Excellent pics. Many thanks for those, Jerry. You obviously found your way around to the lane at the western end of the field.

Did you manage to see the city of Cardiff in the heat haze from that location? The irony is that you can see Cardiff and Newport but not Bristol which is over the hill and down in the 'valley'.

Yes it was very busy, there was even an ice cream van there. Yeah i could just make out Cardiff and Newport in the distance it was a great view. Even saw a few aircraft heading to CWL in the distance.

When I've been walking the nearby combes I've often seen aircraft heading into CWL, with the BA 747s particularly noticeable. Sometimes inbounds for CWL fly almost over the top of BRS.

My fondest memories of those movements were of the strikingly-painted (that red on the tail and rear of the fuselage) Air Wales ATR42s returning to CWL on clear summer evenings. I could see them from my garden which is about eight miles slightly to the north of east from BRS.

One thing i noticed with BRS is that the aircraft on a clear coming from countries like Italy and Germany could be seen flying past the airport to the north to line up for the runway in use which doesn't happen at CWL because they approach well to the north before lining up for the runway.

I'm not an ATCO so can only speak as a passenger and a lay observer. I believe that one of our occasional posters to this thread is an ATCO at BRS so would be able to answer definitively but, when 09 is the active runway, aircraft from the London direction typically fly over Bristol - often the northern part - before making a left turn over the Severn estuary to begin lining over the Weston-super-Mare area. In the past I've been on aircraft from the London area when they have been sent south of BRS overhead the western Mendip Hills to the Bristol Channel around Brean/Burnham-on-Sea before making a right turn to begin lining up over Weston-super-Mare.

At busy times it's not uncommon for aircraft to be sent on extended flight patterns before being slotted into the landing queue. I don't think there are recognised stacks at BRS but on occasions aircraft can be seen in the sky around the airport obviously waiting their turn to be guided into the landing queue. In fact, on Friday afternoon last our Ryanair from Dublin was one of those that could not be immediately fitted into the landing queue and we went for a little jaunt in the skies above North Somerset. Sitting in a window seat on a clear day as I was, the views were fabulous.

I just looked at FR24 and the Aurigny ATR72 from Guernsey had an interesting routing today, and from my experience when flying from the Channel Islands to BRS an unusual one. It flew overhead Southampton, Newbury, south of Swindon before overflying central Bristol to the Severn estuary and a left turn to line up for 09. Occasionally, I've noted aircraft from BRS to the Balearics use this type of routing in the opposite direction instead of flying south to the Torbay area.

The Red Arrows are displaying at the Celtic Manor in Newport and the Wales Air Show in Swansea so maybe that has something to do with it?

It might but currently a Thomas Cook from Palma, an easyJet from Faro and an easyJet from Alicante are flying up the usual path from Exmoor/Quantocks over Bridgwater Bay to turn right at Weston for 09. The Aurigny would normally have followed this routing from Exmoor/Quantocks, Bridgwater Bay itself. At least, that has been the route when I've flown it.

Slight spur of the moment thing but I'm going to do slme spotting at BRS this afternoon. Won't load up any photos till tomorrow though.

Excellent! Thank you, Jerry. It usually blows a bit there. Over 600 feet up with the coast only a few miles away.

Yep the wind was definitely biting! Some great views of the South Wales coast as well!
On a sunny and clear day the background at the western end of the airfield must be one of the most attractive of any UK airport with the North Somerset coast, the Severn estuary merging into the Bristol Channel and the South Wales coast and hinterland beyond that forming a quite spectacular backdrop.

Yep it was a pretty spectacular view!

With no mist or haze CWL can be seen and more so when dark with CWL airfield lighting on. Glad you had a good time by the look of the photyographs. You got a pic on the A320 neo It has bigger engines than the older A320s and how close the engine cowlings are to the ground.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
