Is there such a thing as an old Dreamliner yet? he is used to flying Emirates so I expect TUI is a comedown from TUI. He was never clear as to whether or not it was an aircraft specific "ricketiness" or an airline one.

I suppose they are. I've had 12 flights in A380s (all with Emirates) and I've not been consciously aware of them being that much quieter than, say, a B777. I think most modern jetliners are pretty quiet these days compared with earlier generations. I've not yet flown in a B787.So not even 5 years then. I have heard the A380s are extremely quiet.
I haven't been on a 777 for a while but the Dreamliner is pretty quiet. It's probably the only aircraft i've fallen asleep on during an overnight flight.I suppose they are. The A380 cabin is very noticeably quieter than the 777/747.
In the past seven years I've had 12 flights on Emirates B777-300ERs and 12 on Emirates A380s and I can't truthfully say I've noticed much if any difference in noise level. I've been seated ahead of the engines on every one of these flights so perhaps any noise difference is not as noticeable there.
I've never been bothered much about aircraft noise when inside the cabin so perhaps I subconsciously filter it out whatever the aircraft type, hence not noticing much difference between the 380 and 777. I'm not hard of hearing.Well I can’t explain your observations. It is clear based on my own experience and pretty much every person I speak to who has flown both notices it.
EDIT: I would add that the 777 aircraft seems to have the driest air of any large aircraft too and dehydrated you like nothing else. I do my best to avoid them and it is my least favourite long haul aircraft.
