Possible Monarch UK regional expansion in summer 2012

Monarch Travel Group tour operations director, Hugh Morgan, said today that the group was considering an increase in regional flying next year.

They are looking at basing aircraft at Bristol, East Midlands and Newcastle airports in summer 2012.

He said it would be a big investment but they couldn't use a foreign carrier as 'people don't necessarily support it', so they would have to base aircraft at the airports mentioned.

It wasn't so many years ago that regional airports of all sizes in the UK saw a myriad of foreign carriers on charter flights, so I don't quite follow the argument.

I am wondering whether the Newcastle airport catchment area can cope with many more European flights from the airport. Recent years have seen Jet2 battling it out against Easyjet at Newcastle and if anything Easyjet has had a partial withdrawal from the airport. I can't imagine all three low cost carriers surviving at Newcastle airport.
 
Or is this talking about Monarch basing an aircraft at these airports for Inclusive Tour use rather than LOCO operations?
 
I would say there is little to tell them apart these days as they all offer a 'holiday' brand alongside their low cost brands.
 
True, but I was thinking along the lines of the operation Thomas Cook have at LBA - which is an IT charter, with a limited number of seat only passengers. Isn't that what Thomson operate also from DSA having binned most (if not all) their true LOCO flights? Monarch have long been the main charter carrier for Cosmos Holidays, so the emphasis could be on charter rather than LOCO where they would be head to head in competition with established Newcastle carriers Easyjet and Jet2.
 
Air Transat has served smaller airports in the past possibly even Newcastle previously. I know LBA was served by them, possibly Exeter if anybody can confirm?

I agree. People entering the UK from mainland Spain still need to quarantine for 14 days. Given the current infection rate in Spain it would be a major surprise if the need to quarantine had been lifted by the time the Christmas Holiday period was with us.

And they don't even operate for Christmas as the first flights are from the 26th Decemebr for 1 week ? Is it lazy journalisn and the dates are incorrect ??
 
I except that the aircraft and crew are Madrid based so it could to rotate them.

You'd think or at least hope that the NCL website would have the correct information.

It's only at eight-day window and in the current situation and with an airline not well known in the area it seems a bit of a gamble.

I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
