fire brigade checked the E190 aircraft, PH-EZI.

The airport said later that no fire had been found and the incident was caused by vapours from de-icing fluid at the back of the aircraft causing an optical illusion. Passengers later re-boarded and the aircraft departed for AMS at 0821.

These kind of events are regrettable and unfortunate of course but they do at least provide the airports emergency services with a "real" life-like situation. It can often be the case that more can be learnt from these kind of events than through mock-ups. The airport will have undoubtedly recorded detailed response times along with how the different airport departments communicated to ensure the airports emergency orders are carried through effectively.

Its rather quiet with news and things going on out of the airport.II did see cwl had a day trip today to Poland and it got me thinking. Lots of airports around the UK seem to have more day trips to where ever. BRS do get a few dap trip rotations,and some of the rotations they get operated are to places not served by LCC airlines.My train of thought was the operaters that do these day trips wont take a chance in serving airports that LCC operate into,as they can be served on a regular basis from BRS.To sum up my thoughts I think day trips to where ever with a night stop is better than a straight forward day trip.

Are TUI doing a Krakow trip from BRS ?
BRS does get Lapland and Northern light's trips.
As for companies like Superbreak and Newmarket i think it's just easier for them to use the flights available at airports like BRS rather than operate their own flights .

The Lapland flights they have been doing for years,also EasyJet does a weekly kittala flight in winter season.
The northern lights flights have been done for at least 10 years with 4 or 5 flights per year,that always a full flight.
The tui parked up today so no Krakow flight today,but that is one served by LCC
Like I said in my last post a few various flights to airports that LCCdont serve.

I think you are right about BRS being served by low-cost airlines on the routes that holiday companies select for day trips or very short season (perhaps 2-3 a season) short breaks such as Naples and Madeira. With regular flights to Naples with both easyJet and TUI in summer there might not be too much scope for a Newmarket to come up with a couple of periods in a summer for its own holidays.

At those airports that don't have such regular links these one-off or very short season breaks are likely to be more popular.

I think these trips to Krakow that occur every year from many UK airports are primarily for schools so that young people can see at first hand the results of the horrors of war, in particular The Holocaust.

Airports such as CWL and EXT that don't have regular Krakow links tend to see one-off daily charter flights. In 2017 377 passengers used the CWL rotation, 369 in 2016 and 366 in 2015 (CAA stats). With easyJet currently operating 5 x weekly rotations to Krakow and Ryanair 3 I assume that the Bristol area schools don't miss out on trips to Auschwitz and use one of the low-cost airlines.

Nope as far as i know. Guessing TUI would be the airline? Nothing in the drop down on the website yet. But would it be for Summer 2019 as winter 2018 is already on sale.

There was a post on i think WAF the other day saying that TUI were very happy with their BRS long haul ops and will probably expand it so Goa would be a good route to introduce next

I think that could be the basis of any rumour about Goa unless someone knows otherwise.

In the late 1980s BRS did have a season of Goa flights operated by Paramount Airways MD83's on behalf of Goa specialist Inspirations. Flights operated BRS - Gatwick - Rhodes - Sharjah - Goa.

Thanks to member conns757 for this information in a post in December 2016.

I'm not sure that such a Cook's Tour would be popular these days, although some enthusiasts might welcome a flip of that length on a MD83.

I have friends live in Plymouth and they were pleased when paramount started GOA from BRS. I asked how the flight was and they said very nice with all the stops. For some reason they would not fly from Gatwick,i never asked why. As soon as the flight was bookable from BRS they booked it. Their comment was we wish more long haul could be done from BRS. Their holiday in GOA at the time was one of the best they had had.
As far as I can remember the flights to GOA from BRS was good loadings each week with not many from Gatwick. It would be nice to see GOA on the boards again.
