Speaking of old Viscounts, as a kid, I'm pretty sure I remember seeing Alidair's G-ARBY departing R15 from the waterworks area at the R33 threshold just a few days (a week tops) before her infamous deadstick landing into a farm field near Exeter. Anyone have any old logs to confirm?
The Comet 4 was actually quite spritely with quite a high power to weight ratio for its day.
I remember once standing at the end of the domestic pier at MAN around 1980, watching a Comet 4c departing R24. It was presumably empty & positioning somewhere local (Lasham?), but it lifted off well...
I've never heard anything as loud as the Stirling Caravelle departing R15, low level from the Scotland Lane estate in May 78.
One-Elevens are loud, but this, geez........
Can't beat the good old Dart days in the late 70's for me - Viscounts, F27s, 748s and the odd Herald.
Add to that Britannia 737s and Aer Lingus 737s/1-11s.
Plus the odd specials - Aviaco DC-9s, Sterling Caravelles etc :-)
Yes - I guess it's sitting well away from the flight shed at the edge of the apron nearest R28, pointing towards the south side hanger?
Anyone got a schematic of how big and the shape of that flight shed apron?
Interesting - I don't recognise the angle if that is indeed the hanger/flight shed apron.
Is the fence in the distance the Whitehouse Lane fence? By the mid 70's this had been made quite high and solid in that it couldn't be seen through.
Which livery are you talking about here Heather - BKS, Northeast, BEA or BA?
Photos on VVN seem to show it with the usual small black 'cap' type radome that the BEA/BA 802 & 806's had when upgraded with weather radar.
'EY lasted a lot longer with their last owner, BWA, than did 'EX - so I would guess that it was 'EY that was super reliable.
'EY performed the last Viscount passenger service in the UK in 1996. 'EX was long gone by then.
Video of that flight here:
Yes, you're quite right - your post prompted me to check the other BKS Viscounts, but I think there were only the 2 scrapped here, so that's a total of 4 Viscounts altogether scrapped at LBA.
Thanks Heather - was far as I'm aware (from vickersviscount.net), there were only the 3 Viscounts scrapped at LBA:
As you say - G-ATTA, a 700 series BKS Viscount in 1971, followed around 1976 by BEA 802's G-AOHH and G-AOHK.
