Long time lurker/first time poster.
The passion for our local airport from the people on this forum is second to none.
I've been pretty quiet on social media regarding the airport, however couldn't bite my tongue any longer today and gave that pathetic excuse of an MP a tweet to pretty much call him an idiot. Please keep doing what you're doing, especially you WH, really enjoy reading the notes from the meetings!

That is the second time recently you have had a go at me, telling me I am gloating , which I am not. I am angry at the MPs. Angry at GALBA. How is that gloating? I have worked damned hard, with others, to help LBA get this approval. I am not putting my time in to benefit myself so I object strongly to you again suggesting I am gloating, just as you did after the first decision.
I have for some time been wondering if it's worth all the hassle and whether now us a good time to pack this in and you have just helped me make my decision!
My apologies for being so clumsy in my note. I was in fact trying to gain your support in calming everyone down and as I, and clearly everyone else on the Forum believes, you are looked up to for guidance and leadership.
I do take exception to the assertion I have done this before given I have unequivocally supported pretty much everything you have contributed and indeed proffered my help if required.
I clearly have upset set you quite deeply and I do genuinely regret that and your consideration to resign from the Forum as a result. Please remain and I will quietly leave the Forum myself. Thank you all for your comradeship and all the best in the future. I will follow progress with interest.

Absolutely correct, although we should support the development and renewal of all our airports as they're vital to our economy
You'd think those in the industry would support airport expansion but that's not always the case. One of the formal objections to Bristol Airport expansion came from BALPA. Remarkably they put potential extra pilot jobs at risk because they weren't satisfied with the staff car parking provision. Below is their formal objection, a matter of public record on the North Somerset unitary authority planning website.

British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA)

Objects based on a flawed employee parking strategy. Shift patterns make car sharing and public transport access unfeasible so parking demand from staff is under-estimated, yet no additional staff parking is proposed. Replacing Silver Zone staff parking with passenger block parking and relocating staff parking to the underused northside would allow more efficient use of land. Otherwise, very special circumstances do not exist. Continuing present staff parking arrangements in the Silver Zone also has safety implications for the airlines in terms of reduced accessibility for pilots and aircrew.

Unbelievable!

I was a Balpa member for years and when British Airways took over Dan-Air we saw what it was all about !
I wonder if Oprah wants to interview me on the way the firm behaves.
Its the same in all our institutions nothing changes self interest and money we are all guilty of it.

I expect the government will also have a fiscal responsibility to ensure the public purse provides value for money. Just a quick Google at the cost of a public enquiry flags the Bloody Sunday enquiry which cost £192m. The majority of that was spent on legal representation, a figure which is more than LBA plans to spend on its new terminal. Clearly, although a public enquiry is necessary in some instances, the government will have to strike a balance to protect the public purse. In this instance, what's the point of spending more money on a public enquiry especially when the likely outcome is only a delay to the airports plans.

I agree with all of that. A JR would be preferable as it can happen relatively quickly. I dont think GALBA will have trouble raising the funds, but just to be clear they need not only the £50k or so they have already raised but they also have to prove they are able to pay all LCC's costs if they (GALBA that is) lose- which is likely to be a pretty penny.

There was another post a few weeks ago, (14th Feb) which said something similar and which again quoted my post. It may have been removed.

It seems odd quoting me today and talking about gloating when the purpose of my post was to show that there is still more to do, no room for complacency, because the MP and GALBA will be doing all they can to de-rail this project. Nothing to gloat about.

The whole thing has been stressful and at home it's been a week from hell too , so my reaction may seem extreme. However, I accept it as a misunderstanding and I have absolutely no wish for you to leave this group. Please stay gcoabc1!

Nor had I any intention of doing so, although I may step back for a while and think about the future, having done 3 of these campaigns and served in the ACC for some 30 years now.

A short (I think) comment if I may. WH your long association and work on here is much appreciated and, after reflection, I hope you won't follow through with your idea to pack it in because we would seriously miss the contributions you have made and will I hope continue to make. It is too easy to write your thoughts on forums that are can be read in a way they were not intended. I think that may well be the case here. I have been guilty of doing just that on a number of occasions.

I also think that gcoabc1's post you are referring to and quoted might, in it's final paragraph have been phrased differently but in essence I doubt any comments made were being directed at you for gloating. The final paragraph was more a general note of caution to prevent the thread getting out of hand. More to the point, I think, was the general caution for all posters to maintain a quiet presence, stick to a sensible and discreet discussion rather than getting involved in a slanging match with opponents. This I also think is important on a public forum which we all know that anyone can (and do) read. That was the way I read it anyway.

So I would urge both parties mentioned to re-consider and stay as valuable Members of this forum. If I have spoken out of turn or could have put things differently please forgive me.

Thank you airforced for your input. It is truly appreciated. You caught the gist of what I was trying to say but was grammatically clumsy.
I appreciate the offer to return which I happily will do but more on the fringe initially to calm myself down and to think more fully on the appropriateness of my words, intentions and direction.

The application has been approved but still other hurdles to jump. Uncertainty is always stressful and seems to have got some on here understandably rattled. However, I suspect that it’s GALBA and their mates who are feeling the pressure right now, having fallen at the first fence. I think we need to stay calm and ensure we don’t become complacent as the animal that is GALBA could still prove extremely dangerous when cornered.

Thats the issue with just text on a screen, you dont see the human emotion behind it and can be taken out of context. Thats why i always try to add the little emotion faces in my sentences at the end. Its only natural in a forum to sometimes have heated debates, it would be a bit dull otherwise, like ive stated before the airport means so much to many on here inc myself so at times tensions may occur.

I will just leave this quote from Alex Sobel MP, from 2017, (which is on the LBA website) here. If anyone is writing to him as their MP, or to Robert Jenrick MP to counter Sobels request to call it in, then it might be worth copying this as part of that. Talk about an about turn! The quote relates to LBA exceeding 4m passengers - note his quite that he hopes it continues to grow.........!!

Alex Sobel, MP for Leeds North West, said:

“It is wonderful to see LBA doing so well. In an increasingly globalised world it is significant for us to have such a major transport hub in our local area. LBA is not just a transport hub however, but also a major contributor to the local community. The airport’s success is shared with Leeds North West in the form of economic prosperity and employment opportunities and I hope that it continues to grow and prosper for many years to come.”

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
