Leeds aviation firm Multiflight adds to helicopter fleet

THE CREDIT crunch doesn't seem to have bitten Leeds-based private aviation company Multiflight.

The company has expanded its helicopter charter fleet to meet what it says is increasing demand for its charter services.

The new charter aircraft, an AS365 Dauphin with VIP configuration, joins Multiflight's existing fleet, which includes another luxury nine seat AS365 Dauphin, an AS355 Twin Squirrel, an AS350 Single Squirrel and a Bell 206 III Jetranger.

Multiflight sourced the Dauphin and completely refurbished it at its dedicated aircraft service centre at Leeds Bradford International Airport.

It has been bought by a private client and the aircraft is now being maintained and managed by Multiflight as part of its charter fleet.

"The Dauphin is a fabulous new addition to the Multiflight charter fleet and we were delighted to be able to source this helicopter for our client, give it a total refurbishment and to be selected as the maintenance and management provider for it," said Steve Borrowdale, Multiflight's managing director.

Multiflight is the only operator in the North of England that is able to offer two luxurious AS365 Dauphin helicopters.

"We have seen a significant increase in demand for Multiflight's charter service and the addition of a second superb luxury Dauphin helicopter to our fleet will help us to meet this demand," added Multiflight's helicopter operations manager, Linda Nicholls.

She added: "The ease and flexibility of helicopter travel is appealing to more and more people. For anyone wanting to make the most of their time and avoid the stress of airport queues and the ever-increasing delays on the road and rail system, private aircraft charter is becoming the way to travel."

Multiflight's charter helicopters are available for corporate rental or for days out to destinations such as York Races, Royal Ascot, Cheltenham Races, Wimbledon or Twickenham, or to a wedding or other special event.

Other services provided by Multiflight include aircraft sales and purchase; plane and helicopter charter; trial flying lessons; complete commercial pilot courses to fly as a professional; private aircraft hangarage, service and repair.

A helecopter believed to have departed from Multiflight at Leeds Bradford has crashed killing the pilot.

A pilot has been killed in a helicopter crash in North Lincolnshire.

The aircraft crashed into a field next to the M180 at Sandtoft at 1244 GMT. The man was the only person in the helicopter at the time of the accident.

Officers from Humberside Police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch went to the scene of the crash, next to the M180's junction with the A18.

The helicopter, a Robinson 22, is understood to have taken off from Leeds Bradford Airport.

Another pilot is believed to have been on board originally but got off during a stop at Sandtoft Aerodrome.

'Inexperienced pilot'

Farmer and light aircraft pilot David Cundall, 59, said he was about half a mile away when he saw the aircraft crash.

"I was gardening when I heard a loud crack and saw the helicopter come down, tail first.

"I immediately drove over and on the way got passing motorists to stop and help.

"When I got there the pilot was still strapped into his seat and the canopy of the helicopter was split open.

"It was obvious he had serious injuries and there was nothing I could do for him.

"The wreckage was mainly intact, apart from the tail. There was no burning or fire.

"I would say the pilot was aged in his 40s. Police later confirmed to me he was an inexperienced pilot."

Roads surrounding the field have been cordoned off, including Idle Bank in both directions between Low Levels Bank and High Levels Bank.

Sandtoft is 16 miles (26km) from Doncaster in South Yorkshire and 12 miles (19km) from Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire.

Humberside Police said the force would carry out a joint investigation into the crash with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.Source

This is terrible. It sounds as though the pilot who got out at Sandtoft may have been an instructor and the deceased pilot was flying solo to Humberside VFR using the M180 to get him there.

No doubt more information will be made available in due course.

Latest reports suggest that it was only the forth solo flight for the pilot. It's very tragic and no doubt everyone's thoughts here are with his family who he has sadly left behind.

A helicopter owned by Manchester United striker Michael Owen has been sold by Yeadon-based private aviation company Multi-flight to the charity Great North Air Ambulance Service.

Multiflight, based at Leeds Bradford International Airport, originally sold the charter helicopter to the former Newcastle star and maintained and operated it for him.

Steve Borrowdale, managing director, said: “The Dauphin will be an asset to the valuable service the charity provides across the North East of England, North Yorkshire and Cumbria.”

Is multiflight still a busy & viable component a leeds. I realise jet2.com use the hanger monthly but is it getting enough use as an executive terminal. I only ask because it would make a great domestic terminal & ramp 😱) Leeds Bradford Terminal 2 ... how cool that sounds... would also help reduce congestion at the current terminal.

Luton has a very successful executive terminal so there's no reason why Leeds can't.

I agree, there's no reason why LBA shouldn't have a successful executive terminal, but I got the impression that WYIA was suggesting operating scheduled flights from Multiflight which I don't think happens at Luton executive terminal.

Hi All

Here's a picture of Multiflight's new Boeing 737-300 BBJ which has just been painted up at Bournemouth Airport prior delivery to its new home base at Leeds/Bradford shortly.

Date of delivery not currently known. Will update if and when i find out.

Isn't this the second 737 Multiflight have had? I'm sure the last 737 they had was a NG and they didn't keep it for too long. I'm assuming that it is in an exec layout??

My thoughts exactly Runway 32. Multiflight had a BBJ (G-OBBJ) about 5 years ago and it was parked up on the South side occasionally by the (then new) twin hangars. I recall they sold it after a relatively short time, which was odd given they spent a fortune and waited a long time for it to be fitted out in Germany.

I am quite suprised they are tying the BBJ thing again, it was a flop last time & i am not certain the market is back yet for BBJ hire. People are still watching the spends. If it can be dual config like a QC but with the option of 137 Pax or 50 VIP that would make more sense & they would get more business.

From what I heard it most certainly wasn't a flop, they simply had an offer for the BBJ that they couldn't refuse.

In a YEP article about the aircraft I'm sure it said that the BBJ could fly to Australia with only one stop. I can't find the particular article in question.

I am not certain but I am sure that when the last BBJ was delivered, it was taken on a proving flight and returned from California USA non stop. If that is the case where do they put all the fuel in these things? Does anyone know the range of the BBJ?

I dont know the exact range, but i know they use some of the baggage hold (if not all) and convert those into massive fuel tanks. This allows such as Australia with one stopover, say in Singapore or Hong Kong for example.
