Leeds Bradford: £100m Regeneration Programme REGEN

Agree with Aviador, this and the Duty Free feel like a step backwards. It’s not like the terminal is the size of Heathrow so need these extra shops.

I get they want to maximise revenue but blocking the view and removing seating isn’t going to help customer experience which is just as important. An unhappy passenger is less likely to return and spend money in the future.

Your not alone up there down here at BHX you used to have a great view from the main pier with seating looking across the runway (both ends)over to the old terminal and maintenance areas plus able to see most of the aprons . Then they obscured the glass so you had to stand to see out, then they removed the seats and last time I flew in April it was part completly screened off presumably for the 500th coffee shop or whatever.

10/44 windows in the new extension are now obstructed in some way by these 2 vendors, and the boarding gates take up the majority of the remaining real estate. Can't really enjoy the view without standing.

Can't help but wonder why these kiosks couldn't have gone in, at least temporarily, in the long, barren temporary space near the new Starbucks

Bit like the old days, no forward thought or planning, just stick a shop in her and there, add a cafe and we ended up with a mismatch of units stuck here, there and everywhere destroying the aesthetic look of the sparkling new terminal expansion. Plus the loss of viewing areas across the runway which children love to go and stand by the window watching planes land and takeoff. I'm sure the two units stuck by the windows was never planned to be there but the airport saw the opportunity to get more revenue from the retailers by placing them in whatever space we had.

You are incorrect. If shop units are opening, those facilities must have been planned for, included in the design and approved by the fire and building inspectors. There has been mention of a new Starbucks and WH Smiths for many months and I am certain I have referred to both in ACC reports. Update: Yes, I did in both the last two reports at least.

I find it quite amazing that whilst LBA is currently undertaking a huge project, and still growing its passengers, there is suddenly this outpouring of negativity once again on this forum, with good news being disregarded and a focus on anything perceived to be negative. More passengers demand more outlets. Fact. They complain if there aren't enough and passengers are having to queue to get refreshments. And yes, LBA need the rent from these outlets to pay the bills. Also fact.

Suggesting that these things appear with no forward thought or planning is ridiculous when the airport is currently in a continuous process of forward planning, overseen by a design team made up of numerous professionals. It's an ongoing process and the time to judge the outcome is when that process is completed.

I really am unsure why there is so much negativity. The extension is an infinitely better experience. Everyone I know who uses LBA says so.
The airport really is damned if it does and damned if it doesn't in respect of shopping/customer experience.
I might have agreed about the duty free shop taking up a fair bit of space but it was rammed when I flew out in June so there is clearly the demand.

Exactly so.

We have to remember that the footprint of this terminal was approved around 2017 and could not be enlarged without a new planning application. One side, facing North, is entirely commercial outlets, but the space available on that side doesn't allow for what is required, so its inevitable that the end wall adjoining the old terminal, and some portions of the airfield facing glazing will also have to be used for outlets of some kind. A view of the airfield and all that natural light is great, but it doesn't earn anything and it isn't a priority in the grand scheme of things. There will still be olenty of glass left for those wanting to gaze over the airport rather than over a pint.

As for rhe seating that was removed, this will be restored elsewhere, along with a lot more. It is important to remember that each stage of the work brings about changes, some of which are only temporary.

I’ll judge the revamp when it’s finished but people are allowed to question the wisdom of certain things without being shouted down for being negative. For the record, I’d say it’s about 50/50 judging by the comments on social media about the new terminal experience. Like I say, I’ve used it a few times but will reserve judgement until it’s finished.

Opinions should be respected and different views should be welcomed. Something that I don’t think is always the case on this forum in regards to LBA. I think in the future I’ll stick to other forums where balanced argument is welcomed….which maybe a more negative slant sometimes but that’s how life works. Sometimes things are good, sometimes things are bad.

Everyone just wants to see the best for the airport and sometimes difficult questions need to be asked.

Surely a balanced argument is when your comments, (or others) can be questioned , discussed, and potentially disagreed with?

You seem to want to give your views but don't want anyone to disagree ? It works both ways.

You just said you will judge when the terminal is finished, which is what I said previously. Yet this discussion has arisen because people are making judgements when the project is still 14 months from completion.

They’ve added more seating along the walkway to the new terminal which will make up for it, to be fair it makes sense, for people who are about to get on their flight they can quickly get a meal deal instead of walking all the way back to the other terminal.
This retail outlet was not on the designs that were shared publically. It takes literally 2 minutes to walk back to the larger WH Smiths and the other loations where planned retail space is. So there really was no need for it, it is just unnecessary clutter.

I’ve welcomed discussion and debate and will continue to do this and put my side across. But it seems that anything that is remotely negative is always shot down on this forum and made to feel unwelcome.

I seem to recall @KARFA calling out the same thing, maybe not in the correct way, but I see his frustrations.

As I’ve said, in the future I’ll stick to other airport forums which are more welcoming.

But that is your opinion. One you are entitled to. Clearly LBA management and the retailer disagree . The (internal) plans you refer to, are not set in stone and were obviously amended quite a long time ago. There have been various changes to the internal layout along the way, all no doubt discussed, designed, costed and given the necessary approvals. Who knows? Maybe when the project is finished they might relocate the offending retail outlet to a location which is more favourable.

I am sorry you feel that way, but it seems that anyone disagreeing is accused of shooting you down and making you feel unwelcome? I am simply asking people to wait for the finished outcome before complaining and not follow Jason Manford's lead.

If disagreeing with your comments because they are negative and are before its half finished is 'shooting you down' then the only solution is to say nothing. No debate. No difference of opinions.

Yes, similar accusations have been made and I have regularly been accused of being in bed with LBA, but I have simply stated facts not opinions, and suggested we should wait before judging.

Yes you are right, it is just my opinion but it is just as valid as the next persons point of view.

If the airport can genuinely 'make this make sense' then fair play but I honestly don't see what you and they see on this. We'll have to agree to disagree.

I haven't expressed an opinion on this. Nowhere have I said if I think its a good or a bad thing, only why its there. Nor have I said anyone's opinion isn't valid. Once again, I am asking that people wait to see what the finished project is like and then any criticisms are fair.

On a positive note when i was away in spain last week i got chatting to my ex pat neighbours over there who just happened to use LBA 4 weeks back, the last time they used the airport was well before the extension was open. They were saying to me how much the airports changed and how impressed they were with the new departure lounge and that they prefer to use LBA now over MAN (their family they were visiting live in clitheroe area)
Naturally i filled them in on what other construction is ongoing to improve the airport.
Just out of interest do we have a time scale for when the rest of the construction works will be finished?

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?
LBA: B737-300 G-GDFK empty down to Paris at 16:15 to operate the return LS268 back to Leeds 20:00 ETA where it will then operate the delayed LS265 to Malaga 20:40ETD
LBA: Albastar B737-800 EC-MUB positioning in tommorow afternoon from Gatwick 15:45 to operate a charter to Lourdes/Tarbes on Friday afternoon 14:00 AP7721 STC
I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
