Virgin Atlantic are reducing its Manchester - Islamabad route from 4x to 2x weekly flights from May 2022. Timetable appears to be updating.

It would seem Virgin are focused on protecting their slots at LHR and it's MAN who is the loser. In fact, their web site seems to encourage MAN passengers to use their main competitor BA to fly to LHR to catch the direct VS flights from there rather than use MAN-ATL to connect onwards with DL.
This never use to be the case. I looked up MAN-LAX for example for dates in June and the first 4 options were all via the shuttle to LHR, and then it was AMS or PAR with KLM/DL or AF/DL. Same for the return flights. MAN-ATL-LAX did not appear. It does however show on the DL website and other search engines. We've flown MAN-ATL-RSW (Fort Myers, FL) previously but that came up with no flights!

A cynic might suggest that VS aren't bothered if the ATL route fails if they are trying to rely on P2P. My recollection is that traditionally that service always had a higher than normal proportion of transfer passengers at the DL hub. Hopefully, some will use other booking agencies and support the ATL connection. Incidentally, the dates I checked in June showed the flight to be an A330-200, when there was a suggestion their last 200 goes in May

With no flights to former destinations like LAX, LAS, SFO and BOS, what VS likes to call their 'home in the north' is getting a raw deal just now. Against the backcloth of the pandemic and the financial hit that Virgin took, a degree of consolidation was expected, but when Virgin announce a new route from Heathrow to Austin, one can't help at least questioning their commitment to MAN.

On the issue of Islamabad, I suspect something is going on with slot allocations as L/Fs look to have been solid. It has been reported in Pakistan that PIA is unhappy at the number of slots given to BA and VS when PK remains restricted to sub charters on its own routes to UK.

They can cry wolf all they like can PK. But their own fault. Live with it. Get me as Aviation Secretary - I wouldn't allow them to fly into the UK and put a permeant ban on them until I left office. Disgusting what happened there.

Maybe the other suggestion is - since everyone wants a holiday can they make more money with the MAN slot out to Florida etc.

Virgin are doing a one off charter flight to Cape Town this evening on a B789. ETD-20:25

seems like we will have to get used to having the current flying programme for the forseeable future as they've said that Manchester may grow again in the future.

Question will they be the different ones from what we get on MCO as they havev different layout

Yes, aeroroutes says it's 397 seats on JFK but the only A351 version on Virgin seat guru shows the more premium heavy 335 seats.

I would assume therefore MAN has the higher capacity version for both MCO and JFK

ok cheers so either we get both aircraft as normally they swap over at MCO on flight from LHR

I'm wondering about their A350 utilisation - if they keep one of the Orlando runs as an A350 and we have this 3 weekly service, would they be tempted to add another route on a 3 or 4 weekly basis so that we have 2 based A350s. Or may be there is an implied solution in that Orlando will be run as 10 or 11 weekly A350 next year rather than the A330/A350 split?

Interesting point David. Although it's nearly a year away, I did look at Virgin's web site for whats currently showing for some dates in April'24. Not yet bookable in May that I could see. ATL & JFK are the A330, and on most days with 2 MCO flights, it seems to be 1 x A330 and 1 x A350. I read somewhere that LAS is going to be Wed / Fri / Sun. However, on a Sat. - a non LAS day, there is only 1 MCO flight as well. Mon & Tues. have have 1 of each type for MCO. Thurs. is odd as the returns from MCO are both shown as A350's whereas the outbounds on that day are both A330s. Maybe there could be some swapping with London flights despite the difference in seat capacity.

Of course, a/c types and timings could change in the meantime and in June'24 when LAS starts.

The other aspect is whether flight times, turn-rounds, and slots at MAN, MCO, and LAS will enable a returning LAS flight to arrive back at MAN in time to do that day's MCO. It might have to be the later MCO departure. I noticed from the current schedules for April next year, the A350 appears to be 20-30 minutes faster than the A330 on both routes.

Anyway, as things stand, the VS operation at MAN could be achieved with 4 based a/c, 2 x A350's and 2 x A330s. assuming ATL and JFK are daily. One question though: what is the situation with BGI from MAN?

Just seen a tweet fro SPD Travels that as things stand, 3 x A351s are required on a Friday. I must have overlooked Friday assuming there would be only 1 x MCO flight as it's a LAS day. In fact there are 2 MCO showing for Fridays in April and both as A351s as stated in the tweet. Strange with only 1 showing for a Saturday. I'm sure changes can be expected.

Presumably the EDI service has to be accommodated by an aircraft doing MAN>MCO>EDI>MCO>MAN.

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
