I think so and hopefully there will be some popular connections on offer.
It will be an interesting one to watch, especially with a 3x weekly Lauda starting next month.

It will probably be one or the other and with Austrian daily that would be a better candidate as my days off from work are Thursdays and Fridays any other day and i'd have to use holiday days up. The plus with Austrian as well would be a new airline and new airports for the channel.

This is extremely good news; always thought that VIE with Eurowings was on a bit of a knifes edge (even though I read the other day about a full loads so maybe numbers are improving). If the Eurowings is closing BHX must be doing well enough for Austrian to take it over. Think the E195 is also a better fit, especially with Lauda coming onto the route. TAP and Finnair next please.

They will actually take over in January and follow the 4x weekly Eurowings schedule before going daily for S20.

Base fares of around £118 each way compared to Lauda at £40-50. A short break basic return for one adult comes in at £236, compared to Lauda at £106.

But are they targeting the point 2 point market? They may be looking more at connecting passengers to the east and as a compliment to the Lufthansa group offering at Birmingham.

Quite possibly but after a quick search on Skyscanner for flights from Birmingham to both Beijing and Shanghai they'll have a job competing with Emirates and the frequencies of AF/KLM.
Even the Star Alliance website has it way down the list below FRA, BRU, MUC, DUS and IST.
Who knows how these things work though, we all thought the route would be gone as soon as Lauda was announced.

AUSTRIAN AIRLINES LAUNCHES NEW ROUTE FROM BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT
From 1st January 2020, Austrian Airlines will become Birmingham Airport’s newest airline when it begins direct scheduled services to the Austrian capital of Vienna, and onward connections across Asia and Europe.
Austrian Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group, which forms part of the wider Star Alliance group, joining six Star Alliance airlines already operating from Birmingham Airport, including Lufthansa, Air India, Brussels Airlines, SAS, SWISS and Turkish Airlines.
The new service improves the choice of connections for passengers travelling to Asia, particularly those looking for services to Beijing and Tokyo. Closer to home, Austrian Airlines will provide greater onward connectivity to many capital cities such as Budapest, Sofia and Zagreb, plus regional connections to Graz, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt.
During the winter season, Austrian Airlines will operate a four-weekly service on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. From summer 2020, this will increase to a daily schedule. The flights will depart from Vienna at 11:05, arriving at Birmingham Airport at 12:30. Flights will then depart from Birmingham Airport at 13:15, arriving at Vienna at 16:35.
Vienna is a destination known for its Viennese charm, boasting an abundance of imperial architecture, a vast range of museums and coffee shops, and is often referred to the ‘City of Music’. The city has much to offer those travelling in both the summer and winter, with the winter markets taking place in November through to December, along with temperatures in summer months reaching highs of 27 degrees.
Tom Screen, Aviation Director at Birmingham Airport, said: “It’s great news that Austrian Airlines will become our newest carrier in January with services to Vienna, Austrian’s beautiful capital city. With services initially operating four times weekly, the carrier will grow to daily flights by the summer 2020 and we look forward to welcoming yet another Star Alliance carrier to Birmingham Airport which will provide more choice to onward destinations across Asia and Eastern Europe.”
Andreas Otto, Chief Commercial Officer at Austrian Airlines, said: "We will remain number one in Austria - in five, six or ten years' time. Austrian Airlines will coordinate the flights from the Vienna hub, while Eurowings will handle the decentralised traffic. We will connect high-demand routes such as Birmingham more closely to our hub and increase the frequency of flights.”
The Austrian Airlines service, which will replace the current point to point Eurowings flights, will be operated by an Embraer 195 aircraft with a capacity of up to 120 seats. The aircraft is equipped with 8 business class seats, and 112 economy seats.
